I wish I would have watched this before buying my appliances

I'm one of those odd people who likes to hear a dishwasher running. The sound of the water swooshing relaxes me. ;)

As a professional appliance repair technician with decades of experience, I suggest you never, ever, ever purchase any type of Samsung Dishwasher. Worst dishwasher on earth. Period.

I agree with most of your points. However, my kitchen is next to the living room in my small home. I love my super-quiet Bosch dishwasher. It is 20 years old. Looking back at what I paid for it, it works out to 40 dollars a year -- and it still works, so every year I own it, the cost per year goes down. I'm good with 40 bucks a year.

Thank you for pointing out the black stainless steel. I canceled my home depot order just now, and replaced it with regular stainless steel.

Biggest tip, don't by something that has a "new technology " ie. Samsung waterwall dishwashers, or LG Linear drive compressors are both distsasters that they're trying to figure out still years later. If you don't get extended warranty you'll be left with a hefty repair bill. Manufacturers are overenginering and making appliances beyond gimmicky nowadays for little not no added benefit. I'm a service tech and most stuff I work on is less than 6 years old. Also, don't buy built in microwave/oven combos. Everyone regrets it when it comes time to repair and replace. Keep them separate.

I’ll take old fashioned durability and simplicity over fancy computerized crap any day. When my mother sold the homestead years back, it had a perfectly functioning 40 year old hotpoint gas stove and a 50 year old GE refrigerator (the tank!). Both were total workhorses. And yeah I’ll take avocado green fade over stainless steel too :)

Totally agree on the downdraft stovetop. We bought a house that had it. It was originally on the market for much more, we decided to buy when the price dropped. Doubtless any potential buyer will not be willing to pay as much for a kitchen with that then even a microwave mounted fan.

The one thing I insisted on in our new kitchen was the hood vent to the outside. It amazes me that the contractor tried to talk me out of it.

One huge advantage the Miele dishwasher is the fail safe leak system. Quietness is just a side note. As for a steam oven, I use it all the time. I think that we are in the waning days of gas appliances and in my next kitchen, an induction cooktop. In my kitchens it is always the trifecta of Sub Zero for refrigeration, Wolf for cooking and Miele for dishwashing and for the laundry probably Speed Queen next time around. For cooktops, always place against the wall, never on an island and have a good vent that vents to the exterior of the building and if over a certain CFM, you MUST have a make-up air system.

I didn't know Yale offered a bachelor in appliances degree. That is awesome!

Last dishwasher I purchased "was" rated above 50bd but I paid at least $250 less for it than a 44db unit. With $12 of 1 inch insulation foam from HD and an extra 30 minutes of install time for me; I brought it down to well below the original rating if not comparable to the $800-1k units. A little insulation in the cabinet and installing some between the front metal panel and the internal door panel woks wonders.

I love your kitchen layout. Usually, everything we see is a choice between "giant luxury kitchen" or "tiny kitchen built around what was easier for the builder." Very nice to see higher end appliance arranged in a smaller space. I especially love the idea of the sink in the island.

I was in the Appliance business for 40 years, as a service Tech, and i gotta say, for the most part, this is good advice. I am shocked, there is actually some honesty on RU-vid !

As an appliance salesman of 10 years, this information is actually very valid! One of the only videos of its kind I've seen that gave good advice : )

THANK YOU for your comments on downdraft vents. These are a fashion item that all the flippers are putting in their kitchen remodels these days but they don't do their job well and i worry about grease buildup (and fire hazard) in the ductwork under the floor taking the fumes out of the house.

I actually love my washer/dryer combo, no issues with lint so far. It only seems to overestimate the drying time so I just set it manually based on the load size

A couple of places I’ve worked on have drawers in the toe-space of the cabinetry, I’m a plumber gasfitter, if you can get your sink cabinetry made with real wood instead of compressed mdf, it will be stronger and straighter for longer, I installed an induction hob, but prior to the wall linings I installed a gas pipe with a male thread underfloor to allow something to connect to a pipe they may not be available for fittings in the future, the gas pipe might be useful for alternative gases we arnt using yet, if you’re in doubt, just install copper, another thing I did was fit an LED light behind the high mounted cabinets where the kettle is and toaster, it’s better than blinding yourself late at night turning on the ceiling lighting, and I recommend installing washing machines dishwashers and fridges over a channel drain or drip tray, they will leak one day. Don’t use gas ovens, they are really inadequate in manufacturing and become very degraded internally with bugs,grease and the electronics still die.

