WHAT’S EHLERS-DANLOS SYNDROME?
The Ehlers-Danlos Syndromes (EDS) are a group of more than 13 genetic connective tissue disorders that affect the joints and ligaments, blood vessels, gastrointestinal tract, and autonomic nervous system, among others. The most common type of EDS is hypermobile EDS (hEDS), which used to be known at type III. Some of the most common symptoms and co-morbidities of hEDS include chronic joint pain, joint instability and dislocations, dysautonomia, and GI tract dysmotility.

Hi Izzy. It is so cool that you're pursuing genetic counseling! I am a current student at the JHU/NIH program who has watched your videos in preparation for my EDS clinic experience. I would be happy to review any of your application materials or talk with you about your decision making process when it comes to ranking for the match. Best of luck!

Hi Izzy! I’m 29, married and have worked in the medical billing career for 5 years. I decided that I would to further pursue my healthcare career and wanted to become a genetics counseling. I loved your video but my only thing that makes me worry is that being I have a full time job now and being a wife is that I may not be able to be apart of all the extra curricular that they are looking for. I’m hoping that despite my age and circumstances that I’ll be able to still get all the other requirements in :)

im currently in the 9th grade, im graduating as a junior and there is a lot of pressure on me to pick the colleges im interested in and the major. i want to be the doctor that helps you maintain your eds and other similar conditions too. I have heds and its really important for me to help others with the same condition. i dont really have an eds doctor. i have a cardiologist who has a lot of knowledge on eds and pots but i know i dont want to be a cardiologist. i guess my question here is what are the doctors that maintain hypermobile disorders called because i cant find a straight answer on google. i have looked into genetic counseling but i dont think its for me because once i tell these people they have eds im going to want to treat them and keep in touch and make sure theyre doing okay

I thought the abortion question was a bit invasive until I researched McGills extensive work and research into funding abortion rights, They are quite an amazing school

I also think it makes sense, given that abortion can be a topic of discussion in genetic counseling, especially in the prenatal world! It totally caught me by surprise when she said that though hahaha

The question caught me by surprise during my interview! I think they wanted to see if regardless of your personal views on the topic you’d be able to counsel and support a patient in whatever they decided. I think it was a great question!

Many people major in biology or genetics, but all of these genetic counseling programs are very happy to accept students with any major as long as they've completed the prerequisites
