What's aquaponics all about? Find out as Rob Nash takes us on a tour of his Austin Aquaponics greenhouse where aquaculture and hydroponics unite for water conserving crops. On his rocky land that could never support food, he supplies local harvests all year to restaurants, drop-by customers, and the Lone Star Farmers' Market from aquaponics media-based and raft beds, along with wicking beds.

I like the idea of the rafts, it seems more simple than having the media beds for just a basic setup... I've seen the rafts floating directly in the fish tanks, ( I know the roots need some kind of protection ) I just wonder are you more limited in what varieties of plant can be grown by this method due to the constant submersion of the roots?

You really can build the garden that does not require weeding, tilling or cultivating, the spreading of fertilizer or compost, and no watering or irrigating; all while your plants yield up to 10 times the amount of veggies than plants from the dirt garden.

Very observant! nature requires all of the elements and in the same ratio as sea salts. Most of these are met with the pink gypsum and granite. (they used to be the ocean floor now a mountain). A few other items are missing in the system. If we had a list of the compost and tea ingredients we might have a more complete picture. One rule all growers/farmers miss is the microbial balance. 70% RNA with 30%DNA. that 30% should be equal parts 15% bacterial groups and 15% fungal groups. Once you get past beginners stage it would be helpful to purchase a refractometer to do and record you BRIX readings. This your customers can brag on for you.

The water troughs, how does the roots handle being in water all the time? I've seen and been told it isn't good to be in water 24/7 without rotting. I've found no information on how the flow of water is setup in a trough system. Is it drain pipe. Bell Siphon. On your bed with both water and dirt media, how do you get the water into dirt without getting dirt into the water? I really like your system but I'd really love a walk through on how you have it put together, from fish, through the plant beds, to sump pump and back to the fish. Do you have other videos?
@DeathlyDavid
@DeathlyDavid 10 лет назад
I'm not an aquaponics farmer but I believe it is because air is pumped through the troughs. 2:44 .
@richardbritt2281
@richardbritt2281 10 лет назад
I agree with the trough system and will build the same but I've seen videos where they have floating trays with plants suspended with roots soaking in the water 24/7. Don't understand how they DON'T die.
@draxxes1
@draxxes1 10 лет назад
There's a liner between water and media to keep dirt out but moisture still goes through. No sump pump, pump is in the fish tank recirculated using gravity.

Richard Britt certain plants do well being in water all the time like lettuce, plus its a 45 day cycle.
@signalfire6
@signalfire6 9 лет назад
Richard Britt Yes, it's mostly lettuces that do very well in the water full time; they grow 2-4 times faster because they don't have to push roots through dirt.

You should install solar panels to run the pumps then you would be even greener
@draxxes1
@draxxes1 10 лет назад
it would have to be a 20k + solar system to run that much water. From the looks of it, it has to be at least a 5-10k gph pump he's running 24/7.

Do the fish have a good quality of life? I don't see them in sunshine or with natural places to swim and replicate life in nature. It just worries me that they're being used in an "industrial" manner, as something that is kept but not given a happy life. Can anyone who does this address the question? Thank you!
@fudgefudge8913
@fudgefudge8913 2 года назад
The fish are usually not thought of as needing space and what not.. they are for eating and filtering the water, that's it. Idk if your idea would be feasible to keep water controlled (temp, quality). Maybe there would be a way to use a pond for this method? Idk.
@darkgalaxy794
@darkgalaxy794 5 лет назад
Sux for the fish, cramp ups in small space, a few will die rotten underwater a while till get notice .
@angeladunbar9997
@angeladunbar9997 5 лет назад
dark galaxy Does no one else see how poor the quality of life is for these fish? How about a real body of water they can swim to? Every set up I’ve seen has had cramped, unnatural settings for the fish. Also, the pumps are loud and the fish have to endure that, plus stomping and banging doors. We sure seem to have a hard time replicating nature
@Coopogers
@Coopogers 5 лет назад
I can see both sides... The need to keep the fish protected from predators and the importance of stress free fish living in a natural habitat. 🤔 I will be keeping this in mind