My 18 yo dishwasher quit working 2 years ago. I looked up and down the price range for a replacement. They all had pretty much 4 star reviews. So I bought the $330.00 Amana from HD. Works great. Fancy stuff has fancy troubles. Keep it simple.

Bought an old style whirlpool washer and dryer back in 2004. Both lasted until last summer (2021). Repairs just weren't working anymore. For the washer, we upgraded to speed queen and love it to death! But for the dryer, I asked my husband to just go to a used appliance place and get the cheapest, oldest, working dryer they had. We got one that was about the same age as our old dryer but had recently had several parts replaced. It works perfectly. At the end of the day, I just need the clothes to be dry, and I didn't care about fancy technology.

and that's why I stayed with the GE brand.... simple and effective.

Stay away from anything digital other than a count down timer!

I thought this was going to be weird clickbait, but these are excellent suggestions. I did not know about the black stainless finish, and the notion that a combo washer-dryer is designed to work for only 3 years… wow.

Years ago we bought a super quiet dishwasher, that also means much less spray pressure and much longer run cycles. Also much harder for the tough dishes to get clean

I bought my appliances as simply equipped as I could find. The fridge has nothing coming through the doors. The only extra was the ice maker, which I did not connect as all my friends have units that leaked. Besides, I have the recipe and make my own.

I love ❤️ your videos. We bought LG products originally for the slate type color. BIG MISTAKE. The dishwasher lasted 3 years due to water pump failure and the range hood 2 years the motor went up. Thanks to your videos l learned about quality over aesthetics. Based on your videos we bought a 800 Bosch integrated panel dishwasher and painted the panel the same color of our cabinets . I love ❤️ the dishwasher . We also bought a Fotile wall mount range hood and a hood cover that we painted the same color as our cabinets and it’s powerful and sucks most of the smoke 💨 out of the air when cooking. I would suggest anyone looking to purchase new appliances to do research and look at your videos so that they will not buy inferior products that they have to repair or replace in a few years. The dishwasher part was the best. I had a GE Profile for 18 years, it was noisy, just like the ones in the motels you sometimes get, but it cleaned great. We replaced the GE because the detergent flap broke and it started having electrical issues and my wife just wanted change not a fix. We got an LG, really quiet, the tines moved and really high end..wow.... the piece of garbage couldn't clean for its life. Terrible and the detergent bin broke before the year was up. My sarcastic joke about the machine is I could manufacture quiet dishwasher if it didn't have to clean, it's called a cardboard box. We replaced it with a much cheaper and noisy Whirlpool and it's a fantastic workhorse that cleans everything great.

I can't agree with your comment about dual fuel. It is much easier to add humidity to an electric oven (via a pan of water) than take humidity out of a gas oven. As far as the cooktop, all pots/pans work on gas. Peppers roast on gas. Popcorn pops of gas. Stir fry works on gas. Gas works in a power outage. Powerful gas burners are possible with double rings, etc. You can see the flame. Chefs use gas, etc.

I would say downdrafts don't benefit from gravity / or more accurately buoyancy. Cold air falls which pushes warmer air up. But you're right, if you were left that as on the only option I would reconsider the design. The quieter dishwasher _maybe_ if you were in a very small condo with bedroom close to the kitchen? 100% agree on the two-in-one washer dryer, those things do neither well.

I love love my Kitchenaid gas stove with electric double oven. So well designed. The two burners with “simmer” mode work better than any stove I have ever owned or used. I also like having one smaller oven. Uses less power and heats up very quickly. Great overall design!

