3/15/20 EDIT: Ok cool it took them all of a week, but now they posted a clickbait theory and are now profiting of of the [REDACTED] virus and the thousands of people who have died along with it... I guess they're back to thier old habits. 3/7/20 Alright, I no longer fully agree with some things I said in this video regarding GT. The Game Theorists crew has been doing so much to support the RU-vid Community as a whole nowadays, BUT IN MY DEFENSE that was NOT where the channel always was in terms of quality. This video was posted on the same day they made a video about measuring Luigi's genitals, so I thought their was no hope for the Game Theorist's channel to change into anything great at that point in time. I was wrong.
I first came to your channel via suggested to the right of a Game Theorists video. It was the "Why YOU, MatPat, and Markiplier died day 2" video. Of course, I almost immediately, just from the thumbnail, started getting a similar vibe alike one of MatPat's The Game Theorists videos. I thought, "Is this just a fan of Game Theory who decided to try his hand at a theory, a troll post, or something different that I might really enjoy watching and learn from?" I clicked on it, and the video presented to me was one that, while having said similar vibe, also showed me, from both the content and personality of the narrator of said content, that I wasn't watching simply a MatPat wannabee or a fan trying to make his own theory, nor was I watching a troll memelord trying his hand at a shitpost. I took a look at your channel and found multiple pieces of additional evidence that conveyed a clear distinction between The Game Theorists and Etra Games. One thing that both channels do is analyze video games. This can be seen explicitly in their channel descriptions. Etra Games' description currently as of April 15, 2018 is, "Game Developer/RU-vidr who *analyzes* video games to see WHY they work!" At the same time, the following part taken out of The Game Theorists channel description is, "Do you love *overanalyzing* video games?" From here it's easy to see both channels analyze video games, but there's much more to The Game Theorists channel description and it draws where the distinction between each channel starts. At the end of The Game Theorists' description, it states, "But hey, it's just a bunch of theories. Game Theories! Thanks for watching." The Game Theorists state that their videos aren't to be taken too seriously. That while their videos are considered analysis, the videos are not just analysis at the games themselves, but also of the concepts the games present their players with. Etra's description states that he will be analyzing the actual games themselves "to see WHY they work." Etra isn't trying to make videos theorizing about concepts or themes the games are presenting, he's analyzing the actual gameplay, and actually wants his videos to be taken more seriously as such. The personality difference between the channels further separates the two channels. While there have been multiple other personalities on The Game Theorists' channel, the main one has always remained MatPat. So considering that, and there being only one known voice for Etra Games, known as Etra, those are the two personalities to be used to illustrate this point. MatPat's personality is nerdy and adventurous, which fits his content. He's excited to share with his viewers the spoils of his adventures into overanalyzing the game or games, as well as all outside research he's done, he's featuring in this video. He's not afraid to be a bit humorous and entertaining while he informs us about a pixel measurement math formula to find out the rough actual size of something from a virtual world, or telling us about a historic event that most likely inspired a specific boss fight. MatPat's tone is much more informal, as if he's speaking directly to his viewers. Etra, on the other hand, speaks much more formally, refraining from speaking in the first person and from stating his own experiences, most of the time. Etra speaks at a slower pace and in a much more calm way. It makes his content easier to follow, because elements of game design are harder to follow, because not many before-college (elementary-high school) teach about elements of game design, which leaves anyone who hasn't educated themselves, went to college for it, or heavily taught themselves about elements of game design to be stuck feeling it hard to follow what Etra is saying if he'd said it too fast. Each personality of its channel works for its channel, each compliments the channel's content. The best example of how both channels can be similar, do a similar thing, but still display how their content and their personalities distinctly differ is in how they both handled predicting the future chapters of Bendy and the Ink Machine. (PSA this essay was brought to you by Etra's more recent Bendy Prediction video.) The specific videos are respectively The Game Theorists' video "Game Theory: How Bendy Will END! (Bendy and The Ink Machine)" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0xUucNrRm50.html and Etra Games' video "HOW to PREDICT the Gameplay of Chapter 4! : Bendy and the Ink Machine | Review of Design" ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-miDQ5H0Xv5E.html . From the titles, it's easy to tell that each of them made predictions about different things regarding Bendy and the Ink Machine, but it still stands that each channel made predictions about the game regarding events that have yet to come. In MatPat's video he goes through it pointing out aspects of lore and predicting the answers to the unknown characters true identities. He uses other lore aspects, gameplay elements, and outside resources as evidence to support his theories. Throughout the entire video however, MatPat barely speaks about what he thinks the actual gameplay of Bendy and the Ink Machine's future chapters are, only briefly mentioning it at the end of the video subtly behind his predictions for what will happen regarding the story. This is how MatPat's Game Theory videos usually work, they focus on lore aspects of a game first, and having the other two important main parts to his videos being the gameplay and whatever research he went into to figure out all the information for his theory video to exist. Etra doesn't focus on lore nearly as much, and when he does he usually doesn't go too into much detail, and that is by design, because his videos are all about game design. Etra briefly mentions character or story elements in this video, but only when said mentioning is done pertaining to a game design aspect. It shows how he's putting gameplay first before lore. Etra predicts the gameplay of Chapter 4 by taking a look at the structure of the previous chapters and seeing the order of events that the player experiences, from a gameplay perspective, and looking for a pattern. This prediction is the closest Etra has ever come to "theorizing" about a game, and it shows the line drawn between his content's focus and The Game Theorists content's focus. So restated in short, The Game Theorists content focuses on content about lore of games while also including gameplay, but Etra's content focuses on gameplay and only really acknowledging that the story exists. I wrote an essay. Don't ask me why. I just felt inspired to do so. Also, I ironically made an essay stating Etra's style of seriousness on a troll video made as a joke. That is true and Etra you are fine to show a more humorous side.
Jeremy Stinson Thanks for writing this! It really gave me proof that my strategy and goals are clear to a general audience, and that it is clear what differentiates me from competition. My goal with analyzing/ predicting gameplay patterns is not to compete with theorists like Matpat, but rather be a supplement to my “competitors”. Also with analyzing game design you really don’t have to know anything about the game or lore beforehand to take something away from the video, whereas trying to jump into a Game Theory FNAF video is near impossible without context. Yet I still appreciate and watch all sorts of narrative and lore analysis in gaming even if I don’t create it. Thanks again for the info and as always Thanks for Watching!
Etra Games You're very welcome! I think for most people the clarity of your goals and strategy are realized within the first video they watch of yours. You're definitely right about lore is conveniently not required knowledge to watch and understand a video about game design, and it's definitely a strength that your videos have because gameplay almost always comes before story regarding importance in a game. So people who are turned off or not interested in story elements, and especially people who follow the diehard disregard-the-story-only-gameplay-matters line of thinking, will actually find your content more appealing. Your videos have been a breath of fresh air for me. I've really enjoyed your content, and see a lot of potential! Thank you for creating it!

Gotta say, I am a really huge fan of game theory. Which is why I like your videos. So I think you should realize that almost all game theory videos actually make sense. Only a very select few don’t make sense, and I think your being unfair by representing MatPat as this crazy guy. I know it’s a joke, but I’m against it. What I think you should do is get more views and subscribers, then get the attention of Game theory and actually work with him. Take my advice or don’t, but just know Game theory is a lot better than it’s been portrayed
