Design thinking is a paradigm and process that has been refined over the past century into an effective and fluid workflow. It forces us out of our heads and into the heads of our audience. It challenges our assumptions and biases and breaks us out of creative ruts into a productive space, focused on finding real solutions to concrete, identifiable problems.
Are all you artists out there bored already?
Well, that's the problem I'd like to focus on solving together today. Artists are often stuck in their own heads, in a self-gratifying loop where we are putting OUR soul and OUR ideas out into the world without a care for what anyone thinks. And yes, that is something we can be proud of. But what if it isn't working? What if we are out of ideas? What if the ideas we put into our drawings aren't effecting people in the way we intended? What then?
This is where trying out a process like design thinking can step in and save us. Design thinking is a structured creative process--but it's a far cry from 'putting ourselves into a box'. It teaches us REAL empathy--not to be confused with arrogantly assuming we know what other people think and feel.
It may seem counter-intuitive at first but give design thinking a chance and try it out next time you find yourself at an impasse. It's a great way to foster new ideas and learn to truly connect with your audience.
This is part five of my Creative Crossovers series. In this series I explore some things that are common knowledge in one creative field that are undiscovered secrets in another.
This is the final episode so far, but let me know if you all love this series enough and I might just put out some more one day.