Thanks for the black stainless tip, I was considering one of those. I got a Samsung ceramic glass oven a year or so ago by a local store's "counselor" and it's my worst nightmare. I can't cook anything properly anymore. It's either too much heat or too little and the electronic panel is already messed up. I'm just about to go to a flea market and grab a coil model out of frustration, lol.

i loved my all in one mini lg washer/condenser dryer combo. perfect in a small space, and was actually more gentle on clothes than a regular dryer even if it was slower

For scratches on black stainless take a fine point black Sharpie and very carefully fill in. Not perfect but it helps to make scratches less noticeable. I really love the look of black stainless in the kitchen and it is much easier to clean than plain stainless.

I actually use my air fryer function in my oven quite a bit, and love it. The type of pan matters a lot though.

I have waited 6 months to save up and buy a cooker hood,I saw a lovely slick black one,WONT BE BUYING THAT NOW,back to good old stainless steel you can't beat it!

We use our steam oven all the time. It’s great, because even if you just use the convection function, it heats up much faster than our larger gas oven range combo. I was really on the fence about buying it, but we really love it.

Appreciate your candour in evaluating features that sound more alluring and effective on paper than they do in actual real world applications. Technologies released before they've been fully tested and proven serve to make the consumer pay a premium to be the guinea pig.

Interesting advice. I have a Bosch washer/dryer because of space considerations and I didn’t know about the lint problem.

Wanted a Bosch knowing how quiet they are, and also wash really well, but didn't want to pay the high price. Got one at a surplus store that sells scratch and dent items, and picked up a $1,000 unit for under $500

I did black GE stainless appliances and it looks soooo good with the oil rubbed bronze cabinet pulls/knobs, faucets, and hanging light over the island. Willing to take the chance on scratches and none so far after 18 months. Second the recommendation of induction stove top! Heats faster, cools sooner, almost a zero fire hazard, and clean up is a wet soapy rag in seconds after a spills for a spotless factory new top. You can put a paper towel under a pot and boil water (try that with gas or electric). Most I do is use a mixture of baking soda, hydrogen peroxide, and dishwashing soap for any stains on induction burner that got burned on between the pot and element. You just have to get induction pots/pans and get use to the electronic sounds of the induction stove top.

Dual fuel (gas top/electric oven - often with convection) is the most common type of range here in Europe. I bought mine 22 years ago and I still love it! I'm planning on redoing my kitchen sometime in the next 5 years and I don't know if I'll go dual fuel again or induction/electric. I get the feeling that the ease of cleaning an induction cook top is what is going to sway my decision...

Steve this is a great video, so much useful information. I never would have known about the problem with black stainless steel and the potential waste of $$ with lower than 44 dbs.. A video suggestion, manufacturers and color choices. I am already thinking about a plan when one of my appliances break. Not a fan of mismatched appliances! Thank you for putting in the effort and time to making this excellent video. We are currently um-ing and ah-ing about a Miele combo-steam oven. It's $12K here in Aust, so a lot of money. Some folks we know absolutely love theirs, others wish they'd never spent the money. It's a hard one as we love the idea of healthier cooking, we do sous vide occasionally etc. and the Miele certainly promises much. Well done, thank you. We’ve had some unpleasant experiences recently. Wish companies would just stick to the knitting. Read, research, compare, repeat. It used to be, quality is worth its price. Not true at present. Appliance makers should collaborate,to reduce consumer frustrations.

I buy turn knob appliances, no keypad operation. They are more senior friendly and last longer. I don’t buy bells and whistles, just basic functionality. I stay away from too many small countertop electrical appliances (no insta pot) because I basically use a small slow cooker, a rice cooker, a electric kettle, and a blender; nothing else.

I just got a new microwave, oven, and dishwasher, I’m so glad when I went to Lowe’s to buy, the salesman was awesome, he talked me out of black stainless saying the same thing about it.

my mom had a combination washer/dryer that worked very well for 15 years. It survived her, we sold it with my parents' house. Electric ovens work great, they're the norm here and have been for decades. Far lower fire and explosion hazard, which is why they became so popular in the first place.

