Could you please do the reactions of aromatic compounds that have already got one or more groups substituted in? For example, 4-nitromethylbenzene with chlorine in presence of anhydrous aluminium chloride? And how that differs with 4-nitromethylbenzene with chlorine in presence of light? How would you approach such questions, especially seeing as we have an electron-donating and electron-withdrawing group together (What takes priority etc)? Would most appreciate this!!
Assuming you still don't know, let me give you the basic reactions and definitons that go into basic detail yet have an example for each reaction Substitution reactions involves swapping i.e subbing in one element for another during a mechanism. So if you have CH3Cl, if I use a OH- reagent, the Chloromethyl undergoes a substitution reaction in which the OH Swaps with the CL, resulting in CH3OH An addition reaction is the addition of another element or elements to the compound, for example. With electrophilic addition, C2H4 has a double bond, if I use a HBr reagent, after the mechanism has finished, Hydrogen and Bromine from the HBr is "Added" into the compound due to the double reacting... This results in C2H5Br in electrophilic substitution, the nature of both reactions occur in one mechanism that's why both of the words are used in the phrase, hope that helps, if not watch more of Erintou's videos or i recommend also going on other chemistry videos regarding mechanisms and reaction such as allery chemistry- or as Erintoul has mentioned, go on his "god send" website, great resources over there
