Hi Gary, Some juxtaposition in Sydney Australia full comprehensive insurance for a 43 yr old male with zero claims history will be around $1200 a year. Registration costs $600-700 a year depending on your post code. We pay through the nose down here for anything exciting with a bit of horsepower, Thanks for taking the time to run though your ownership experience.

I had every intention of getting a 17' Tuono. The dealer here in Ohio had a bunch of Aprilia's they had to get rid of as the 18's were coming in. They had the Tuono factories priced at about $15000 and the RSV4 RF's at $18000. By the time I decided to pull the trigger the Tuono's were gone. So I ended up getting the RSV4 instead. I love the bike, but to this day I still sometimes wish I had the Tuono. Especially when I decide to just take off for a 3 or 400 mile ride. Just can't help but think the Tuono would be a lot more comfortable. I'm 49 yrs old and my body tends to cramp up a little easier than it used to. I also did an aftermarket (Zero Gravity) double bubble wind screen on mine. But found out under normal riding (not tucked) all it does is direct the wind and bugs directly at my face shield in stead of my chest. Real bear keeping my helmet clean. Great vid!

luvs2race370 thanks for the comment....yeah getting old can be difficult! I rode the RSV4, loved it....but the ergonomics and gearing make (for me) the Tuono the better choice. Ride safe out there!

Great summary sir, well done! I can't decide between MT10 and V4 1100 RR. The only concern I have regarding Tuono is reliability. So far I haven't found any horror stories. Still undecided thought. Head says MT10, but heart says Tuono :D

Wow! What a great in-depth review Garey! Great work sir. I’ve taken some ‘inspiration’ from your mod list for myself and can confirm the SP Connect phone mount is superb, although I’ve noticed that the phone case mounting mechanism is getting a bit chewed up due to me clumsily applying the phone to the mount without it being seated correctly... operator error... I’d love to hear your more in-depth thoughts on the Akrapovic exhaust and race map. It’s an expensive upgrade and I’ve no doubt it’s worth every penny, I’m interested to hear about the temperature decrease, that was news to me that it did this. Summers in New Zealand can get pretty hot and I’m concerned about the bike overheating in urban environments... so this mod might have leap frogged up my Wishlist... haha.. Anyway, keep up the good work, love your videos.
@GareyCooperdude
@GareyCooperdude 6 лет назад
Of course how am I going to disagree with your opinion on the video here?! Thanks for the nice thoughts David. Actually I did miss a few things in the comparison of the Factory vs. the RR...which I hope folks will forgive me for. On the SP mount, yes it is a plastic/rubber sort of combination and I could see it's possible to chew it up if you are little to likely to have "all thumbs"...:>). I myself will now and then pull it off with the attachment on the phone case pulled out of alignment. I solve this with a screwdriver and some patience. But I am still much happier with this mount, it is very secure and allows you to see the phone with no obstructions. So, I remain sold on it as a mount. On the Akra, yes I do intend to cover that on a future VLOG. So time permitting I will return to it. My feeling is that it does lower the standard temps on the bike which in my opinion tend to run a little high. Like NZ we have some hot summers in San Diego, right now it's about 90 degrees F here. So any little bit can help. As noted when I first purchased the Tuono the temp cut off function caught me out a couple of times. This DID improve after the factory standard re-flash BEFORE I installed the Akra. It was explained to me by the dealership that the "race reflash" on the ECU and the elimination of the "flapper valve" both combine to reduce temperatures. Also if you look at the bike before/after the Akra install you will note that there is much more free airspace with the elimination of the bulkier stock unit. Which provides most benefit? Hard to say....but it SEEMS to be so far. Anyhow thanks for the comments Dude, and ride safe!