Great advice and insight, terrific channel. I wish you were in Los Angeles, I'd gladly pay a premium for my appliances to know that I'm getting value for my money and I'm not about to stumble into buying junk. I just bought an LG refrigerator. I had a few questions, I first went online, then called LG. Two hours later I gave up (the operators didn't actually know anything and were looking at the same useless web pages that made me call them in the first place. I figured out enough to swap the door, shrug off any other questions I had and just got on with it. One troubling detail. Doing research prior to buying and while trying to set it up, I found many people asking, "Is the stainless steel door magnetic?" (I know that generally stainless isn't but nickle content varies so some stainless is) Every answer was "No, the doors are not magnetic." My magnets say otherwise. Whose answering these questions? (That's a long beef I've had with Apple. Have a problem and they direct you to the customers supporting customers web chat where.... you can find a lot of people with the same issue or question; of course they don't have answers that's why we're there. It's like going to the doctor for a medical problem but instead of ever getting to see the doctor, you can only speak to other people in the waiting room. If they have the same symptoms they might have some knowledge- if they knew the cure they wouldn't be there. How effective is that going to be? When the Magic Mouse (version 1) had reliability issues the top rated answer was You should only use the Apple branded rechargeable AA batteries because _they're a slightly different size_ than all other AA batteries. Seriously! The world's largest company was addressing a widespread consumer issue with pure nonsense. The second answer was how to fold paper to squeeze into the battery compartment. The answer I finally arrived at was, get a Logitech mouse.)

I purchased a gas dryer many years ago (a well-known brand). Unfortunately, I found that it took more than 3x the time to dry clothes than an electric dryer. Yes, the dryer was vented properly. Just thought I would mention it.

We just bought appliances for a new house. Washer and dryer choice were the mid range Speed Queen still made in Wisconsin!

We have a combo steam oven from Miele, it was our best remodeling decision, we use it every day. Years later we try new functions and haven't been disappointed yet.

Induction is the way to cook! With my setup, you can take the pot off the burner and the surface is only slightly warm. All the heat is transferred to the pan, and it cooks like a beast!!

Thank you for this video! I am not sure if it is just limited to Samsung, but I have a French door fridge with ice and water in the door. The ice maker is nothing but trouble. Before I bought it I wondered why they would have an ice maker in a refridgerator compartment, but I thought they had engineered it to work this way. I regret not going with my gut on that one. If I had to do it again, I would get a refrigerator with the ice maker in the freezer. I spoke to a repairman on e who was servicing this ice maker and he said any of them with this design do the same thing (ice up). He said nobody has a good solution for this issue.

Black stainless. Looks nice but I always show people our nicked up floor model. You need to look into what "black stainless" really is. It's not an "oxide" coating. It's a thin polymer coating, think of it like a lacquer. If it was an oxide coating like gun bluing, it could be retouched but the simple fact is that that you can't blue stainless steel.

Our Maytag fridge died after 10 yrs. We replaced with a Samsung, horrible issues with ice maker freezing up. We have a 46 yr old Amana we use in our garage. Still running great. The only thing I have to do now for it is to replace some door gaskets.

Thank you for this valuable information. I will watch more video's before I buy any appliances that are a waste of money. I bought a Kenmore washer and dryer back in the 90's and still working great other than the dryer is needing a heating element and timer knob. Also a GE electric range I'm guessing that was bought back in 1978 for this house and it is still working great other than I had to replace the heating element and a burner assembly unit and a Whirlpool microwave from the 80's that is still working. I use this more than the stove. So it seems that appliances made back about 20 to 30 years or so ago are far more reliable than todays new technology ones with all the computerize failure parts.

I have been replacing all my appliances as of late. I bought a Samsung gas oven which does everything, and I am very disappointed in the air-fry feature. You are spot on. I have also found that Maytag has the best warrantys on the market. It has a 10 year warranty on its dishwasher. Well, I have found dishwashers only last about 10 years, so this is a great warranty. It also has a 10 year warranty on the magnetron in its microwaves. Again, microwaves only last about 10 years, so again, a great warranty. I have never owned a Maytag appliance before, but I am becoming very partial to their appliances and will pay a little more for quality.

We bought one of those super quiet dishwashers. Three years later, it started leaking from the bottom. After getting repair estimates ranging from $250 and up, I decided to repair it myself. It was just a $10 gasket that needed to be changed. I recount all this as I could not find the RU-vid video for the repair that was on the brand of my dishwasher. Turns out, it didn't matter as I discovered that >90% of the internals of any dishwasher, whether the bottom of the line or top of the line, are exactly the same. So yeah, no more high-end priced dishwashers for us ever again.

