600 mile range for me too. Wasn't a fan of the motor change but then I remembered that I'm a fabricator and like to experiment. Having the single motor setup will just make it easier for guys like me to swap in other power trains for expeirmental reasons now that we have an axle setup. Would love to see the fuel economy this chassis will have with a small diesel under the hood and a fuel tank put in place of the heavy battery pack.

@@fanfare100 I would guess a very traction limited 6 second 0 - 60. Sticky tires on a good prepped surface should be closer to low 5 seconds, maybe even dip into the 4 second range? The low weight really helps along with the no shift transmission and great power curve of an EV motor.

@JoeBManco
@JoeBManco Месяц назад
Do you have some other FWD three wheel vehicle you drive with snow tires? The middle wheel has to cut its own path in snow and heavy rain. Real cars don't have this issue because for the most part, except for turning, the rear wheels are always in the same path as the front wheels.
@ronfarnsworth7074
@ronfarnsworth7074 Месяц назад
@@JoeBMancoTrue, but rarely an issue I think. New England winters are generally more wet than snowy nowadays. These states use a lot of chemicals and have a lot of snowplows. I rarely drive in 2 ruts in central New England though it can happen. Your point is valid, rear wheel tracking even with snows may vary, but that's winter driving in general anyway even in my awd. Even a Jeep will squirm around on snow just from it's own traction control. I plan on a studded snows and think a fwd Aptera will be way better than most of the cars I grew up with.

I suggested they put in the electrical power cord, the coolant line and any data lines going to the back wheel with protected connectors at the end and ship with an unpowered rear wheel but by having everything there they can ship an in-wheel motor for the third wheel at a much slower rate. This would also help Elaphe advance their production processes and get to in-hub motors quickly while still getting the people who want 3 wheel to get there eventually with not too much excessive cost.
@Carl_in_AZ
@Carl_in_AZ Месяц назад
🔌🔌How about a 2000-watt rear freewheel hub motor from Charge Bike that does not need cooling and would only be used for highway cruising? It also offers selective regenerative braking, which no other hub motor offers. You could then tow Aptera from the front wheels. 🔌🔌

Adds weight and cost. I'll stick with the two wheels like I have for 13 years with my Leaf.
@Carl_in_AZ
@Carl_in_AZ Месяц назад
@@madmotorcyclist Based on last year's Canada Fully Charge show, it would add about 24 lbs to the Aptera. Honda already uses similar rear-wheel approaches on its hybrid, CRV, Fit, Accord, and Insite. This rear motor should increase the Aptera's range once the vehicle goes above 50 mph without adding a larger battery. Like an idle jet engine, the front wheels would still spin using nearly zero power. The rear motor would use less energy because of Aptera's low CF and no need to overcome inertia. The cost would be around $250 OEM.

I would have preferred in wheel motors and would have liked to hear more details about how the switch happened which the podcast was supposed to provide, but didn't. Perhaps they had the in board motor in mind as possibilty all along as contingency plan in case ideal drivetrain of in wheel motors fell through, but very little details about that possibly having been the case has been shared which I find to be annoying after hearing so much for so long about in wheel motors being so awesome. I hear you though, William about it being a good thing for them to bring out the vehicle sooner than later, especially with so many people being impatient for the vehicle. I also suppose that the vehicle, regardless of drivetrain, is unique enough

It is a good move, a simplification that will save them a lot of time and maintenance and support issues. Rear wheel can still have in-wheel motor. I'm only disappointed that it's not EMR4 which was supposed to weight less with the same torque and cost less to produce (as advertised by vitesco). But seems vitesco has a surplus of EMR3s available without waiting and with a nice discount for Aptera. We will see how it goes.

Obviously Elaphe's hub motor (for Aptera) is not production ready. Why? The insufficient cooling of the Elaphe motors was a show stopper last year. The inboard motor requires a redesign, can result in a more comfortable ride with respect to the Aptera with hub motors. Elaphe has work to do.

I would prefer the in wheel motors. As an investor and being in line for the launch addition… I’m a bit disappointed. I was hyped for Elaphe motors and the significant higher torque they provide. No way will the new motor be as exciting or “fast”. So the Aptera will be quick because it’s weight, not thrilling. I am now on the fence to see what the actual performance will be. When we get some real world validation, I will decide to stay or drop out of line or wait for AWD or just buy something else to commute in.

Its a standard electrical motor they buy over the shelf from Continental. Like any other part to bang together their motorcycle. This was already a bad decicion when Sono Motors chose Continental as motor deliverer. In a time when Continental wants to get rid of anything but the tyre business. Because they are losing money on all other activities. Including motor production. The Aptera guys are real genius.

I will believe in Aptera as soon as they make a real customer product. After watching some of the older videos, they said customer production would happen at the end of 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, and now the new projection is the first quarter of 2025. But then they say in the Friday's podcast that it will take months to tune the Vitesco motor. I stopped wanting this vehicle months ago when it was obvious they was lying about the hub motors. Sandy Munro said Elaphe would not be in the launch edition in August 2023. Chris M lied about it. They could have said they are looking at all options and will make an announcement at the appropriate time. Also, while Steve F was talking during the podcast he tied Aptera 2.0 to Aptera 1.0. From now on I will do the same. It has been 18 years and no customer vehicles have been made.
