I wear both during long hikes and runs. Ultra 2 replaces my phone and a Garmin Fenix 6X Sapphire as my main sports and fitness tracker. I do wear the Ultra 2 every day and hardly carry my iPhone any longer. The Ultra 2 is the best smart watch made to date but Garmin is still the top of the line sports watch.
This! I’m struggling to figure out what I wear and when. I’d like to settle on one but the Garmin features are so good over the Apple Watch, but no lte 🤨
I do the same thing. Still deciding which one to wear for sleep (I think apple watch is more accurate at tracking sleep but then you miss out on accurately informing body battery and training readiness) but for runs I wear both and stream apple music from my apple watch to my airpods seamlessly as well as take calls if I need during a run, and then on my other wrist I got my workout stats including HR from a coros band. Pretty happy with my setup.
The whole purpose of the sport watch is to wear it around the clock for metrics. I’d toss the apple watch and just use the garmin and phone. Plus taking calls and text and email requires the phone
I do the same thing - aw is a great 1 inch running phone but just couldnt be without the garmin 24/7. Having a small phone i can strap to the other wrist or put in a pocket is great addition to my long runs, and allows me to stream apple music - and let the garmin track everything.
You haven't done your research enough on your Garmin. You can navigate to all kinds of places. Yes its not as user friendly as the apple watch. But it can do it.
I'm having trouble understanding this video. Exactly what is the purpose of comparing a smartwatch to a sports watch? Just because the Apple watch has some features that are similar to features of a sports watch does not make it a sports watch. And a sports watch like a Garmin or a Suunto most certainly is not a smartwatch. Look if you want to play Tetris and watch videos on your watch by an Apple watch. If you're an athlete and you want a watch to help you train and be your best buy a sports watch.
Often people use their smart watch as a running watch. So this just gives more info to help decide if you want a dedicated running watch with smart watch features or a dedicated smart watch with running features.
Exactly. Dude is obviously not an athlete. I see an Apple Watch I thing Starbucks. I see a Garmin watch I think athlete. Poor guy just doesn’t understand.
Bit harsh on the garmin here, you can get to the wallet in one button press just set your preferred button as a hotkey, I think it’s one as standard anyway. Don’t forget you have to input a passcode every time you put an Apple Watch on so not much difference there either. The garmin explore app will route you anywhere without starting an activity, not as slick as Siri but works great. I’m not a garmin fanboy I see the appeal of Apple watches and have had several but I think the negatives pointed out were exaggerated to make the garmin look worse.
There is also a navigation option on the epix and you can search for points of interest or your saved location. You don't have to use the Walk activity if you just want to navigate. It'll still record it as a workout activity.
And also there is a shortcut for paying with card. I know that Garmin does not look that intuitive to the first glance but actually it is pretty similar
Interesting video, thanks! I tried AWU2 recently but gave up after a few days with the battery life and returned it. Bought a Epix Pro 51mm - it's awesome. What watch face are you rocking on the Epix?
Whichever watch you choose, it ultimately comes down What do you value more. if it's fitness Tracking because you're a triathlete or you do a lot of back country hikes, you can't go wrong with a Garmin. If what you really want is a true smartwatch with some fitness features the Apple watch is the way to go.
I find it entertaining that everyone is upset about him comparing the AWU and the Garmin Epix. “One’s a smartwatch and one’s a sport watch! Duh!” Well…the reason he’s comparing the two is because both watches are edging into one another’s market share (more so the AWU than the Garmin). Most consumers, regardless of the health of their checkbook, want to invest in just one set of kit to meet all of their needs. I personally have both an AWU and a Garmin Tactix 7, and will be divesting myself of one of them in the near future. Still in analysis paralysis though…
Garmin Pay is as quick & easy to use as Apple Pay. You create a hot key shortcut for Garmin Pay, press and hold whichever button you choose for the shortcut and it brings up the card. If you have taken the watch off of your wrist, or it’s the first time today it will ask for the passcode. Apple Watch also need a passcode once a day or if the watch is removed so the speed of use Garmin Pay vs Apple Pay is very similar.
Have a Vivo active 4. Still get better battery life than 3 days with permanent hr on and the odd gps use. Better gps accuracy with my garmin but that stands to reason and in South Africa all banks support Garmin pay. Plus I love the security of having to put a PIN number in.
Thanks for this! I'm currently trying to choose between the two but am often leaning towards the Garmin with the better health tracking and battery. I don't actually think I desire a smartwatch where, if anything, I'm trying to minimise the use of my phone and I think all the smart features of the Apple Watch Ultra I would or at least could still easily do with my phone which is always with me. It's just being a tech geek plus the smooth and sparkly nature of anything Apple that has me thinking about the Ultra 😁 I feel like I'll buy a Epix/Epix Pro and possibly revisit the idea of an Ultra with a new version once the battery life is much improved.
I don't think Apple will ever have a watch that lasts more than a few days. Similar things with their iPhone, they have what they class as an 'acceptable battery life' and then try to maintain that whilst improving the technology around it. The Garmin is a beast as far as battery tech goes, and absolutely for fitness! It still has some smarts in there, but not anywhere near as much as the Apple Watch Ultra. I'd say try the Garmin first and then if you don't enjoy that, try the AWU
@@PeteMatheson Yeah you may very well be right there. Maybe a slight chance considering how they've chosen to market the Ultra, and how beneficial longer batter would be to those extreme activity users, but it's hard to imagine a sudden jump to say 5+ days. A shame as I still want a watch that I can keep on for the most part and not have to charge every 1-2 days. I think I'll do that though, Garmin first then if not the AWU 🙂
i’ve had the first iteration of the Apple Watch ultra for over a year now definitely my favorite apple product. I don’t do a ton of crazy adventures other than skiing and going to the gym regularly but it’s a huge help for everything in between.
yea as a day to day watch, doing the things most normal people do, the AWU is a great watch. Once you leave cell service though, it barely does anything, that's why I would choose the Garmin Epix over the AWU. The Epix acts pretty much the same even in the back country. All north american maps are preloaded.