I love you guys, but I have to say, after using one in Europe, I bought an LG washer/dryer combo and I love it. I bought it used, so it is now about 5 years old. It does require the lint filter to be cleaned monthly and I clean the gaskets and door after every wash. Another owner of the same model on Amazon updates his enthusiastic review on a regular basis. He felt his machine wasn't drying as well as it should and, being handy, removed the cabinet and vacuumed it out-it was pretty linty. A coworker mentioned that she and her husband did that to her standard washer, which puzzles me a bit, but hey. I may do a proactive clean on mine, but I still love it.

My stove came with the air fryer and I love it. I also bought the black stainless appliances and so easy to clean compared to my regular stainless at the cottage. No regrets to date.

I know now-a-days you buy what they have available. But keep in mind: in general, no matter what the device, the more features it has, the more parts there are on it to wear out. And the reality is that you will never use more than a small number of available features (maybe 10%). How many of us truly use our TVs and home stereos to their full capacity? There are like 50 buttons on the remote and I use maybe 5 of them. Most of the buttons on the remote or the device itself I've never touched. And I have a degree in electrical engineering. Our washer has about 20 buttons on it, and 99% of the time we load clothing, add soap & softener, and hit "start".

Incorrect about the dishwasher. I was told this same thing you said by the appliance guy when we build our home. So I went with that instead of the extra quiet one I wanted. It was not quiet as you say. Not all decibels are equal in a home setting. I now have the extra quiet one I wanted in the beginning and it is as advertised and I love it. It is SUPER quiet.

This is helpful. We used to own a combo washer & dryer. They’re not worth it. We only run wash on it. But when we use the dryer option it began to have issues. It lasted 10 years with 5+ fixes. The mechanic refused to fix our machine after we reached their limit. He said, “I won’t fix it anymore, get a new machine”. The 5+ fixes was at year 10. 😅 We got a new one recently, an LG. The old one was an LG too. Their washers are amazing. I highly recommend their machines. From what I heard the dryer has a 5 star rating on energy. 😮 Very Impressive.

I had a Bosch washer-dryer combo which was made in the late 1990s, the only issue it ever had was the bearing failing on the blower fan (after almost twenty years daily use) - an easy fix. It had a lint removal cycle consisting of a deep rinse with fast drum rotation, which seemed to work well enough. There have been combos around since the late 40s, and the mid 50s Bendix Duomatic combo worked very well - there are a number of them in collections today. I guess the newest machines are much more cheaply made, sadly. Even Miele quality is not what it used to be.

We do not have a range. We live tiny and my wife has figured how to cook with just one portable induction burner, a microwave oven and a very good Frigidaire 24” under counter oven. The portable induction burner when not in use resides in an under counter drawer, thus freeing up its footprint for other use. We can both work on food preparation in kitchen which is less than 8 x 8’ (32 sqft). Our entire apartment is 550 sqft (50 sq m).

I replaced a Bosch DW last year. I originally bought it because of low water use (septic). It lasted 20 years. When I bought a new one just like the old one the saleswoman said "this one will not last 20 years". I appreciated her honesty. The new one is even quieter than the old one, which was not loud. But the real reason I'm commenting is to tell about my in-laws reefer. A GE bought when they got married in 1947. Just sold it for $100., still keeping the beer ice cold 70 years later! The gasket was shot and the finish was gone, but it still did the job.

