Love the review and I agree with 99% of it (I love my Ultra!). There is one thing I don't agree with and seems to be a common misconception... the Ultra screen is NOT substantially larger than 45mm Series 8 screen. It is exactly just 3.7% larger in viewable area... 1143 sq mm vs. 1185 sq mm. The reason it seems so big is the GLASS area is much larger than the 45mm (25%+ larger!) but unfortunately a lot of that glass area are LARGE black bezels that aren't part of the display. The actual display is nearly IDENTICAL in size to the 45 mm Series 8. It is brighter and the flat front provides a cool new look I like but it seems based on the rumors we will have to wait for 2025 until the micro-led screen arrives and likely eliminates the black bezels on the Ultra... making the screen finally much larger than the 45 mm Series.
I have had the series 8 for a little over a year and I love it. I never thought I would own such an amazing device. Shortly after I bought it I had a problem with my iPhone 11 and ended up talking with my cell phone provider using my watch. I cannot tell you how strange that was to me. I am old enough to remember when, I could pick up the phone and the operator was on the line❗
I bought a used one months ago. I switch back-and-forth between it and my Garmin Epix 2. But there’s something to be said about being able to leave my phone truly behind with the use of the ultra. Being able to receive texts and phone calls without having my phone with me is a great feeling. Especially on longer runs.
Sold my Ultra after 4 months. Honestly too large for most everyday users. regularly activated the emergency alarm and bumped it on everything. working out was kind of frustrating with it and it sticks out with outfits too. Series 8 stainless steel 45mm is my go to and favorite.
The ultra is very expensive for sure; however, for what it is it could be more I think. The titanium version of the series 7 was about the same price as the ultra.
Great summary of the GBU facts! We in Australia have to spend a huge $1200Au, even though we are among the closest markets to China, where the Apple devices are made. I was used to weighty watches--so I can't say the Ultra is heavy. Before buying the Ultra, I was wearing an Omega Planet Ocean Chronometer which weighed in at 225 grams--it is also a magnificent watch, and it is still comfortable, never stops, requires no batteries or chargers.
I just got the Ultra because it was $100 off since the Ultra 2 is coming out and I really like it. It is slightly more accurate than my Garmin and easier to use. I used Garmin throughout high school and college during cross country and track and it was great. However, I do like having the extra safety feature that the Ultra has. The only downside I have with the Ultra right now is the short battery life compared to my Garmin that can go a week before needing to be charged. Other than that it’s a great watch
Ultra is ultra expensive. I spent $260 for a brand new Series 7 45mm+LTE a week ago and it's great! Coming from a Series 3, 7 is a huge upgrade for me!
Seems a bit too big. Hoping the 9 with new processor will improve battery life significantly. The other option is a slimmed down Ultra 2 with even better battery…that would be something…
A review should be balanced. I’m sure the Apple Watch Ultra is great is many things but it has so many shortcomings too. Most reviews about the AWU seems to justify its limitations rather than addressing it flaws.
I’ve used Apple Watches from day 1 and a Samsung. The Ultra is hands down the best watch I’ve ever used. I especially like the hiking app functionality. I’m a navigation geek and love the mapping when using WorkOutdoors.
Yeah, the Apple Watch Ultra is glorious. I have a couple of watch faces and I’m able to put complications for all the things that I use so I have two different faces and I don’t really need to look for the app because I could just get it on my watch face. Battery life is incredible and coming from an Apple Watch Series 3. The screen size is awesome I wonder if your AppleCare if you did purchase that would take care of the issue with the digital crown. Yeah I agree the nylon loops like the one you have that style watch is very comfortable. I currently have the Nike mignight blue sport loop and it super comfortable just like the trail band. It would be nice if there were some more colors that were actually something good I’m not a big fan of apples colors. I wish I could get more color choices. Speaking of color choices if they came out with colors on the ultra I may be tempted to sell my ultra to get a different color watch black would be cool .
I use both for runs but use the ultra after my runs as a regular smartwatch and that’s why I enjoy it can’t say the same for my Garmin watch. I just put my Garmin in a drawer after my run until the next morning when I go for a run.
In a way you could say that they're evolving in a similar way to the original cellphone. It feels like Tim Cook's modern interpretation of the apple phone.
I came from the Apple Watch seven and the ultra is much better just because of the battery and the sapphire face. The other watch was good for a lot of applications but the battery life made it, so it would always let me down just when I needed it the most and it was scratched up after a year.
