Visordown takes a look at the bikes the Aprilia RS660 is planning on taking sales from in 2020.
It may not be a traditional super sports motorcycle, but is significantly more high spec than the bikes that inhabit he other end of the super sports segment.
Will it be enough to save the floundering super sports class? We really hope so!

I'm still surprised it took a manufacturer this long to figure out this formula. Everything else is either an asthmatic, mediocre, faired standard or a peaky, over powered track bike. This is what they should be making.

@@HormigaZ Bah only because the CBR650R is overpriced in the US market. The thorn in this side of the 660RS is going to be the dead reliable 130hp ZX6R you could have instead for like 1k less. In 600cc and around there are mainly two categories of bikes. 1st category is more racing and track oriented bikes such as; Suzuki GSX-R600 Honda CBR600RR Kawasaki ZX6R Yamaha R6 2nd category consists of more road and fun oriented bikes (you can still take them to the track if you want though) such as; Honda CBR650R Kawasaki Ninja 650 Suzuki SV650 (though not looking very sporty, closer to CB650R) I think RS 660 fits in the second category and will become one of the main rivals of CBR650R. RS 660 is a beautiful machine and full of cool techs that you can only find some high end 1000cc sport bikes. But there are three huge drawbacks imo; 1. Not 4 cylinder. So you can’t hear that classic deep and dark engine sound. I hope it’ll sound better than R3. 2. Yes it’s gonna be expensive. 3. Lacks world wide service and maintenance issues relative to huge brands like Honda, Suzuki etc.

Late reply but no, it's a track bike. This is not a 4cyl 600 bike, it's a supertwin bike. That category is 659cc maximum, twin cylinder. Its main competitors are the Paton S1-R and the Kawasaki Z650. A twin cyl track bike in the same race tier as a ZX6R would be the Ducati Panigale 899 as you are allowed to ride a twin cyl sub-900cc bike in the same race as a sub-600cc 4 cyl.

I get the feeling this video will be addressing the difference between the way the manufacturers are approaching the Middle Weight sector. Faired Nakeds/sport touring might look like a supersports but they aren't and in some ways that's a good thing others, it kinda leaves you wanting just a bit more. Then there's the supersports, fantastic fun when you get your head down but every day riding can be a bit of a pain in the proverbial. Aprilia have put another spanner in the works have found a balance that might suit more people who want more of the best of both worlds. I mean there is the price of the price but it's a European bike, that's to be expected I suppose. This might just be a game changer in that aspect.

Personally, I wasn’t all that confused with where the RS stood once it was announced. To me, it’s hard to find competitors because there aren’t any really, not yet at least. It’s sort of a new class of bike IMO, well, fills a particular niche. I lump BMW’s F900r in here as well, which I have. This sort of bike is down on power compared to supersports but when compared to middleweight bikes people would actually enjoy around town and in the twisties, it’s a huge step up from those as far as tech and components included. I came from a Ninja650 as my first bike and thoroughly enjoyed it as an all around, good enough for most sort of bike. Looked sporty but comfortable to commute on and fun enough for the weekend. The BMW however was a nice upgrade for me because it still served that use but provided Brembo brakes, more fine tuned suspension, and tech aids only matched by top end bikes. I don’t need top bike power, but I wanted top end tech and convenience. That’s how I see these latest crop of Aprilias. I’m hoping this spurs new bikes in a similar ilk from other manufacturers now 😁

My thoughts exactly. I understand why the RS660 is more expensive because of its electronics (let’s face it, the brand name as well). But 12-14.000 € (in my country) is a lot for a “650-ish” class, if it was more around 10k, I’d consider the RS660 a lot more. I’d rather go with the CBR650R with an optional factory quickshifter and an aftermarket exhaust system, which will still be cheaper than the Aprilia. Plus, I’m a sucker for the sounds of an in line 4.

It is an intriguing design package. And it's pretty safe to assume it will be an absolute blast to ride in the twisties! I reckon Aprilia's range of RSV4-powered bikes could use a third model, similar in design concept to the RS660, with a more street-focused aim.

This comment shows you have no Idea what you are talking about. First of you don't need half the electronics packed on this bike especially with 100hp. The big 4 bikes will stay ahead of this on the track without all the wizardry. There is also the layer of reliability that Aprilia doesn't have and even with a cheaper to produce parallel compared to Inline 4s the price is still as close as the 600s.

Well no problem besides the fact the clutch lever broke and I needed to push him at lights. Meanwhile, my last trip to a specialized dealer (you can't even go to an aprillia dealer in america) i slipped on a puddle of coolant, leaking out of a 0 miles rsv41100s water pump. Still have the pics too. And thats when its new, can't wait to see what happens when the highly questionable aprillia warranty runs out. You'll be stuck with a 12,000 dollar slow 600 that needs 2500 dollars in work when any Japanese manufacturer would probably charge half of that for a whole new engine, and probably work with you if you're the original buyer of the bike even if its off warranty, aprillia meanwhile will try and screw you out of your entitlement in the warranty

Aprilia is aiming for white space between the entry level and the super sport middle-weights mentioned in the video, but also trying to hit white space around some more expensive bikes that were also aiming at customers who wanted a little more comfort with their sport bike (Ducati Supersport and Kawasaki Ninja 1000). Those bikes push somewhat into the sport-touring category, but many people won't use them that way, but as a sporty bike that doesn't kill your joints. Aprilia seems to be aiming between the CBR650R (close-ish power but much less sophisticated suspension and electronics) and the Ducati Supersport (more powerful, but similar levels of electronic goodies and chassis componentry). Here is the US, the RS660 also splits right down the middle in price. It is nice to see manufacturers coloring outside the lines. I haven't seen them coloring into territory that will get my butt on the seat of something, but that's a whole other discussion in a completely different category of motorcycle. Perhaps the upcoming Toureg will oblige, but I think it will be a nicer, Italian Tenere...which isn't bad, just not exactly what I am looking for.

Aprilia will hit the jackpot with this model because of that and the amount of people interested in RS 660 and 660 Tuono shows that. There's just nothing like it on the market right now. A bit of a left field rival. The Triumph Street Triple RS. quite a bit of tech. very similar price. Shove some clip ons a Street Triple, I'm sure someone makes a "daytona fairing" and they wouldn't be a mile apart. (yes Triumph should do this, but they reckon they will not sell). However doing that to a Street Triple will shove the price up more. As I understand it the Aprilia is a bit more "road focused" than say the Zx-6R , R6, that does put it more in line with a Street Triple, except with the fairing and clips ons included. Do you need more than 100 BHP for the road , probably "no" , although that does depend how the 100 BHP is delivered. At different extremes of the spectrum , the BMW R18 1800cc huge cruiser "only" develops mid 90 BHP but has masses of torque, a Honda CBR650R develops 94 BHP, but you really have to rev it. For road use where you might not want to have to make the engine scream , a nice big thick torque band from low revs is really nice. For mainly this reason, I've got a Speed Triple , not really for it's peak 148 BHP ( Don't think I've used that ), but for all the low down grunt. I'm probably using a real lot less than 100 BHP all the time.