This is a great topic. I learned some of these topics the hard way by getting ripped off. Here are a few things I learned from personal experience. NEVER BUY AN OVEN/STOVE RANGE WITH A COMPUTER ON IT. This was an expensive lesson. I purchased a high end KitchenAid home use range that was computer controlled. The computer selections never worked properly in the first place but the worst problem was when the control board blew out. That rendered the oven completely useless. The cost of the replacement board was 25% of the initial cost of the appliance. That may have been acceptable but there was no lifetime guarantee on the replacement board. The first board blew out after a few months so I came to the conclusion that the appliance was a piece of junk and threw it out. I replaced it with a commercial restaurant range because no home use ranges were available without computer controls. The restaurant range uses rugged, reliable, time proven conventional circuitry that stands up to restaurant use year after year. The heat inside the oven chamber is even and precisely calibrated with the dial. That said, calibrating the dial setting to the oven temperature is a quick and easy adjustment so the temperature selected on the dial is the same as an independent thermometer inside the oven. The stove top burners put out an even heat pattern from a low setting to the highest setting which helps prevent burning and scorching on the bottom of the pans. DISHWASHER NOISE: Usually the only difference between a "quiet" dishwasher and a "noisy" dishwasher is a thin foam pad over the outside of the chamber. This is a typical marketing ripoff. If dishwasher noise is really a problem, either install a pad yourself or run the dishwasher when you aren't in the room. I run my dishwasher at night when I go to bed. Since I sleep in the bedroom and not the kitchen, dishwasher noise is no issue. LEARN HOW TO DO YOUR OWN APPLIANCE REPAIR WORK: The best investment I ever mads was taking an HVAC course and an APPLIANCE REPAIR COURSE. The courses I took were PENN-FOSTER correspondence courses due to having to work around my job. A classroom course may have been better due to the hands on aspect. Since I was working on my own appliances, I was able to get plenty of hands on experience at home. Doing my own repair work was another important lesson I learned by getting ripped off from a "professional" service call. Our central heating/air system went out in the middle of winter. My wife called the company that sold us the unit and they sent out one of their "professional" technician. He put in a new motor capacitor, which was the initial problem plus a new thermostat. The bill was over $500.00. When I looked up the price of the thermostat on the internet it was a $25.00 part. They charged me $375.00. I also looked up the price for the blower motor capacitor and it was around $15.00. They charged me $155.00 for the capacitor. That was bad enough but the real problem was when the technician left, the furnace still didn't work. He never bothered to properly test it before he left. I called the company back so they sent the same technician over. He saw that the furnace wasn't working and told me that the main control board was bad and needed to be replaced. Then he told me that the cost of the board would be $1200.00 but since the furnace was out of warranty I should purchase a new unit. His quote on the new unit was $14,000.00. I looked up the cost of the replacement control board and it was only $125.00; not $1200.00. Not only that but as I found out by troubleshooting the furnace myself; there was nothing wrong with the original control board. When I did my own troubleshooting I discovered that the "professional" technician didn't label the wires he removed and had several wires improperly reconnected. I found the main problem by checking the temperature in the chamber above the heat exchanger. It was too high which caused the sensors to trip and shut the furnace off. After checking the vents and ducts for any blockage I then looked for a problem in the main blower. I purchased a tachometer from Ebay for about $10.00 and tested the blower speed. The blower was running below the recommended speed so I began tracing the wires around the blower motor. It turned out that the "professional" technician sent out by the HVAC company had the motor wires shorted out on the capacitor terminals. When I put the wires on the correct capacitor terminals the furnace worked perfectly. There was nothing wrong with the thermostat and nothing wrong with the control board. By taking repair courses and doing the work myself I saved $14,000.00 on the central furnace/air conditioner alone. Since then I have also repaired or rebuilt our dishwasher, refrigerator, washer, and dryer. Just a simple replacement of the washing machine door latch is a $375.00 service call. The part costs $15.00. I replaced the blower motor in our stove vent. The original motor is no longer available and I was told the the entire stainless steel vent would have to be replaced for $1600.00. Since the vent was stainless steel it is in exactly the same condition as when it was new. I bought a new motor with fan that was close to the original for $22.00. By removing the bolts in the new motor and putting in different bolts, I was able to adapt the new motor to the old bracket. It works perfectly. The time and money spent for the courses and cost of the tools saved us many thousands of dollars. We are no longer at the mercy of having to purchase new appliances every few years because they are "OUT OF WARRANTY". Its good to see your kitchen is so practical hotplates and a wall oven for ease of use and awareness of safety. In my kitchen I have gas hotplates and an electric wall oven and will always have it this way. After I had a bad experience when I lived in a house with only electrical appliances and one particular day we had guests over for lunch and there was a power outage and I had to wait for the power to come back so I can finish cooking the lunch and it was an hour delay it was so frustrating.

