It was brilliant. Still remember this hoax quite well - I fell for it completely. Started to wonder, though, when there was this caller who was given a really hard time by Ken/Rob for never having watched Gavin and Stacy. Couldn't quite understand why Ken was so unusually keen on that series, hahaha.
Loved this! I listened to Ken every morning. Sadly missed. Never realised it was 1 April but thought Ken was drunk! It all seemed a bit off. Never got it! Even when listeners said ‘ you sound different !😂😂😂😂’. Heard Ken say later, even his family didn’t know and I believe he said his sister (apologies if it wasn’t) or similar thought he’d had a few whiskeys before going on! This was the best April Fools ever.x Brill.
Same here. Love Rob, he cracks me up doing his Ronnie Corbett and Terry Wogan impressions on WILTY. He got Ken done to a tee, never even noticed it was'nt Ken himself as it was identical. listened to Ken for years, especially Pop Master.
I have just come back on coach from 3 day hike from Wales to London and sat next to a girl. Tears were rolling off my face and I’m convinced she thought I was upset about something.
I remember listening to this. It was great fun. It took me about 10 minutes to work it out I think. I remember afterwards hearing the BBC had lots of emails with people worrying about Ken and questioning if he was having a break down. I remember listening all morning and assuming after half hour it would be revealed but time went on and I was amazed that it went all the way to 12pm. Good laugh and remember it so clearing 6 odd years later.

I swore I wasn't going to fall for an April Fool that year - and this got me before I even got out of bed (I live in the US - I wasn't having a long lie). Thanks for the terrific edit (though it goes a bit off the rails at ~31min).
Brilliant; love the bits where he tells Lynn Bowles he's 'sitting on something big', and refers to Rob Brydon as 'the little Welsh guy with the bad skin'.....
Just seen in an interview with Rob Brydon that even Kens sister was fooled by this. But listening now you can hear Robs voice and Welsh tones. Rob is a very fast talker as to Ken who is slower.
Though a great upload, this isn't the full Rob cut. Among the missing 10 mins, it omits my favourite bit - Rob talking utter gibberish for a whole minute. In fact, that was probably the bit when Ken's sister rang Ken's wife to say get him off the air, he's drunk.
Heh he yes, I remember listening to this and wondering how long it would be before he was 'quietly' carted off by the producers! Very funny and fair play to Ken for being such a good sport! :)
Is the first contestant on 'Popmaster' Ruth Jones? Hence the joke about her never having seen 'Gavin and Stacey' plus she wouldn't be offended by anything Rob Brydon said. I loved this show. Lynn Bowles does so well playing it straight with the travel links. Love the way Rob almost goes into Ronnie Corbett at times!
Ken shoulda got Terrys job ,his style is the nearest & he had a show ready made for early morning. It was a damn disgrace that Evans got it, like Steve wright ,he told radio 1, rightly or wrongly to f-0ff,sorry doesn't quite cover it in the real world.Luckily both are gone.
Similar but on reflection not close enough, best impersonator was Peter Serafinowicz of Terry Wogan. Rob needed a slightly deeper voice for Ken. Good on the BBC for allowing it through.
Maybe it's just because I'm scottish, but it's really quite obvious that it's not Ken lol. But I can see why those who aren't completely familiar with Scottish accents would fall for it
I was one of those who fell for it. I don't really listen to the radio, even if its on, so I don't really take in what im listening to but I defo sense something was off because of the odd things "Ken" said.
I'm Welsh and sometimes I can maybe hear him getting a sound or two wrong but if I was listening to this on a crackly FM radio in 2011 without actually knowing it was Rob, I'm pretty sure I would have just assumed it was Ken still recovering from the night before lol