It's like comparing apples and oranges, the Apple Watch Ultra 2 is THE best smart watch that is now a decent sports watch but a Garmin (or Suunto or Coros or Polar) are all currently way better sports watches than have some sort of Smart Watch functionality. If you can afford it, most people (like me) will have both but, if you can only afford one, it depends on what you really want it for! My Garmin Enduro 2 gets charged every 3 or 4 weeks and I run 40-50 miles a week and track at least one activity a day so it's a no brainer for me!
I have the epix 2 and bought the AWU 2 . Garmin better fitness tracker. Only had the AWU2 4 weeks so early days. Had to purchase the Athlytic app for the same feature as garmin . Will never sell my Garmin and keep as a backup but will sell AWU2 if not happy .
These products are really not aimed at the same market. Garmin is a serious fitness watch. AW is a serious (all be it apple eco system) smartwatch. Anyone that buys the other category for their needs is likely to be making the "expensive mistake". There were quite a few instances where you probably were being unfair to the Garmin though but already see other comments pointing out some of them. One thing I found funny was you forgot the screen was touchscreen for entering your passcode on garmin (and AW also needs a passcode at least once a day too btw)
@@PeteMatheson yeah i usually go for 45mm+ on smart watches but i need the bigger screen. Probs grab the 47mm if i did. Im liking the AW ultra + ultrahuman ring combo though. Small things like my bank not being able to be used on garmin is a small pain when i leave the house without phone/wallet
Really love your contents so pls keep it up. Just want to ask if Garmin will introduce a new Fenix or Epix. I am in the market for something fitness related and of course battery life. I have narrrowed my choice, but since Garmin usually releases Fenix in April or March. Appreciate your insight.
What surprise me is when you notice that the Garmin showed you lots of deep sleep while you said that you where sleeping very well because of the jet lag. It is useless to have data if they’re not reliable. I have an Watch Ultra of course.
After an intense year of engaging in endurance sports, my Apple Watch Ultra manifested a fault in its heart rate sensor, effectively rendering the device inoperative. It overheats, and the battery depletes rapidly. I brought it to an Apple authorized service center, where the issue was identified during the diagnostic process. I transitioned from a Garmin Fenix 6 Pro Solar, with which I was quite satisfied, to this toy-like watch. I am profoundly regretful of making such a decision.
For the tasks shown, definitely apple watch. Garmin is worth buying only if you run at least 3-5 hours a week or more. Or for long hikes. For strength training only apple watch, because Garmin has limited functionality.
It's shocking for me that there's even a mild debate here. I mean, a day and a half battery? Really? Like we don't have stuff to charge daily let's add something to that sum. it's and instant deal breaker for me.
Most reviews I’ve watched about garmin maps get it wrong. In the uk we use grid reference and my fenix 5 will plot a route for me. Even if I go off it will find another route
I really don't see a point of comparing apple watch with Garmin. apple watch is a smart watch obviously and Garmin is a health and fitness watch obviously. So just choose what you are focus on more or whats your priority!!!!
yea they are both great watches for what they do. AWU is a great day to day watch when you have cell service. Garmin is a great adventure watch, and fitness tracker.
Really wasn't a bad review - but I agree that you need to spend a little more time/research with the Garmin. Garmin's navigation features are far more robust than Apple's (and it's accessible offline). There is also a hotkey to link to wallet, so it's super easy to access. Both watches have wear detection, so password is needed any time you take the watch off and put back on (for wallets). I'm currently an Apple Watch user, as it's much better for productivity in business and my use case - but the Garmin Fenix/Epix line is far more capable with regard to sports/fitness/navigation. One's a sports/adventure watch and one's a smartwatch (not to mention the Garmin is $250 more than the Ultra).
Apple Ultra is millllllions of miles ahead of tech vs the antiquated garmin epix version 2 saphire!!! I have both...it isn't a contest!!! Apple wins on every level..m.
Half wrong info on garmin pay- you got the won’t have to enter the password again… you can short cut it so it’s as easy as the Apple Watch. Staking does garmin pay. I just use that as a spending money account- helped my finances in the long run
Man this comparison😂. In short, if you're an average rich Joe, then go for Apple watch ultra and if you're an elite level athelete who needs to track his every heart beat from start to end of day then go for Garmin, Sunto, Wahoo etc. Notice that I compared rich with elite because when you're an elite athelete, cost of something is no more a deciding factor, you will eventually buy the best fitness trackers in the market. But in case of smartwatches like Apple, you've variety of options from 10usd to 1000
Problem with Garmin is that it never works seamless ... and is not dramaticaly improving. I had 2 years Venu 2 and 2 other Garmins before that. Now I have Ultra 2s and XP and UX is uncomparable.
It´s not even close, have them both but only thing AW is solid at is few Smartwatch things. For tracking and training you can´t even compare them, Garmin wins by a mile.
@@NegyedMisi bro 🤦🏻..garmin is a sport watch…we r not comparing a smartwatch and a smart sport/fitness watches..as i said before, if u r a regular user who doesn’t want to carry a smartphone w u..then take the apple watch but if u r an athlete, choose garmin instead bcs u want it to track your health accurately..I’ve seen a lot of athletes and army buy garmin bsc of its durability and functionality such as built in torchlight…and of course a longer battery life
