April 19, 1775 - Mass Grave in Menotomy - Battles of Lexington & Concord  

ERRATA: At about the 3 minute mark, I state that the recently-reinforced British column approached Menotomy at about 3 or 4pm under the command of Lt. Col. Francis Smith. However, since by this time the reinforcements under Lord Hugh Percy had arrived and been consolidated with Smith’s men, I think Lord Percy would’ve assumed command given he held the rank of brigadier general and thus outranked Smith. So after giving it some thought, I believe I should have said that the British column approached Menotomy under the command of Lord Percy. Just wanted to mention it. Thank you!!

Grisly details are important to understand that the fight for freedom is bloody and a serious business. Knowing that once you give up your freedoms, taking them back comes at a very heavy price. Looky here, we are in NE TN, home of the Overmountain Boys who assembled and cross the Appalachians to deliver victory at King's Mountain. Anyway, here in Elizabethton, TN there is a festival celebrating those times at Sycamore Shoals and Fort Wautauga where the men mustered. It is celebrated every Sept/Oct time period and wouldn't it be fun to take a bonafide Revolutionary War Historian to come ALL the way to East TN and enjoy the festivities. So there you are, duly invited, and if need be, we can even help you get around to enjoy the American Revolution, southern-style!

Katie, thank you for providing a very good documentary of the early engagement of our war for independence. I have always loved history, especially military history. Your presentation and insights into things I haven't heard before are remarkable. We owe so much to those men who gave their blood and gave us our freedoms. I served a tour in Vietnam and am well acquainted with the horror of battle. I had a very close friend in Vietnam and his accent is very much like your own. I am from Arkansas, and he was in the New England states. I never got the chance to find out which state he came from. He was a great guy and a brave soldier. I wish to see more of your excellent videos.

I never read any story of the British retreat from Lexington--that ever mentioned that the British shot back, let alone sent out flanking columns. And, colonists killed in that number...never heard that in class.I wish Your videos could be shown to grade school classes, so they would learn that this was not just an almost nothing, but a battle-royal. I knew I had various ancestors fighting in the Revolution, but Your videos then brought up Samuel Cook killed at Menotomy! It's almost like a hidden-in plain sight -history. I was also stunned to hear that the British soldiers-by explicit orders-committed such atrocities...the rebels were considered non-persons.....

So glad I found this, thank you

Great videos Katie. I grew up in Reading and went to Joshua Eaton School. He was a farmer in Reading who fought in the war. There is also a nice historic place called Parker Tavern. Been to Lexington and Concord many times and growing up here, I just am entranced by the history.

Enjoy your presentations on history in 1775. I live in a Revolutionary veterens house Moses Emerson. Rev. Nathaniel Adams, John Adams younger brother built the first stick house and church in this town, Barnstead, NH. Captain John Locke who settled Portsmouth, NH also established in farm in North Barnstead up the road from me. I think only the foundations and cellar hole is the only thing left. Been living here for 42 years now and been living in the old traditions, now a homestead that I'm slowly keeping up with gardens my wife and I been working on all these years. Not done yet and have a friend who's family been here in their old saltbox colonial since the time of the King and when our state was federated in these United States and the first 4 town meetings were in his house. Like to meet you sometime but I'm not a historian as yourself. Peace, Doug Darrell

I feel almost “touristy” now having visited only Lexington and Concord! 😊 I did know about the retreat action but never broke it down to such detail. Your are a blessing to my education! Now, it’s on my bucket list for this year! 👍🏻 A couple of points for discussion? You refer to the colonist as “provincials” and “Americans”. I’m curious what the difference is between colonist and provincial. And were they truly “Americans” at this point or, British subjects living in the Americas? I know it’s kinda splitting hairs but I believe also, that it’s important to understand the sheer grit that was required considering that these folks were rebelling against their king and country, George and Great Britain. Your channel is so amazing and exciting!! I’m so consumed by it!! Now, I’m off to watch your Sam Whittmore episode because THAT man, was the granite that served as the foundation for the development of a long, bloody and painful struggle for freedom and independence! 👍🏻🫡

There's a marker in Arlington center commemorating the old men of Menotomy who weren't allowed to march to Lexington, so they set up and ambushed the British supply wagons following behind. When the British went over the wall after them, an 86 tear old was shot, bayoneted and left for dead. But they picked him up, took him to a house where he was nursed back to health and lived into his 90s

I had no idea that graveyard was there. I visited Arlington on my visit to Lexington and was right there too.

One of my ancestors fought in the Revolutionary War. His name is David Sprong. I believe he is buried in a grave in Ohio.

They were united in their commitment to freedom and Liberty. Can we say that today.
