I was going to suggest you could drop in the water from the top on the RFS but I see you reference my system. 😉 Another method to reduce the RFS flow is to design a "Cornell-Style" fish tank system. System is looking good as-is! No doubt it's doing a great job with the filtration.

Very good graphics Rob. I run three disc filters in parallel not in series as you recommend for filtration in my orchard. I always learn something from you.
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 3 года назад
I would suggest that parallel is better than series Oby-1. Decreases the flow into each filter which increases the retention time if you're talking solids settlers. 👍 The filters in series on the thumbnail were their as a bit of "click bait" 😉

G'Day Rob. Love the suggestion about the split radial flow settling tanks. Think I am going to use that for my bigger aquaponics setup being planned.
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 3 года назад
I think 2 drums a great idea if you can't find the larger tanks or are adding one into an existing system to improve retention time. A single flow into 1 larger tank would still be my choice if I could find a tank that was suitable. 👍 Less pipework & cleaning to do. 😉 Cheers Richard & hope the build goes smoothly.

Running radial flow in parallel.... Good idea that I hadn't thought of! I plan to build a commercial system soon, but multiple blue barrels can be had much cheaper than a big tub.
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 3 года назад
If you're starting from scratch you should probably look into a twin drain set up like the Cornell dual drain design. This was meant more for folks that already have a system on the go but want more retention time. I think I have a video explaining it. Will go have a gander.
@RobsAquaponics

This section of video on my parents system might help with a bit of an explanation Alexandeur. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-DaURXZqEvJc.htmlm43s I'll look at doing a video explaining how they work down the track.
@DingoAteMeBaby
@DingoAteMeBaby 3 года назад
Its crazy how your setup's water resistance is so similar to electrical resistance. Your radial flow settlers are like resistors and putting them in parallel doesn't half the "voltage" or water pressure in this case!
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 3 года назад
Not after reducing water pressure, we looking to increase the time the water spends in the drum (retention time) to allow solids to precipitate out of the water column. 👍
@alexcalabro8140
@alexcalabro8140 3 года назад
Great video as usual. I wish I would've thought about question 1 before doing my new system a few months back, I put 2 in series. Not thinking it would increase retention but thinking it would give more solids a chance to settle out. And I do get solids in both barrels but the split flow with longer retention time sounds more efficient. Cheers, for the discord. I didn't know he had one. I've seen lots of people join since I joined, he better give you some residuals lol.

@riograndevalleyhomestead2627
@riograndevalleyhomestead2627 2 года назад
@@RobsAquaponics No, all that is going in the world right now I haven't gone through the trouble of having the system inspected. This has to be done before any kind of game fish can be added to it, and they really don't like people to use Tilapia as they are deemed an invasive species here. They push Trout but they are so particular in the water temperature and oxygen I don't know if I want to mess with them, I would like to get Blue Gill or White bass and try them. That will be a choir too as there are not any hatcheries near by for those species. Right now to follow my experimenting I am using Koi so that there may be some value to them down the road.

Hey Rob, for keeping pH down I've found keeping some old corals and sea shells in the sump works well. Have always managed to keep my pH levels between 6 - 7.
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 3 года назад
If it works for you go for it. 👍👍 I've seen others that use coral as well & they have no issues. I tried crushed shell grit in our first system & found it worked for a few months then stopped. I was told by an aquaculture designer that the powdered grit/dust dissolves really well so keeps the pH balanced until that's used up. After that the pH needs to drop a lot lower for it to break down the shells as it's a more stable form of carbonate. Cheers Shannon & happy growing mate.

Best, most consistent source for aquaponics content that I've found. Why is the acid safe in top-up water and not as a direct add? I can see it not having enough time to mix when adding to the tank but I would have guessed putting it in the sump would be ok. Thanks for the great videos!
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 3 года назад
Thanks Mark. 👍 I've seen too many folks add too much & kill their fish that's why I recommend only lowering the pH in the top up. I do know folks that will isolate the fish side of their system while treating the sump & grow bed water with acid. Most systems would need a bit of tweaking & an additional pump to be able to do so. I've been debating whether to completely bury my fish tank because I plan to put it inside of a greenhouse for the colder months there's at least three of those and my region. Water can store heat that way My only concern is that I only want to pump it once for power preservation I'll probably set up some solar panels and a battery bank or something. Perhaps i will pump it instead from the in ground tanks and let it gravity feed back in. Really appreciate everything you're doing here.

@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 3 года назад
I think they're a great idea. Only cons I can see is the space they take up if you don't have a lot of room (like us at the moment) & the other would be the few minutes it takes through the week to decant the clear water out. There may be more con's that become evident after running one that I'm not aware of at the moment. I just haven't done a video on them as I'm yet to run a dedicated one from one of our systems as I've only run compost brewers in the past. Will post a vid once we have one up & running though. Cheers David.

As always ..Great video rob ..I am interested to hear your forthcoming video about pond liner (what I am using) ..I use the same overflow that you build in conjunction to a canister filter. Do you see any advantages to add a swirl fitter before the canister filter ? My setting is # because of the gravity limitations of the pond. Overflow goes to a sump tank ..a water pump from their send water to canister filter and goes to grow beds and floating raft bassin. Love your thoughts. Cheers mate from New York
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 3 года назад
Hey mate. The pond video will be a while in the making as I need to build it first. 😉😁 Not sure I'll be using a pond liner in it as I have a tank that will be partially buried to form the pond. I would go with a radial flow settler rather than a swirl as they have been shown to remove a lot more solids from the water than the swirl. As for adding a solid filter before the canister, I wouldn't worry about it if you think the canister is doing a good enough job. It will only create more work for you to do. Hope that helps some mate. Cheers.