Garry - As ever an entertaining production that must have taken considerable time to create. I think a follow up on riding impressions in city, suburban and freeway scenarios on a one day ride would be enlightening. This feature would also introduce the SoCal scenery to us Europeans. I ride a MY 2017 in London and it's quite simply the best machine I've ever had. One correction to your narrative: the brakes on both machines are identical.
@GareyCooperdude

Thanks for the comment, and yes the brakes are identical! So you are spot on correct sir. @kam1996

You missed the biggest reason to pay more for a Factory. The Ohlins trifecta. Ohlin forks, ohline shock and steering damper. That is why any serious rider pays for the factory. Period.
@GareyCooperdude
@GareyCooperdude 6 лет назад
Well okay then Kam 1996! I guess I may not be all that serious because also factors for me personally were the graphics, and the 200 section rear wheel. The Ohlins certainly didn't hurt in my decision on which to go with but they weren't the ONLY consideration(s) on MY own part......but I do respect that at the edge of performance there is probably a slight edge to the suspension/steering damper with the Ohlins.....thanks for the comment.
@kam1996
@kam1996 6 лет назад
Garey Cooper, well I didn’t mean to insinuate that you are not serious. I was merely pointing out that the biggest reason to shell out more than $2500 for a Factory over the RR version is the ohlins. Everything else is the same and from what I gather, M50s are standard on the RR as well. I could be wrong
@GareyCooperdude
@GareyCooperdude 6 лет назад
Sorry! Just having fun with it here......sincerely your are spot on as the Ohlins would be single most expensive add to the standard costing for the Tuono! AND you are also correct in that both machines have the M50 Brembo brakes. As we say; "you ain't wrong"! Pardon me for being a little to flippant on my response to you.

@@tuyenhoang5546 depending on your riding skills I do notice a very big difference between the Sachs and the öhlins (about 2 seconds on a 5 km long racetrack) Furthermore the öhlins gives you a bit more comfort on the road since it is more sensitive
@chrisvodka2412
@chrisvodka2412 6 лет назад
Hello Garey, i may correct you: The difference between the RR and Factory are not the brakes, they have both the Brembo M50 Monoblocs. Actuallly the diff are: Factory: Suspension: Öhlins Back tire dimension 200 Tail single seat Colors RR: Suspension: Sachs Back tire dimension 190 Color and backseat In fact, the biggest and most important diff. are the suspensions. Nobody needs Oehlins on street but only on track and only really good riders. Factory is more for ego then performance for most ppl - nevetheless i'd like to have one as well :-)
@GareyCooperdude
@GareyCooperdude 6 лет назад
Thanks for pointing these out Chris. Yes, I should have done some more fine research here on the differences. My test ride was actually on the RR which was enough to convince me that the Tuono of any type was an excellent machine!
@samiam5697
@samiam5697 6 лет назад
I have the 2017 RR, Garey. You missed the biggest thing between the RR and the Factory! The Factory has the Ohlins shocks! The RR comes with Sachs. This, by far, is the biggest difference and the reason for the higher price on the Factory model. Both have the same everything else, including the Brembo M50's. Another price difference is the wheels. You get much nicer (and lighter) wheels.
@GareyCooperdude
@GareyCooperdude 6 лет назад
Thanks for pointing that out! This is one of the main differences......also the tail aero piece and the wheels. I should have done some better research here! I WILL say that for all practical purposes the RR is still a very fine machine and one would not be wrong or disappointed to ride one and pocket the difference in $'s!

Great video Garey! I also have a 2014 BMW S1000R, but the new Tuono factory is just too good to pass. The thing is if I only want to have one naked bike, which one would you prefer? I have one track day bike already, and I'm really into road trips. I live in north Illinois, so heated grips is something I can't live without in winter now. Hope you can give me some advice. Thank you!
@GareyCooperdude
@GareyCooperdude 6 лет назад
Great and difficult to answer question Boyang! Most people remark that the Aprilia is potentially less reliable than the BMW. This has not been my personal experience however as both machines have been rather reliable for me. For sure in my opinion the Tuono is the more "fun" of the two machines. However the difference between the two is minimal, the Beemer is also very enjoyable to ride.... The Tuono does not have heated grips, it does have cruise control. So if the heated grips are truly a must for you then you'd either have to add on a set of after market heaters or buy heavier gloves! One thing I've said is that to consider where the nearest Aprilia dealer is located to you. Should any thing happen or if service should be required this can be a factor, there are simply many more BMW dealers typically. For long road trips they are both quite similar. Although they are upright nakeds they have rather aggressive riding positions. So in my case at my advanced age there is no way I can spend the time in the saddle that my friends who ride "cruisers" can. I can do about 3 hours and then I need to stretch a bit, if not put fuel into them! So for me in SoCal and rather close rides around my area, it's the Tuono......but not by a BIG difference. One thing to consider Boyang is that the rumor mill has it that the BMW S1000r is due for a pretty big upgrade in for the '19 year........OR the RR will be upgraded in '19 and the single "R" gets the upgrade in '20. Hope this helps sir!
@boyangchen5586
@boyangchen5586 6 лет назад
I didn't expect you to reply this much and they're very elaborate! Every time something new and shiny comes out, I'll think about trading in my S1000R. However, every time I consider all the factors, I still keep my BMW around. Thank you, Garey, for telling me all of this!

