Thanks! Another technique is to use a soldering iron or wood burning tool. It can make the grain lines much thicker if you need a larger or more bark-like appearance.
This is really cool! in the end it has almost a cartoony look, but im sure from a good distance away it would be pretty convincing. Out of curiosity, what projects have you used this on?
This was a test for making "wooden" shields out of foam. My daughter got a commission to do a set of four for a wedding, and I was making a sample for her to follow.
Yes, that is exactly the material that I used. You can even do it on 2mm sheets, but you have to be extremely careful to not cut all the way through. The thinnest I would work with is 4mm foam, I think. But I have done this on 10-12mm foam a lot.
