Aquaphalt 6.0 Review - How to fix asphalt driveway depression and pothole like a Pro?

Fixing depression and pothole using cold patch has been a challenge for home owners in the past, because traditional cold patch doesn't dry and hardens like hot asphalt, you will have to wait at least 30-90 days before applying sealer. That is very annoying. Recently a new product called #Aquaphalt 6.0 came into the market and I will put this to the test and fix my asphalt depression problem. I will also show you a lot of DIY tips on making a smooth transition between the old and new asphalt. The end result will look amazing after applying 2 coats of driveway sealer. I hope I can inspire more people to DIY. I am NOT affiliated with any of these products, companies or people, I just want to share my experience as a serious DIYer and try to help other DIY people out there. Please give it a thumbs up and SUBSCRIBE to support me!

Looks awesome. Our depression in our 40 year old pad was basically a small lake 8' across, around 3-4" deep that had filled in with muck. Dug the muck out, fixed drainage issue, and paid asphalt contractor $2,300 to level the hole and put a fresh 1.5" asphalt on the whole pad. But when I resealed it last year I did that 50 shades of black thing, so thanks for the tip on that....

FYI if the patch isn’t too close to any walls you don’t need to spend money renting a plate compactor. You can just tire roll the asphalt with your car. Because of the weight it will do a better job of compacting the asphalt than a plate compactor and the water will keep the asphalt from picking up on your tires. Just keep your tires straight when you drive over it.

Thank you, this is a great video, I do have one question. You use the filler to feather the edges and smooth out the transitions. Would it work to spread a layer over the entire patch to fill in the rough texture a little more and give the entire layer a smoother finish. In the end it's only the unfilled section of the patch that shows.

The product you are using is now closer to 90.00 in the US at Home Depot. For the patch I did earlier this summer the patch product alone would have been almost 900.00 dollars. I think if you are using only one of two cans that is fine. Instead of renting the tool you used I used plywood and my truck. It compressed it nicely though I am sure your rental tool did a better job, maybe for a future repair. My driveway is very long and not in the best shape. Thanks for making such a great video. I don't have to wake up early because we don't have the hot sun. I can rent the stamper tool but not that big machine. I'm a retired whimpy girl that is clueless but your video brings me confidence. I like the bags on the shoes idea, the big squeegee thing, and the little asphalt cutter. I like coffee but that's a loud coffee maker. Your neighbor down the street must be embarrassed to have different shades of gray but those desperate housewives across the street like you. Thanks for the laughs and step by step project!

Henery has a rubberized resurface product that you could use to seal the driveway. They say that it will fill voids like the ones you show with the large asphalt granular's. I've used to fill on large sections in my driveway where I removed cracked chunks from many years of use(a pickup truck bedful). Its a great product but its not cheap. I also used Sakretes product. It seems to work well but if its compacted in the package its a pain and very time consuming to break up to a workable form. You should apply these products about 1" higher than the surrounding surface. Manufactures say 1/2" but I find that it is not enough after driving on is for several months.

Major points for posting all the tips AND commenting on the crappy "pro" work down the street. I hate hiring any so-called pro because the last thing they care about is the quality of the work. Instead, it's always how quickly they can get the "job" done, which is always loosely defined so they have an out. And I'm talking about my direct experience with "pros" for drywall, tile, flooring, painting, framing, roofing, HVAC, etc. A relative of mine had two electricians quit a job involving why the power failed in a large part of his house. They quit because it was taking too long to find the fault (a broken wire in a box, which I found). So wouldn't they want a time-consuming job? No, because they want to bill a dozen or more half-hour jobs in a day and charge each one a minimum of an hour's work--and one even said words to that effect before quitting! Did they care about my relative being stuck with no power? No. I hate them all.
@pmg2120

The electricians should have been charging by the hour that way they wouldn’t have been screwed by your relative.
@rbrown2925
@rbrown2925 Год назад
@@pmg2120 The electricians WERE charging by the hour and it was my relative who was screwed. The electricians wanted to get 12 jobs in 8 hours, each with a min charge of an hour. They didn’t give a crap if my relative was stuck without lights.

@pmg2120 Год назад
@@rbrown2925 Oh ok. So the electricians were being paid by the hour and decided to lose money by leaving your relatives job, drive to another job site that luckily enough was ready for them to immediately start work/charging them by the hour. Got it. Makes perfect sense. Darn those crooked contractors.