you seem in the same boat as me. i was trying to decide between the super duke, tuono, and 1000r. i saw a video on here from about aprilla horrendous dealer/manufacturer support and immediately crossed the tuono off the list. waiting months for a part and the part comes in and its wrong and waiting months more. a fricken nightmare. after learning about that won't go near an aprilla. that's bullshit. i have decided on 1000r. i know the tendency to stretch the neck and look at the yard next door, but after all the research i don't think you can do better than what you got.

Awesome video and bike! Do you do track days on this? I'm cross shopping the low mileage Tuono's and Kawasaki z900. I think the z900 will give me 85% of what I want out of a bike and can buy it new for $10K or so. Definitely not in the same league as the Tuono though. The 2017 Tuono looks the best with that green trim on the tail.
@GareyCooperdude
@GareyCooperdude 5 лет назад
Ross, no trackways for me, they are unfortunately behind me at this stage of my life. But I do love this machine and the "near to track" experience I can get from using it around our San Diego twists and turns. Can't argue against the Kawi! They are reliable and maintenance easy no doubt. And new is always good of course. The Tuono has the undoubtable emotional appeal with the V4, the sound, and the styling/design. But, there is a price and there is nothing cheap about the ownership, including little details like insurance. I had a green (what else) Kawasaki Ninja 650 that was an absolute easy to ride and maintain machine. I'll never bad talk the asian machines! But, ride the Aprilia and if you can go the $'s you'll see the difference and make the decision that's right for you! Good luck with it! P.S. in general most Tuono's are lower mileage because the owners are like me...older dudes that use them for mainly pleasure riding. If I was considering one I'd ask if the owner if he would allow you to ask the local dealership where it's been maintained to either examine it or give you a verbal feedback on what the history of the machine has been.

Can you provide the link to the exhaust you ordered? Is it a full system or just carbon slip on? And you meant the race tune came free with it or did you purchase the race ecu separately and how much did the entire exhaust setup cost you?
@GareyCooperdude
@GareyCooperdude 5 лет назад
Hello Prashant, it is the carbon "slip on". However it does replace the flapper valve in the exhaust system. It does leave the main under belly piece in place. I purchased this from my local dealer. The Akrapovic pamphlet that came with my system describes it as Part Number #254353. I believe that if you have a local Aprilia dealer they should have this part number. I hope this helps! Hey, Garey, I understand you can buy a race eCU (new box) or a race remap of the stock ECU? Can you explain? Cheers!
@GareyCooperdude
@GareyCooperdude 6 лет назад
Yes, you can do either of those two things to change the mapping in your ECU. In my case the map was downloaded at the dealership, to the existing ECU. Based upon my current knowledge which is not "expert" class, my understanding is that if you are going to do the install yourself of an aftermarket exhaust it is easiest to purchase the "race" ECU and install that into your machine at the same time. If you are having a dealership do this, as I did, they have the facility and knowledge to connect your motorcycle to the network, and download the "race" program to your existing ECU. Without installing a physically different ECU box. To my admittedly limited knowledge there is no difference in the mapping with these two update options. Typically an ECU swap out requires one to return your OEM existing ECU box. It is thereafter presumably used for other customers after being electronically updated at the facility. The ultimate of course would be to take your motorcycle to a facility that has the ability to monitor your machine under power on a dyno. Then, mapping could be adjusted for your specific machine.....I would love to try this but I don't know of a company that does this in my area of Southern California. I hope this helps Constantine!

