Ok, so this is probably one of the coolest techniques I have ever come up with and as far as I have seen no one else has ever done this before and it could be a huge game-changer. I figured out a super cool way to easily add a wood grain to your EVA foam with no need to burn or etch in lines and no fancy painting skills. And I am going to share it with you right now!
Let me know what Cosplay Questions you might have and I will answer them in a video on this channel!
Here are links to the items I mentioned in the video that I would recommend, if you buy any of them please use these affiliate links, it gives me a kickback at no cost to you that will help me continue to create these videos. Thanks! Cosplay On, My Friend!

I use a plain grinding stone bit from a dremel to get that look and just randomly make whatever pattern and indentations that I want. I do long strokes in places and then use different shaped bits to create texture details and knots. That's the best way I've found to do it with the tools I already have. I've also added a small and medium long round dowel from curved eva foam and used it to create larger branch pieces if it calls for it.

One problem with this technique is that you are going to have repeating areas if you're covering a large surface. In other words, every 6" or so you're going to have that same knot showing up. If you're doing a small section, or if you can stagger your pieces you'd get a more realistic look. As for other textures I'd like to see something for getting texture on scales, other than crumpling foil and ironing it on.

Yeah, you would definitely want to make sure you are offsetting the knots and not just rolling them side by side the whole time :). Oooh, scale texture, that would be cool! :)