Another point you might like to make is...washer dryers...the wash part can take ( for example ) a 9lb wash load but they dont tell you it wont "go" into Dry mode if the load is over 6lbs... wake up and your loads still only sun dry...so you need to remove a part of the wash load..in order to get the "dryer" to work... Not Fun !

The best option to Air Fry Mode is to buy an air fryer. (: Line with aluminum foil, put it anywhere in the kitchen, and you can get a good model for under $75 (pre-inflation). I can’t even think why’d you need to have it as part of another appliance! Thanks for the video!

I agree with not buying an appliance that you won't use or take the time to learn. I bought the Wolf Steam Convection Combo oven. It takes a long tine to really learn how to use it properly but OMG, the best appliance I've ever purchased!!!! I wouldn't move to another home without one!

Today most of these appliances are made by 3 main manufacturers. They use the same compressors, and even the most expensive have the same internal parts.

LOL last time I was visiting friends in England, I used the combo washer/dryer. (Very popular over there, mostly due to space issues.) A week's worth of socks, underwear, and tee shirts took five hours!

I agree with everything you said! I have been an appliance tech for 22 years and these are things nobody considers. It's how they look on the showroom floor and Crap-sumers Reports that sway people's buying decisions. Carry on!

Another thing is the more ‘bells and whistles’ the appliance has, the more likely to have some kind of service break down. Example: ice maker dispenser on the door of the refrigerator. Ask an appliance repairman what he repair the most. For the cost of ONE service call you can buy a small freestanding countertop ice maker that makes ice quickly and efficiently and keep its frozen and makes more when needed.

Amen to the downdraft vents!!! Our home was built in 1978 and the original Jenn Air range was here when we moved in. We replaced with another downdraft because we couldn't afford to re-do the ducting. They're terrible.

Just wanted to add in those mounted combination microwave ovens with the range vent hood built in. The slightest thing goes wrong and you're likely down two appliances and the parts are expensive and possibly hard to find anywhere. In fact nearly all combo appliances will be bad ideas except for a good toaster oven IF it suits your lifestyle.

Beware of Whirlpool refrigerators! The one I have has no suction relief vent! When loading your groceries and close the door the suction is so bad you can't open the door again for a minute until the suction bleeds away! ULTRA MADDENING! (trick: Reach into the ice maker chute with your finger and lift the flap to relieve the suction.)

Related to the downdraft vent: the downdraft stove/range. We have an older Jenn-Air downdraft stove that came with the house. Sadly, there are only two brands of those to choose from when the day comes to replace it: Jenn-Air and KitchenAid. They come with a hefty price tag, too… around $3,200. The alternative would be to buy a conventional stove and install an overhead vent, but the ductwork would cut through two kitchen cabinets, or would have to serpentine around those cabinets into the dining room.

I like the condensation dryers, but the Bosch self-cleaning is a failure waiting to happen. You simply can't get at the condenser to clean it if you have animals and the additional hair builds up and blocks it from working. The previous condensation dryer I had worked for years because regular cleaning of the condenser did the job.

Hang dry instead of tumble drying. It's better for your clothes. If you live in a cold climate you can hang dry them indoors and get free humidity to your dry air. A air purifier is a must to improve indoor air, especially during winter.

The only one i really disagree with is the dual fuel range, and here's the reason. I pressure can. Induction or radiant stovetops have glass surfaces, that are only rated for 50 lbs. My canner weighs 33 lbs...empty. Only a gas stovetop can handle more than 50 lbs.

Had a White combo washer/dryer that worked great; until a "guest" forgot to take some nails out of his pocket, and jammed the machine. But that was over 40 years ago and they don't makem like they used to. My 38 year old Kenmore (whirlpool) refrigerator is still going strong, as are my 40 year old Kenmore washer and dryer. And my 40 year old Kenmore dishwasher too.

I love this. Thank you. Looking at replacing my double wall ovens because we never use them and I'd rather have the cabinet space. I'm just getting a range instead of my cook top. I really do not like the cook top. I have an air fryer/toaster oven that I use a lot. I can even roast a turkey breast in it. So I will be taking that advice to heart. I was lookingnfor a range with an air fryer. I'll just keep using my Ninja Omni.
