Applying HTV to a bathrobe that is 80% Polyester and 20% Spandex. What heat and time should I use on it?

Follow the instructions from the HTV manufacturer not based on the material for cotton/poly blends.

Great video, very well explained. I doing a Polyester/Rayon/Spandex mix. Can I use sublimation (printer ink) on it instead of HTV and at what temperature? Thanks I will be looking into your ThermoFlex as I don't like the vinyl feeling.

Rayon and spandex will scorch at higher temps sublimation requires. Try our Stretchfers DTF transfers they are thinner and stretchier and can be pressed at lower temps like 280 treelinecustoms.com

Hi, I’m Karen taunton. You responded to my post yesterday about scorching polyester shirts. I responded to you, but they declined to post it🤔. Anyway thought I’d reach out here. This was my post. Troy Young thank you for responding so quickly. I watched your video. Great video! I saw that you have a Cricut press, I only have a Cricut press, not a large heat press. Would you use the same heat setting and time using your thermoFlex turbo with a Cricut press? I used stahls cad-cut premium plus, a sheet of parchment paper at 270/12, with Cricut press. You can see the ‘SQUARE’ left around the image. It is Gildan brand. Anything lower, the vinyl just peels off. Of course this is a test shirt, but my customer says a couple of her shirts are 100% polyester, and some 90% poly, 10% spandex. Not a trio, like in your video. I do not know what brand her shirts are😔. I want to make sure I don’t ruin HER shirts😬😬😬. And let her know if I’m just not able to do them.

The time and temp is set by the HTV specs so you'd use it the same with every heat press. Keep in mind on most shirts, especially medium to dark colors, you'll see a square where it's pressed and that square almost always goes away by letting it cool or with the first washing. I've been doing this a long time and I have yet to see temps below 285 or so for no more than 10-15 seconds ever scorch a shirt, not even with Rayon in it. The problem I have with brands like Gildan is that you can often end up with cheap knock-offs (yes cheaper made than the actual Gildan brand which can be pretty inexpensive). If you buy from a reputable place there's little chance of that happening but places like eBay will often be knockoffs, especially if they seem overly inexpensive, like half normal price. Another sign of cheap shirts is if you apply white or yellow HTV and the dye bleeds through, which means they are cheap shirts with cheap low-energy dye that gets activated with heat. If the shirts are truly 100% polyester there's not much chance you can scorch anything until you get well above 400°, we press polyester at 385-400 for sublimation all the time. If you have never worked with the shirts they are providing, I would provide a disclaimer and ask them to provide one extra shirt of each type to test and make sure it's not going to damage them. That's really the only test you can do. Building up a shirt business is about knowing what you're working with and I know people want to provide their own but you have to have some policies and boundaries, no matter how long you've been doing it. Hope that helps.

Thank you so much ! This really helps. I’m going to definitely talk with her. And wash that shirt!! I also have found some info on a silicon sheet to use . Who knows? I may end up not doing her shirts, hate to pass up monies, but feel I must err on the side of caution. And find a good brand of dri-fit shirts to test for myself. Is there a brand you recommend? It seems that is what everyone wants these days! I am also very grateful to you for taking the time to talk with me, and educate me. I have logged into Bulkvinyl and will be ordering my vinyl from you. I believe customer service is key in all business. You have gone above and beyond to take the time (especially during this holiday weekend) to help me. Even though I wasn’t a customer. It means and says a lot about who you are and your business. 😊