If battery life is what you're after, and can do with a non-color display might I recommend the Garmin Instinct 2x. No not Apple ecosystem but great activity tracking and can supplement regular charging with included solar panels for potentially unlimited battery.
There is no way the AW Ultra has a 3 days battery. In all RU-vid tests it max out at 55-60h. In my tests, also, maximum 2 days and something. With 1-2 hours/day of GPS workout. If you turn it off by night, maybe without sleep tracking, you can get a decent 3 days (low power mode not considered).
I just got one from Amazons Renewed store for $499. Going to try it for 90 days and see if I like it. Even in 2024 it still looks like a great option vs the cellular Watch 9.
Loved me Series 2 and Series 5. But that is as a SMART watch. Not as a SPORTS watch. The Ultra is getting closer to Garmin’s level but still not there. I imagine I’ll be up for trying it around the AW Ultra 3 or 4.
Yes some do wear their watch with the display on the underside of their arm. Personally I think wearing your wrist watch on the underside of your arm is an open invitation to damaging it. I think a watch should be worn on the top or hairy side of the forearm. I recently upgraded from the SE to the Ultra and I only notice it’s size not any weight increase. The larger and brighter display is awesome plus the sounds and haptics are improved. Bigger watch gives better sound. The fitness tracking is where this Watch excels everything is brighter and sharper. Plus I’ve come to realize apple products are premium and therefore they bring a premium price.
I was going to jump on and get the AWU the moment it was announced. But I found that the size is too big for my wrist. Wish there was at least a second option in the 44-45mm 😢
I can kill my battery in less than a day. 👀 I ran 13 miles today and got back with only 45% after a few hours.. I will always have a charger if I go on a trip.
I've been wanting one, just holding off until I make some sort of accomplishment so that I feel like I deserve it more. I've been wearing my SE mk2 for a year and half now and it's been wonderful, but I've been wanting the Ultra because I love that large display and extended battery life.
I chuckled when you were praising the battery life. I used to own the Mobvoi TicWatch. That thing easily lasted 5 days without needing a charge. Yes, the Ultra’s battery life is amazing when compared to the rest of Apple Watches, but pales in comparison with the TicWatch. Especially considering the size and weight of the Ultra. Other than that. The Ultra beats the TicWatch in everything else.
My first time charging it up to 100% and it last 38 hours with 18% still to spare. So I could have waited a little longer if I wanted to. I predict that I would have gotten at least 3 -4 more hours out of it as I was at home at the time. It was 18%
I tried one and nicked the edge within 4 hours of use. Returned it for a series 8 because of the smooth edges. I kinda wish I woulda stuck it out now though and just let it get beat up
@@TjSemeniuk tell me how it’s not the watches fault? It’s literally made to use climbing mountains and shit are you serious right now? I’m a mechanic did nothing other than my normal work. I’ve used a series 8 since release not a single scratch. Use it everyday doing all kinds of work
@@TjSemeniuk not my fault it’s got a 2mm edge sticking up off it. I even bought a second one and wasn’t happy with it and returned it also still just to use my series 8. You think I’m beating the watch with a hammer or something? I put it on my wrist and used it how it should be used. Gtfo here
Honestly I use it pretty heavily and even in normal mode I get 40-60 hours without a charge. In low power mode I can’t imagine how long it would last. I normally charge it every night but it doesn’t hurt that it will last the entire day if I forget to throw it on the charger for a day
I have a 7” wrist, and the 49mm Apple Watch Ultra just feels to big and thick for me. While I’m bicycling, I’ve noticed that the watch has a tendency to slip down from my wrist towards my left hand. I find myself having to awkwardly readjust the watch while I’m riding so that it sits properly on my wrist. I never had to do this with my Series 7 in Titanium. Now that the Series 9 has just came out, I’m thinking about trading the Ultra in. In the past, I use to wear my Apple Watch quite frequently. But since I switched over to this Ultra, I find that I now only wear it when I’m exercising. I find that I’m more comfortable wearing my fancy dress watches (a 36mm Rolex Perpetual, a 41mm Rolex Submariner, a 43mm Rolex Sea Dweller, a 39.5mm Omega Planet Oean, a 42mm Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch and a 43mm Omega Planet Ocean). Hell if I’m working around the house or just slumming, then I prefer to wear my Casio G-Shock GW-5000U. Maybe I’ll do away with the Apple Watch all together or trade it in for a human size Series 9 in 41mm - it’s just a shame that Apple no longer makes a Series 8 or Series 9 in titanium. They sure know how to lose a sale (kinda reminds me of Budweiser, or maybe that brilliant social engineer that tried selling us the Edsel). : - ). Rs
I paid over $1000 USD buying the AWU in Europe (999.99 euros), I put the Rolex in a safe and wear this everyday, love everything about the watch, coming from a gen1 SE this is a major upgrade, I have one AWU band that came with the watch, I found the 3rd party bands on Amazon are a better value and quality is just fine. Looking forward to the new watch OS coming soon. 😊
I’m going to pick up an ultra with an orange alpine loop band. It’s a premium watch, but so can get it with my cellular carrier for £220 up front at £21 a month on a 36 month contract.
