Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is the sequel to the billion dollar earning Aquaman. It is directed by James Wan and stars Jason Momoa, Nicole Kidman, Temura Morrison and Amber Heard. Thank you for this video and your energy, Kristian! I honestly thought the trailer was visually/emotionally flat and exhausting. I also left wondering if we just watched the entire plot of the film play out in an abridged version. I didn't think this was as bad as the film community was speculating, but I can see how this could struggle at the box office even with some of the competition moving to 2024. In the end I finished the trailer asking the following questions: What sets this apart from the first first film? Yes, it's in IMAX aspect ratio, but is it actually filmed in IMAX? Seemingly not, and if so, I don't thinks it's potential was shown here because to me it's rather visually inert (not that a lot isn't happening, it's just that none of it has a "visionary/cinematic verisimilitude" feel to it, at least in my estimation of the visual grammar on display). Similarly, is James Wan's signature style visible in this trailer to get me excited for a new James Wan film? Seemingly not enough for my taste (the CGI this time looked less visually interested and less detailed in its composition, even compared to the first film that released a half decade ago). Does the characters and plot draw me in? Not yet. Lastly, I totally agree that the first thing I thought of is Jason Mamoa's performance in Fast X, which seems to be the exact same character traits used here, just in "hero mode" this time around. All in all...I'm more curious, than excited. Bit of a downer perspective, but I hope I change my tune on the piece this winter! Thanks again Kristian!

You are definitely not alone, this looks like alot of fun. The first movie also had some of the same things said at first site of the trailer but people really enjoyed it plus it grossed a sick amount. Being that it's still James Wan, I think it will be more of the same but bigger. While that's not a bad thing, I dont see it reaching the billion mark again.

My thoughts are that we can’t necessarily expect every single superhero film to be dramatically different from others. The biggest thing that they need is that within the familiar tropes that are evident, they need to have characters that are well written and interesting and have small intimate moments between the characters that matter in terms of their own personal growth and the emotional connection between not only them but to us as the audience and showing us why these smaller moments matter as it all feeds into what we expect from the big superhero climatic battles that happen by the end

I had a lot of fun with the first movie. I look forward to seeing more of the dynamic between Arthur and Orm. And more Black Manta is pretty great too. I personally don't need every superhero/comic book movie to break the mold or do something different every single time. Sometimes I just want a cool story with a particular character and the world around that character. That's what this feels like for me

Can't agree with you more. How is this the same? This is a revenge movie. Aquaman is a flawed hero who could have saved Black Manta's father, but CHOOSE to let him die. I rooting a little for Black Manta. Aquaman 2 - LET'S GOOOOO!

I thought the trailer looked great. Sure, the story looks kind of generic but I'm not expecting an Aquaman sequel to reinvent the wheel in the genre. I just want a good time with some great action sequences and spectacular visuals like the first one gave us. I really liked the first movie and if this one is just as good I'll be happy.

Maybe I'm in the minority on that one, but I really liked the trailer to be honest. Even if I know that Amber Turd will be in the movie, I'm happy that they cut her out of this trailer apart from one quick shot haha I agree that many superhero movies now are the same, but compared to many (especially from Disney), this one seems to have heart, the humor seems good, not forced (the natural charisma of Jason Momoa helps it a great deal), not overpowering the drama scenes the movie will have. Only judging from this trailer, he still looks like a badass, seems to have fun with the role and there's no indication of that he's not gonna be front and center (because that's one big issue I have with Disney properties, I'll leave it at that). To me it looks like a great time at the theaters

I totally agree with you in this one. It just doesn't motivates me. It seems like they are trying to make it look as if the stakes are super high when they should have made it look as it if was more personal, like, show Arthur's growth (specially if he has a baby now!) show him learning to fall in love with Atlantis, show his personal journey instead of trying to make it seem as if the world is ending again. Also, I REAAALLLYYYYY don't care about Mantis as a villain 🤷🏻‍♂️

At this point I just don't care to be honest. Less is more. I still remember Iron man one being great and the action set pieces were simple and cool, like when the tank shell hits him and he simply fires and forgets. This is probably 3 hours long and by the time you come out you'll just be numb remembering nothing specific.

Great reaction Kristian! WB's DC is making the same mistake they made with the Flash movie, WB did not recast Mr. Miller, they did not connect Gunn's DCU in any shape or form, dumb confusing ending why? Aquaman 2 needed to recast Amber Heard, the damage was done from the trail and the end of lt. That is poor business sense again. just like the Flash movie there is no good reason to watch it A2? Well it does not connect to the DCU, there's no relevance to this movie due to no one really knows where it stands.

I agree with you that most superhero movies today look the same, have a similar feel. But what is the solution? If we have seen everything a superhero movie can offer, where does the genre go? Darker? Into The Batman or Joker territory? That didn't work out so well for Man of Steel or BvS.

@@TheKristianHarloff Quite a few this year had the emotional beats, the family beats. Shazam 2, The Flash, Blue Beetle, Quantumania. Maybe those beats need to be done better or we need a jump in quality of the superhero part. If we are looking towards Guardians (which sounds like a good idea to me), DC is in good hands with Gunn.