Another great video! Since we last talked I also put the Puig screen on and its great (wish I could send you a pic!) . I wanted to add the Akra exhaust but the dealer tells me that removing the flapper valve is not a good idea as you have problems at slow speeds in town...also it is not street legal (in UK) . I think they want to sell me the Akra slip on with the flapper valve, but that costs nearly 3,000! Any thoughts on this?
@GareyCooperdude
@GareyCooperdude 6 лет назад
Thanks for the comment and glad to hear the PUIG went well for you. Love to see a pic......I must say my experience with the flapper valve removed is that it is smoother actually when it is removed.....? So not sure what the dealer means? The flapper valve is in the exhaust and it opens and closes driven by a servo motor with cables. The design is that it opens at a certain RPM. My understanding about this (could be very wrong here) is that this was a noise abatement issue. This to meet Euro rules. Maybe others can comment? So to me to pay $3K or same in pounds for an Akra that retains the flapper valve comes near to defeating the whole purpose, which to my mind is threefold; Improve sound, reduce weight, and improve performance......so I'm not sure I'd make that investment with retaining the flapper. Modifying the exhaust system is also not legal in most US states. However as we have no yearly MOT for motorcycles in California there is not much to worry about. Also, keeping the dB killer installed (as I've done) keeps the absolute noise emission down to "more or less" acceptable levels. So it is unlikely that I will draw the attention of the traffic police for outright noise pollution. I'd consider contacting others within the Tuono community where you live and see if they can comment with local knowledge....... Hope this helps dude! Ride safe and enjoy.

Chris Vodka They should be going for the Harley riders with their shotgun pipes and leave sports bikes alone. Sports bikes are nowhere near as loud.

Did you modify the grips? They do not look stock

Hello M4x0x; the grips are not really modified per se. I have installed a pair of "Grip Puppy" grip covers. These are made from neoprene and are larger diameter with a soft and spongy type of feel. I find them rather comfortable for my own use. These are inexpensive and available from Amazon, for instance. And I have seen them at motorcycle dealers as well. Prices are around $13.00 to $18.00 USD...sorry I didn't mention these in the video!

That's one of the reasons I chose to go with the '21 Tuono. The electric suspension and of course the updated instrument panel. Thanks for the comment!

I've owned Aprilias since 2003. I got my 2003 Tuono fresh out of the crate and has nearly 40k miles on it though I know of a few well over 100k. The old Rotax motors are near bullet proof. I bought a used 2012 Tuono V4 a year ago, but it's an early V4 so it only has a 3.6 gallon gas tank, lucky to get 100 miles before the fuel light comes on. 4.8gal on the 03. I have to say that the fit and finish is better on the 03, Aprilia cheaped out a bit on the 12, not sure how good the current bikes are. But not much compares to a V4, amazing sound and power. And AF1 (One) Racing is a great resource. Good part selection and they run apriliaforum.com A very knowledgeable crowd on there, been a member since 03. I like that Piaggio power connector, do you have the P/N for it? Save me trying to snake a power cable up from the battery. Rizoma has alot of beautiful parts for Aprilias, I have a very nice set of front turn signals from Rizoma (rear are integrated into the taillight). But Rizoma parts can be pricey.

Brent Bartley sorry, just seeing this! Give me a couple days to get back to you with the part numbers.... I did do a video on the installation. Thanks for commenting.

Is there a gas gauge on these bikes ?
@GareyCooperdude
@GareyCooperdude 4 года назад
Michael Molinelli no, there is not. This is a glaring omission in my opinion on a machine of this quality built in 2017.

Rob Defire could catch, yes I do have the “grip puppy” covers. Should have mentioned them but forgot to do so.

I guess you meant to title this "Accessories" not "Mods" ?? I don't think you can really call something you simply bolt,, a modification ;)
@GareyCooperdude
@GareyCooperdude 4 года назад
Hmm, not entirely sure of that. You are of course entitled to your own opinion. But, let's say that a windshield is a bolt-on, and on the Tuono NOT simple....so Mod or Accessory? Same with power take off, more or less a "bolt on" (some cutting of the fascia required), but Mod or Accessory? You can call it as you like. On many of the web sites they ARE called accessories when you buy them...so your call. I like "mod" easier to spell and type and it seems to be in wider usage...rightly or wrongly. Thanks for the comment.