There no higher tech watch than the Apple Watch... BUT, it hasn't been able to replace my Garmin Fenix 7x Solar Sapphire. It's not just about that the Garmin has 26 days of battery life, it's about the stress, HRV and body battery metrics that are actually impactful to daily health. Also, last night my power went out and the Garmin flashlight is WAY more functional and useful. It's a bigger deal than you think. But the Apple watch is my daily answer the phone, schedule meetings and reminders app and the tech is way better. So, I wear both. But dude, you are still buying actual Apple watch bands? I have a portfolio of at least 50 watch bands that are 98% the same for like $3 each. Every Apple version and lots that are unique. I dare you to try a knock off alpine loop, in black... it's sick.
I’ve been using one since December. Got mine with the Alpine Loop. The battery life in the series and se is terrible compared to the ultra. I mountain bike.
I wish Apple would sell the Ultra in jet black. I feel like that colorway needs to come back. Hopefully the Apple Watch Ultra 2 will be sold in jet black like the iPhone 7 Plus
The ultra have a great look and design, the screen is the best. But I,m not impressed by the battery. I have to charge it everyday or max 36 hours. Wash your Watch band ! 😮 against stink 🤢
Apples really conservative on the battery marketing with this watch. This easily lasts me 3 full days without any low power settings. Just regular usage with everything turned up. I cant imagine how long it will last from 100% with low power mode.
Great video. $800 is VERY high and until I can get a week on battery use with heavy use I will pass. I would also use it for diving you need a subscription service to use all its functionality. That is a slap in the face.
On the Digital Crown issue, apple will fix it for no cost. All apple products have 1 year warranty and if it is not working get appointment and take it to store.
doesn’t Apple realize.. if they got this to 550-700, WITH A WEEKS WORTH OF BATTERY LIFE…they could take Garmin’s lunch. I wear a garmin that has about 14 days of battery. I only have an Apple Watch, because someone gave me one. It’s not an ultra.., because after a workout.., and a solid workday.., it may or may not die on the way home from work. roll of the dice
If you’re seeing this and considering buying using the Apple Card installments plan, know that Apple is changing installments from 24 equal payments to 12 equal payments after Aug. 15th 2023, so buy before then.
I love my Apple Watch ultra sometimes it is the only thing that keeps me on Apple because the iPhone 📱 is so boring compared to all the features you get on Samsung
I agree with everything you say 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 I got it for Xmas and n 8:34 ever take off expect to charge about ever 2 day . I bike with it take my walks and even workout and sleep through the night with it on . With the $800.00 price not everyone can afford it. But it you can . This the the best watch out there and with the variety of Watch band can be worn for any occasion. I see no need for any improvement. Thanks Apple 🍎 and thanks you everyday DAD for sharing another great video . Stay safe 👊🏽👊🏽 8: 8:34 8:34 34
the ceramic and sapphire crystal back on this watch is a brilliant choice...it does not sting sweaty skin (no surface electrical shenanigans from metals - especially dissimilar ones)
I hate how you think is should be cheaper. Does it not preform above all the other watches you mentioned? I actual hate this video 2:52 should be cheaper I guess you think that quality means that minimal price so minimal effort equal the best? Bro pro tip it don’t work like that. Simple
I think the term "Smart Watch" is being confused with "Apple Watch" here. Apple Watch battery life is terrible, most other rivals last days or weeks. There are loads of smart watches other than Apple available, creaming over the battery life seems strange, when high end Garmins like the Epix, lasts a week... most of their range lasts longer. That said, we know the Apple watches are more like tiny iPhones than other watches but you pay for that with daily charging.
A waste of money!!! Get a Bluetooth, solar G-steel G-Shock and you’ll never need a battery change or charge at all. Come on people…..::be smart about it, Apple Watch is useless
Just buy two cellular AW8s for the same price. Now no battery issues, never a second without a watch while it’s charging like having a single AWU. Plus you get two chargers, two colors, two Watch bands, etc. You’re welcome. 🔋 🪫