I have seen folks do something similar Tim. Others will have a basket of biomedia (like the style I use) to act as a rudimentary "up flow" filter around the outlet to catch fine solids. Hope that helps some mate.

Hey Rob, thanks for another great video! I got a question I hope you can answer. I'm looking to build a system that uses one 275 gallon IBC fish tank, one 275 chop/flip ibc sump/growbed, a radial flow settler, and 55 gallon MBBR; what air volume do you estimate moves through the MBBR to get that good media agitation? Need to size an air compressor for this project. Regards!

I can't help with an exact amount sorry mate. I found it's best to oversize the pump & have a valve on the air line into the filter so it can be adjusted. Any excess can easily be shared with the fish tank like I do here. I'm very sorry it took so long to get back to you. Hope the system is doing well.

A good rule of thumb is the same litres of air per hour as there is water in the fish tank. So for an IBC you'd be looking at 1000lph for a sensibly stocked tank (no more than 45 fish). HTH some Tim. Cheers & have a top one mate.

I'm using the SunSun ACO-05 that I got from Guppies here in Australia. guppysaquariumproducts.com.au/electromagnetic-air-pump-70l-min-x-10-outputs-aco-05.html This style of compressor can be quite loud if you leave them sitting on a bench/shelf so I suspend mine from their handle which cuts out a lot of the noise. I have a similar looking one on our **Amazon page if you're in the US. It would be very hard to I think Wael so I'd err on the side of caution & make sure the system has been "cycling" for a long time before you add any fish in.

@RobsAquaponics

The solids lifting outlet sets the height in the fish tank so it will never drop lower that the outlet there. This older video explains how they work if it helps any. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-bmzgANTGJ0k.html

why do you have the drain from the fish tank on the upper side? instead of just at the bottom of the tank? seems to me you could avoid interior piping that way no? Plus the level would still be maintained by the pipe height in the "stilling filter tank". or am I missing something?
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics Год назад
If the pipe on the outside needs to be removed it will mean that the FT may drain (depending on valves & what not). Having the outlet at the top means there will always be a set amount in there, safeguarding the lives of the fish.

Hi Rob, how does the clay media become able to process the fish waste? Does the correct bacteria just appear or do you need to add something to start the chemical process ? Thank you, Brett.
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 3 года назад
Nitrifying bacteria are all around us already so it's a case of "build it & they will come". Some folks will try & speed up the process by adding medium from a healthy existing system that already contains the bacterias required.

HI Rob. I'm wondering if a settler could be combined with a bio filter? The space around the vertical column in the settler seems to be dead space. Could media be put in there to create a bio filter. The outflow pipe would need some mesh over it to prevent the media flowing out. The media would float so not interfere with the settling area at the bottom of the barrel. What do you think? Have you tried this? David
@MrTriplebass
@MrTriplebass Год назад
Ah. Sorry - the answer came to me as I asked the question! impossible to clean and the media would drop down into the settled poo. Back to the traditional design! Thanks Rob

@RobsAquaponics 3 года назад
Hi mate & sorry for not getting back to you sooner. The easiest way to fix this is to pull a few of the plants & add more back in once the fish grow a bit & start to consume more feed. Another way you could fix it is to add more fish to the system if you have the space in the tank & enough biofiltration capacity in the grow beds/filters. I do know some folks that will also add in compost or worm cast teas to help boost nutrients as well but haven't bothered with hat myself. Hope that helps some mate.

Will all aquaponics systems require such a high level of ph maintenance? I kept fishtanks for years and rarely had to adjust ph. Could be a totally silly question, I dont know much at all about aquaponics. Great video!
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 3 года назад
I've seen folks with smaller glass fish tank systems have very stable pH like "The Aquaponics Project" that asked the question. This is due mainly to a much lower stocking density which means less ammonia being converted through to nitrate which in turn requires less alkalinity to be consumed through the process. Hope that helps some Meaghan.

Hey Rob, i got a question that i was searching through books and your videos about the biofilter... So, as we know theres the surfice área of the material that we work as biofilter, i'm working with one that has 700 m2/m3, and this should work for about the ratio of 25 liters for 1 kg of fish food at 32% the question is: does the media work biotransformation of fish food per day? if so, them about 5 kg of fish food per day, i will need about 125 liters of biomedia?
@RobsAquaponics
@RobsAquaponics 2 года назад
Hey Bernardo. It's generally taken as a 24 hour period unless stated otherwise. I also answered this question in the description of the latest live stream for you.👍 There are a few ways to calculate TAN (Total Available Nitrogen) processing & I like to use Timmons & Ebeling equation from the Aquaculture bible. TAN = Total feed weight x percentage of protein x 0.092 / (time = 1 day) 5000g x 32% x 0.092 / 1 = 147.2 of TAN Assuming that the conversion rate is 0.5g of TAN per m² per day 147.2 (TAN) / .5 (gram processed per m²) = 294.4m² 1m³ (or 1000 litres) of your media has 700m² of surface 294.4 / .7 = 420.5714 litres of medium with a surface area of 700m²m³ would be needed. I hope that helps some mate.
