I purchased a Max6 g2 combo with 4990 1650kv sensord motor, and I don't know exactly what is going on and what degrees I should make, for example, the turbo bust timing, the punch and the initial throttle settings to get the best performance without doing any harm. I use my car for drag racing, but it is a bit difficult to know which setting is the best!

Dear Ryan, I have a Proboat Miss Geico 36 V2 equipped with the stock 3674 1900kv 4-pole motors. I have thus far been unable to determine whether the motors are D or Y winds. The owners manual doesn’t really tell you what the stock timing should be. When I plugged in the ESC’s to the programmer they are at 7.5*. A D wind is said to work best at 0-4* and a Y wind 10-20*? What would suggest for optimal acceleration for 6S per motor? Thanks, Chris Curry.

Great video but I have a question if you have a motor that has adjustable timing on it, does it have to be censored for its work when you change the timing?

ok bought a 5100kv g2 hobbywing, I'd like to keep Temps down and Increase toque on the low end so turning the timing down is what I assume I should do, what is a good starting point

Not quite, there's more parameters to timing than Kv alone.

Thanks for your guidance, i ve been told that is better running an esc in full throttle rather than half throttle, is it true and if yes why ?

At full throttle the ESC does not need to have PWM to control RPM. At partial throttle (Closer to 85%) the ESC must chop the signal to achieve a slower motor output speed. Some ESC's can get hotter at a partial throttle setting vs full throttle. This has never been an issue for me.

Hi Ryan, I'm working on a DIY bow thruster for a RC tugboat. It's basically a simple paddle type pump that can run in both directions. The pump works really well, but I noticed that the motor (1000kV outrunner, running on 3s) warmed up pretty quick even though it was pulling only 6A during the test. According to the specs, it's 3 pole 8T. Upon checking the manual, the ESC timing has a standard value of 15º, so I'm thinking that this may be too high. What is your initial thought on this please?

I have found outrunners prefer a decent amount of timing. Experiment with different values of timing and check temps each time.

Hi there. Really enjoying your videos. Is timing increase on an ESC any different from increasing timing on a physical motor? Also, how do you weigh increasing timing, over increasing gearing? In your boat example, could you have received the same results by going down a few teeth on a spur, or up 1t on a pinion? Is there anyway to calculate which would be more beneficial, or just basically trial and error and see what gets too hot?

Timing increase while operating in sensorless mode is very different then timing on the motor. Trial and error is the best way to determine the optimal operating settings including timing and gearing. Timing can get you a more fine degree of change in your setup. It can be similar to increase pinion gear teeth count by a partial step. Such as 0.5 teeth. Something like this is not possible to achieve on a gear but through timing it can be possible.

It's personal preference and a balance between Temps and performance.

Do many folks notice less cogging with low or zero timing? More specifically I'm running a Spektrum 150A Smart ESC with Spektrum 2200kv. Capable of 6s but running 4s. I have noticed that the smaller 130A version seems to cog less at startup. I wonder if running so much less than its peak voltage has anything to do with cogging at startup? Very helpful! Thank you! You can adjust timing within the ESC. This can be done on most sensored and sensorless ESC's. I would recommend a sensorless setup for boats. It will also save some dollars.

I have an issue with my rc boat setup I have a 38mm CNC aluminium prop with 1.6 pitch so far it's seemed to like that the best brushless 3670 4 pole 3y? I am guessing that means 3 turn 1700kv motor and a flycolor 150a esc now the stock settings are 3 put of 5 for pull start and 15 degrees (which is in the middle of the advancement) my problems are that it doesn't plane quickly like to stay on plane on 4s (waiting to get the kinks out before going to 6s) and when it does get up on plane and I start to accelerate after abit the esc cuts out for a sec and the boat starts to stop and then as it slows down it gets back into power and working my thought is the esc is not advanced enough for the more powerful motor so I should try to advance it 1 set to 18.75 degrees still leaving 22.50 and 26.25 what would you do in my case???

Hello. What boat is it? What is its length? What batteries are you using? C rating? What is the average internal resistance of the pack per cell? What performance do you get out of stock or low timing?

it is the ft011 v hull 25.5 inch and I am using 2200mah 4s lipos 50c and 2, 3s 2200mah lipos for 6s 120c and 50c. stock it runs much slower on these batteries and has a hard time planing and once it gets going the esc cuts out never hot motor or esc alway nice and cool... so should I advace timing and push the punch up to 4or 5 (only goes up to 5)????

I'd need to see a video of the boat getting on plane to comment about that. It sounds like your batteries are not supplying the power demanded of them and the ESC goes in to LVC. I would not touch timing when you are having issues with the ESC cutting out. If you are having these issues on 4s, 6s may be even more problematic.

so i am going to take both batteries both the same 2200mah 45c and parallel them together to get higher mah and c rate

Taking the packs and placing them in parallel will effectively double your capacity and maximum discharge current. C rating stays the same. The voltage would however be the voltage of the one pack you use. (Voltage doesn't double) If you did place 2 3s packs in parallel, you would be able to increase the size of the propeller as you would be turning the propeller much slower.

@@RCexplained hello wish to ask you some questions please , do i have to program the amount of poles a motor have or does nt matter ? Any esc can handle different amount of motor poles? Does the timing application apply the same way on outrunner motors? Thanks

The general basis of timing applies to both inrunner and outrunners. You do not have to program the amount of poles that a motor has. Your ESC will be able to figure this out.

@@RCexplained thanks for replying so quick i really do appreciate, currently i m choosing a the right esc for a scorpion 5035 670kv outrunner on10s on a boat, manufacture told me i can run any 300amp esc , i m trying to figure out which one is the most reliable and what programmings i have to consider the most, it s really difficult to choose which, it looks like it s a trial and error issue ,wish to do a reliable setup that s why i am asking a professional ,what do you suggest as a 300amp

Hi c.leech, thanks for the question. No, I did not mean turns. Higher magnetic poles such as on an outrunner tend to like higher timing settings.

@@RCexplained but didn't you say the opposite 15 seconds earlier? The example with the 4 pole inrunner. I'm just getting into rc drag racing and had a sensorless 4 pole 4700kv motor laying around.

I said that a one turn D wound stator typically requires a low timing setting.
