In this episode of the guitar building series it's time to stain and finish this guitar. I'm using the TLC Sustain guitar stains to give this guitar some color and apply several coats of Trae Lyx hard wax oil topped of with some Chestnut microcrystalline wax.

Congratulation to that, what you do, and this is more than a "work". Seems it is like an inner concept to built guitars! I could learn so much for my actual strat project, and will not laquer it, but do as you show (I looked also other vids from you)! Gorgeous! Thanks a lot, Henry from Germany!!!!

New to the channel and really enjoying your content . I had a slow year with motivation for building only built 2 basses one still not finished lol But watching your vids has made me realise I really miss getting in the workshop after work every evening a fresh build and loving it cheers buddy 👊🏻 When I get to the finishing / staining side I sand to 320 then damp the body to raise the grain then sand again makes a hugh difference when staining and much more of a super flat finish We did it with every piece of furniture at one cabinet makers I work at as standard . The finish comes up so much quicker Livening your channel and approach inspiring and very very tidy work 👌👌 look forward to watching more 👊🏻

Adding a little oil does make quite a difference doesn't it? That's why I love Black Limba. It's such a pretty wood, easy to work with and looks so good with an oil finish. I don't know if my technique is the proper or best way of doing it, but it seems to work for me.

Good idea mix the guitar stains, excelent result with wax oil. For masking, you should try a mask tape quite narrow, you know? The kind that guys use for masking helmets paintings, no leaks.

Are the pores still open in this finish? Or did you apply multiple coats and cut back to fill them in? The finish looks great! I’m trying to achieve that result with the stuff I have on hand since my building budget is beyond shot. I just usually find that open pores don’t look right when I try it.

Amazing! Any tips to stain the fretboard? I have a rosewood scale, very brown on a black gloss body and I HATE IT TO THE GUTS
@UnquendorGuitars
@UnquendorGuitars 3 года назад
Hi Abner, I personally don't have experience with staining a fretboard. The stain will most likely wear off I can imagine. And staining rosewood might also be difficult to get consistent because of it's color. You could look up how to ebonize wood to get an idea. If had to do it I would most likely use black ink or just replace the fretboard with real ebony. Or if the guitar has a bolt on neck, swap out the neck.

I really love the finish! Did you sand down the body between every coat of oil? I want to have a nice satinish finish for my stratocaster but I'm not sure what to use. Do you think I could achieve similar results with wax only? Thank you!!
@UnquendorGuitars
@UnquendorGuitars 3 года назад
Hi Sekor, No I didn't sand between all the coats. I only sand in between coats when I feel the texture is still a bit rough or to polish the final coat a bit extra. An oil finish can give you a very nice satin finish in my opinion. Depending on the type of wood I wouldn't apply wax directly. Most waxes need a very smooth surface so usually an oil finish or even sanding sealer will do as a base before applying wax. Good luck with your project.

Dan, can the hard wax oil be left out and the chestnut microcrytalline wax applied right after the stain? What would be the difference?
@UnquendorGuitars
@UnquendorGuitars 3 года назад
Hi Badmoney, For the microcrystalline wax it is best to have some kind of filler or sealer applied to the surface unless the surface is very dense. If you have open pores the wax gets in there and you can't reach it anymore to buff it out. Possibly leaving dull spots. The hard wax oil I'm using also gives the guitar additional protection against scratches, dents and moisture because it dries real hard. (it's intended to be used on wood flooring) Instead of hard wax oil, or any other finish you could also use the Chestnut sanding sealer as a base for the wax. This is also suggested on the tin by Chestnut, but I haven't tried it myself yet. Their sealers are also very easy to apply. Hope this answered your question.

Having watched many guitar staining videos, I wonder if the black was sanded back more, there would be better detailing in the wood
@UnquendorGuitars
@UnquendorGuitars 4 года назад
Hi Steve, Yes there would have... but that was not the effect I was after. If I had sanded back the black more there would have been more obvious 'highlights' and detailing in the wood. The purple would have been more pronounced and I think the guitar would have looked like a 'purple' guitar. I wanted this guitar to appear as mostly black with just a purple hue. And only with the shifting of light reveal all the details and color shifts. Now I'm curious though about how think the finish turned out?

Is a microcrystalline wax necessary? Wouldn't more layers of hard wax do similar job? Just asking, because I plan to stain and wax my custom guitar, and I am collecting experiences. Most people do: 1.Stain 2. Sanding Sealer 3. Wax/lacque; but I like your way. Let me know, thanks!
@UnquendorGuitars
@UnquendorGuitars Год назад
Hi James1495, It is not really necessary but I like the extra depth and protection it seems to give. At least in my eyes. More layers hard wax oil doesn't always give the best result. At some point the wood doesn't absorb the oil anymore and although you can keep applying more coats the finish doesn't come out as durable in my experience due to the build up of wax and oil and the increased curing time. It takes forever to fully harden.
@gingerjam2192

I really like the color, almost black but with a subtle purple hue. 👍 What’s the reference of your hard wax oil? I’m starting a bass guitar with a wenge/purpleheart neck and a wenge/ash or limba body. I’d like an oil finish as nice as your guitar. And you say it dries hard, that’s a good thing!
@UnquendorGuitars

Hi Ginger Jam, Thank you very much. I'm using the Trae Lyx satin gloss hard wax oil. I don't know how widely available this is outside the Netherlands. A quick google search only showed Dutch sellers and the Trae Lyx website is only in Dutch or French. But I think it might be worth to try another brand hard wax oil. Good luck on your build.

@gingerjam2192 3 года назад
@@UnquendorGuitars Thank you for your answer. I’m French. Trae Lynx is available in the Netherlands and Belgium. It might be possible to order from a Belgian seller. Is it similar to the Rustin danish oil ? Harder ?
@UnquendorGuitars
@UnquendorGuitars 3 года назад
@@gingerjam2192 Oh yeah you might be able to get it from Belgium. I haven't used Rustin danish oil before so I can't tell the difference other than the hard wax oil having, like the name suggests, a hard wax component suspended in the oil. I don't think that's the case with the Rustin Danish oil. My gut feeling is that the hard wax oil should be harder and durable because it is meant to be used on flooring.
@ErebosGR
@ErebosGR 3 года назад
@@gingerjam2192 "Hard wax oil" is, I think, carnauba wax mixed with boiled linseed oil and mineral spirits. If you don't want to mess with ratios, you can first apply 1-2 coats of the boiled linseed oil mixed with mineral spirits (50:50), and then once it's fully cured apply the carnauba wax for added hardness.

Hello sir i build a electric guitar mahogany body its thickness is 2 inch but its heavy what can i do to make it light weight?
@UnquendorGuitars
@UnquendorGuitars 3 года назад
Hi Ronald, To reduce weight you could make the body a little thinner. 1.75" is a more frequent used thickness but if you're not using a tremolo style bridge you could even go thinner. I often make my bodies 1.6" (43mm) thick. If you are using a top on your guitar you could also make some extra cavities underneath the top to get rid of a lot of the Mahogany and reduce weight that way. Or if you want to go a little more extreme you could also cut holes all the way through the body. Essentially you'll have to find ways to get rid of some of the body material to reduce weight but leave enough so you don't compromise the strength and stability of the guitar. Good luck.