I have a little push back on what you considered a superhero movie that's the same as others in the past. Aquaman is a different hero. He let Black Manta's father die. I can't think of another hero that would do that - Superman wouldn't. Batman wouldn't. Wonder Woman might. This is a revenge flick and I'm all for it. I'm rooting for Black Manta 🤣🤣

(Comic book lover here) When people say this stuff looks generic, then mean the story beats themselves, not every single detail. Being real it's an issue with the comics too. An event comes out, has a few standout things, but overall we know almost exactly how it's gunna play out and are largely correct. But you're right though: Aquaman is a different hero. The bulk of these characters have actual things (beyond surface level stuff) that make them different that the studios haven't capitalized on as much in recent for the sake of spectacle

A slight side track but still in the realm of DC; could you consider creating a tribute to the late and amazing Kevin Conroy? He passed away last year, and was the sole reason I got into acting. I have a voice acting background and there are some preconceived notions that it's not as demanding as regular acting; but the vocal training itself and perfecting the craft may take more time than any acting school. l feel like he's underrated as Batman (ditto Mark Hamill as Joker) and even non existent in the conversation. PS. You almost saw me as Leon in those new Resident Evil games :)

My best guess regarding this movie is that it will be great with the action and a lot of the visuals but where the movie faulters is on the writing, dialogue and the parts where people are talking together. I'm sure some CGI will not look good, but idk it seems like a guilty pleasure looking movie at first glance. Might just put the movie on in the background while you do something.

Yes, King Atlan is played by the same actor who plays Garp in One Piece, Vincent Regan. At first I thought you were wrong because Graham McTavish played him in the first movie. They do look exactly alike.

Thanks for covering this; I absolutely get your points. The spectacle and visuals look like they should be experienced on a big screen. but what else is there? They need someone like Nolan or Denis to break the wheel again...everything in most comic book movies after 2019 feels like something the algorithm is telling us to like/enjoy.

I understand the point about wanting something different, but I don't think Aquaman really looks like any other superhero movie. Wan's Atlantis has its own look and style. And you certainly can't say that the trailer doesn't keep in line with the look and feel of the first movie. From what I have read, this is a bromance movie in the way the first film was a romance movie. Which I am down with. Now only time will tell if the film is going to be bad as rumors have suggested, or it springs a surprise. I enjoyed the first Aquaman. It was like an Indiana Jones adventure in the Ocean. And it embraced the craziness of the world with the Sharks and the Sea Horses and Kraken.

I was watching “Runaway Train” with Jon Voight the other day with that incredible emotional ending and for myself that’s what’s missing with some movies like aquaman, theres alot of stuff on the screen without ít bringing out any emotion in me, whether it’s excitement or sadness or happiness, laughs , something anything! Just kind of forgettable, need better writing and scripts and go from there, I’m hoping for the best, thanks K!

It'll probably do well because it's pure escapism. The color grading is easy on the eyes and it does look busy but not bland. Probably a generic story, but so is Avatar. It has the Christmas window too so I would be surprised if it didn't make more than 500M.

What's weird to me about this version of Aquaman is that he doesn't look like the version I grew up with in the comics or the Super Friends animated Saturday morning show. I love Jason Momoa as an actor, from Stargate: Atlantis to Game of Thrones, etc., but he never seemed like someone who should have been cast in this role. In fact, Patrick Wilson, who plays his brother, actually does resemble the Aquaman from my childhood, and every time I see them on screen together, it bugs me because I feel like their roles should've been switched. I'm looking forward to the movie, but I'm more looking forward to seeing Momoa take on a different character role, like Lobo. Something that would fit more with his look/personality, than Arthur Curry/Aquaman.

I think the superhero genre in order to survive will need to go small again. Less expensive budgets and a lil more intimate and fit the Marvel folk. We need to let go a bit of the connectivity. It’s ok if a lot of the movies are standalones.

Here's the big thing (Huh, Huh! Plug!). "Same old same old"? You can say that about every genra film - Westerns, Sci-Fi, Comic Book, Comedy, Rom-Com,Thriller, Horror film. Every one of them follows the same formula(s). It's just that stories and characters need to be relatable to a large crowd to be a huge hit! There were sooooooooo many Westerns made, but there are only a few that really stand out. There have been soooooooo many thrillers made, but only a few stand out. When I tried to look up comic book films, I ran into the problem that the lists included everything that was made into ma comic - from a movie, and that messed up the stats a lot! When it came down to it, I came up with 126 movies that came from comic books - and that included all of the old time sereals, as well as some movies that were made, but never released. And considering how much money mey make ranges wildly from under 100, 000 to ove 2 Billion, it's really hard to make a realistic average for box office sales - But I think that the comic films have a pretty darn good record of making money. Dude, we just had Gotg 3, the flash and spiderverse this year, they were all awsome. I am still completely hooked with the Comicbook movies.

I find it interesting how most youtubers or youtube channels only react to big budget movie trailers like comic book movies or star wars movies... most don't react to the other movies out there which I think is disrespectful and kinda classless... they do it because they don't think its gonna get them enough clicks and likes and also and they'll never admit it out loud but they don't feel like these other movie trailers are worth their time or they don't care as much about them as they do the big studio films... all movies and all movie trailers should be celebrated and at least giving the respect of being viewed... its sad what the youtube film community has become... I hear so many youtubers in regards to smaller movies or non existing ip movies say " oh I haven't seen that yet but I will eventually" and when they do they praise them, yet they're so quick to rush out to see the big studio movies and almost always say "it was ok or it was fine, or I liked it but had alot of issues with but it was somewhat entertaining enough" youtubers and youtube channels need to be better and need to represent all movies better

@TheKristianHarloff I've been a big fan of yours for 10 years and will continue being a fan but I think yall need to show smaller movies or non ips more respect and attention... Gareth Edward's new movie The Creator and Killers of the Flower Moon are coming out soon and I've only seen or heard Rocha talk about them and react to the trailers... have a good day kristian!
