(Links Below) It's been 40 years since Mount Saint Helens erupted. Last year my good friend Nathan and I shot a Milky Way photography training course on the big volcano for ON1's Plus photography community I coach in. In honor of the anniversary, ON1 is making this video training course free on their site. In this video I'll excerpt some of the best parts of that course and introduce Lume Cube's latest light, the amazingly tiny, but powerful Mini Panel. The full Milky Way video and Mini Panel are linked below.
An aside, since creating this training, I've really embraced shorter Milky Way exposures following the "NPF" rule instead of the "500" rule for pinpoint stars that I talk about here. Look for more details about that as this summer's Milky Way season comes into full bloom.

Giving you MUCH credit here for the pre-work, photo-taking, and post-edit work required to pull off the beautiful final result ! And thinking about the cost expended in equipment, time, and travel for a passion-driven adventure ! It is a surreal experience many people can only dream about. Congratulations on your experience with the event and thanks for sharing it in such fine detail.

We can still get the core into November. We are looking at going to Mt St Helen's early Nov and there's plenty of dark sky and we can get the core.

This is awesome. I love St. Helens. I'm about to focus on nightscapes and deep sky photography. I have a D810 currently being modified to full-spectrum, and a Z6. I sold my Sigma 20 mm Art because it is a tank to carry around trekking. I currently got the 20mm f/1.8 s for my Z camera. I am glad that you can visit the place now. I recommend a Bhatinov mask attached to a cheap UV filter for focusing. A $15 solution for focusing.

You can use the Z6's low light AF on a planet and it nails it. The Z6 will blow your mind for this work. :)

@@HudsonHenryPhoto I am really happy with the Z6 purchase. I brought it to Galapagos last December. I am now waiting for the economic uncertainty to pass and I will definitely get the Z7. I do have the Lume Cube 2.0, and the Mini is arriving tomorrow. I enjoy your contents. Keep them coming.

Another really good wide for Astro work is the Irix 15mm. Really good coma control plus it has an indent for infinity focusing and good pricing.

That's one I'd like to test out. :) I've been thinking about it. Your loving it?

Hudson Henry Photography yes so far, I have not had it very long so I have not shot with it a great deal. I know the 14 mm Rokinon is everyone’s love child right now but the Irix has gotten little attention but the reviews have been very good and it is over $300.00 less than the Rokinon.

@@MarkRomine I'm no fan of the regular Rokinon, but the 2.4 SP is a gem. It's infinity is way off, but I calibrate that with some colored tape to know where it's at. :-)

I tend to use Skylum software for image editing, but I do have the free version of ON1. Would love to get out and give Astrophotography a try with my D750 Nikon, although my wide angle 16-35mm is F/4, so I should pick up some kind of budget lens that might work. That, or a higher end lens, which I could acquire in 'preowned' format. Would love to order the 'mini' cube Hudson, but being Canadian, I can't access my Blaine mailbox, so I may have to wait a month or so when the border opens, for the ability to receive it! Thanks for letting us know, and all the info you give in your video's!

A great video. I have a Z 7 and now I might get a Z 6! I was considering the Rokinon 24mm F1.4 until I heard your thoughts on that less coma with the Rokinon 14mm 2.4. Thank you also for the focusing advice.

Such an amazing video Hudson! A masterclass in 39min. The value that you give in your videos is just out of this world and so inspiring. I still remember the first time I went out with my photography club to shot the milky way and it was such an incredible experience, alone in the middle of nowhere in complete silence watching the night sky. Can´t wait to do it again! Keep up the good work, and stay safe!

Greetings Hudson and I want tell you how much I enjoy your images as well as your insights and knowledge. I have a Z6 just got the 14 -30 Z lens for multitask use including night sky. my concern is that I find at wide open I get a type of lens flare around small light sources such distant street lights or getting sun stars. as I close the lens down it reduces till about f 6.3 to f 7 it disappears ( I have sample images) do you feel there is a defect in my nikor Z 14-30 S lens or is normal

A great ATS which inspires me to blend some of my milky way images Hudson and to look at the On1 Plus video. I have not watched it for some strange reason!

How do you focus the "focus by wire" lenses that do not have a fixed manual scale. Thanks

For night photo and for lighting the background what Panel do you suggest, the normal or the new mini? thank you
@HudsonHenryPhoto
@HudsonHenryPhoto 4 года назад
The Mini is wonderfully small and fabulous, but the full size panel has 3 times the output. That said, sometimes the full size panel actually is too bright. i had to bounce too of them into double arch becasue at thier lowest settings with diffusers on it was too bright. Each have plusses and minuses. If I had to choose, it would be the big panel though. It's at my links page: www.hudsonhenry.com/atslinks
