Hi Pacca, I'm curious if you could help me out with this one. I've been looking into SMPS Z80 for a few days now, as Sonic 2 uses that format. Had some fun with memory editing and things like that to help me confirm/reject some assumptions, but I discovered that S2CDR doesn't use SMPS Z80 at all! I found some addresses related to music playback in 68k RAM (so it's SMPS 68000?), so I was wondering where the music was decompressed to, if at all? Is it the S1 driver? SMPS 68000 seems different enough to SMPS Z80 to deserve some theory of its own...
S2CDR uses a project called the clone driver 2.0, a heavily modified version of the sonic 1 sound driver. The sonic 2 driver needs to compress sound data and deal with bank switching, so I swapped to it very early in the projects life because I was more comfortable with it. The sound driver is actually one of the more outdated parts of the project, ideally I'd swap it out by now. It may change in the far future again, but it'd require a lot of work... If your curious about it, the guide to install it is somewhere on SSRG. The version used in S2CDR was made by clownacy.
@@Pacca64 Wow, that was a very quick reply! Thanks a lot! I might start fiddling around with clone driver, then. Seems like I won't "have to" write my own Saxman compressor, for now at least.
So are you gonna continue the whole 2021 demo Sonic 2 CD Remix? I've been looking your full playable previous build of 2018 for 5 years. I hope the new build demo will be awsome!
It's complicated... It's mostly on life support right now. Still not in the mental state to get a zone artist on board, and without that, the entire purpose of the hack is on hold. Still recieves minor bug fixes from time to time. Most of the feature development is going into a related but different sonic 2 Rom hack that I think better utilizes my skills (aka doesn't need new zone art) On the bright side, the new project is acting as a confidence building exercise, but yeah, I wouldn't expect S2CDR updates to go public anytime soon. @@Pacca64 That sucks. You know, I'd honestly love to help in any way possible, but unfortunately I'm far less qualified than you in nearly every aspect. And I have the artistic skills of a 5 year-old, to boot. Still, you mentioned "zone art". What exactly does that entail? Level design, for instance?
@@DelayRGC pretty much just modifying the level art itself. Doesn't just require art skill either, they'd need to be familiar with Sonlvl and the limitations of the genesis and the sonic 2 level format. It's not to complicated to learn and work with, but most people don't have that experience, and those who do are often busy with their own projects. Someone did offer to help in 2018, which is why EhZ bad future and ARZ Good future got new art in the ShC18 demo, but they had to stop do to irl stuff, and haven't been available since. One or two people have offered since, but I haven't been in the headspace to conduct other people on a project since 2020 and 2019, those years hit me really hard. I'm still recovering from them, and still have a long ways to go...