Thanks for the patch product it seems way better then what I used so far on my 24yrs old driveway!!! Last time I used the same sealer as you and I liked it. And yes people start VERYYYY early or you will get issues when it dry too fast. I had to do 2 coats with the squeedge since my driveway is smooth as a baby skin with all the coats it got over time. I should have waited another morning for the second coat, sun heated the driveway and I has issue to do it. I added mist of water to help a bit and added water to the sealer so I was able to complete in 1 day. I wonder if the patch could be used to extend my driveway in one corner for 5 ft (2x5) so I can park my trailer and avoid to drive 1 wheel in the plants and cedar mulch.
@DIYable
@DIYable 2 года назад
Thanks for your comments. Yes this product is quite amazing. I thought about using this to extend the driveway too. If it's a small area, it should be good. However, if it's a big area, Aquaphalt is not ideal because it's very expensive. Also depends on the extension has light or heavy traffic, you may need to prep the base. I have a small area want to expend too, I may actually do it this summer. Stay tuned.

It's $89/pail in the US right now. Each pail contains 0.4 cubic feet. 3x20 section 4 inches thick is 20 cubic feet. That is 50 pails of that stuff. You really want to spend $4500 on materials and all that work trying to get a level and firmly compacted surface on such a large area? I'd be surprised if a paving contractor charged you more than $1000 for that size (going rate is $7 to $14 per square foot). TLDR; hire a professional paving company.

Thanks for the vid how would you do if the driveway is a slope ?

It should work the same because this product isn't self leveling and it dries fast. I have a steep slope driveway as well that I will eventually try this on

My driveway is a grey concrete color if i use asphalt to fill in the holes im going to have to use the sealer on the whole driveway to give it a nice black finish right? Or you dont recommend i do that??

For the driveway ramp (just outside of the garage), would you suggest using a plate compactor or just a hand tamper? The dimensions of the ramp area are about 10 feet x 1.5 feet (the depth closest to garage is about 3 inches, and gradually the depth becomes more shallow ending at about 1.5 inches deep). Also, to save on the amount of Aquaphalt, can I fill the deeper areas with an inch of fine gravel? Thanks in advance. I enjoy your videos!

I would definitely recommend using a plate compactor if possible, there is no way manual hand tamping can match the force of the machine. About filling the deeper area with fine gravel, honestly I would not recommend that because you may not be able to compact it to a solid state. For traditional walkway or driveway base, the industry uses "Crusher Run", after compacting it's solid like a rock. However, if you use fine gravel, it may become loose.... I would not take that risk.

@@DIYable Hi, thanks for your feedback about the hand tamper. After further inquiries, I am using 0-3/4" crusher run for the subgrade and subbase (from a nearby landscape company). Initially, I thought I may need some 'limestone screening' for the subbase (applied on top the subgrade of crusher run), but according to the landscape company, this type of mixed size crusher run (0 inch to 3/4 inch limestone) is all that is needed and should have enough fine particles to achieve a level surface prior to applying Aquaphalt. This 'mixed' crusher run is also ideal (as you probably know), since the fines will fill in the gaps of the larger rocks. So, I guess the plate compactor would help with the vibratory effect to 'shake' the fines into the gaps much more effectively. One note for DIYers, I also called Aquaphalt customer service and spoke with a rep (working from home as I could hear her young baby in the background). :) According to the rep, she said that a hand tamper (for my particular task) would be fine and that they (Aquaphalt) use hand tampers regularly. Perhaps it's just a personal choice, or maybe compacting the 'top Aquaphalt layer' is just as effective with a hand tamper (although more labour intensive).

I called Aquaphalt customer service again (got the same rep). She said that the recommendation for hand tamping is for the top Aquaphalt layer. In other words, either a plate compactor or hand tamper would work. As for the subgrade, she herself could not give any definitive comment, but suggested I contact their manager via email (michael@aquaphalt.com) for further advice.

Just spoke with Michael at Aquaphalt. He suggested using the plate compactor for the subgrade even though with a lot of effort you could do it with a hand tamper. For the Aquaphalt layer, again he said a better outcome would be seen with a plate compactor, but a hand tamper is fine as well.

@@sling74 I'm also trying to fix the sunken area on my driveway where the end of the driveway meets the garage concrete floor. Just curious, to do this, did you cut and remove the asphalt in the problematic area, fill with crush run and compact then apply Aquaphalt? Can i topup on existing asphalt or just remove a thin layer like @DIYable did? Thanks! I did contact Michael at Aquaphalt, he recommended removing the existing asphalt. I'm trying to save some Aquaphalt as the coverage of this stuff doesn't look that great and seems a little expensive. If it bonds well, ill just chisel away a thin layer and topup with Aquphalt.
