N.B.: This is a mashup of our 3 ULTIMATE snare head comparison videos (Aquarian comparison has been made in April 2019, Evans in June 2017 and Remo in December 2016) hence the slight variation in tempo (and change in clothing, rug or bass drum etc.) All heads were tuned at the same exact tension (88) using a DrumDial. We are grateful that every manufacturer provided their respective heads free of charge to help us make the original videos. Hope this clarifies any misunderstanding!
Snare: Yamaha Absolute Maple Hybrid 14X6"
Performer: Andrew Wyatt
The audio was recorded using a matched pair of AKG C414 for overheads, a Shure SM57 for the snare and a AKG D112 for the bass drum.
The video was filmed using a Canon Eos 70D for front view and a Canon Eos Rebel T3i for overview.
Thank you for watching!

I agree. I am NOT a professional drummer, but to my ears, the Evans just sounded best overall. The Remos were OK, but I still think the Evans' drumheads sounded the best. It is you and couple other people who are able to say that one company has different sound than the other one, while in real world there are huge differences between the heads of one company. There are more dampened one, some with more attack, some with loads of overtones, you name it. @@VojtechRozsival I have around 20 brand new Evans GI coated and 20 brand new Evans reso 300 replaced by Remo. While you might not be able to hear the difference in person myself and millions of other drummers can perceive the difference that Remo heads possess. There are a few exceptions where I don't feel there's enough difference so that right there says I'm STILL being objective while still preferring Remo over Evans on most snare drums. Wow, what a great production! Excellent balance of sound on the snare, video angles, and chaptering. With all the variations of tone that a snare can produce and so many factors (size, head, material, snares, tension) this certainly helps in getting the particular tone you're looking for. You can't tell a book by it's cover, but now at least I can hear what the head tone could be in comparison to all others. The matrix would be enormous, but imagine hearing the same head type on different snare materials (wood(s), steel/brass, concrete, fiber) or various snare sizes?.... how one instrument can be so diverse!

This video is so good! An epic effort to allow us drummers to sit back, relax and think about what batter head to try next. In terms of head choice, I tend to like Ambassador or G1, as they are very open sounding, and you can always add muffling yourself. But I have a couple of steel snares, with a sharp ping, there I might try Remo Powerstroke/Pinstripe/Controlled sound, or the Evans HD Dry. And in that regard, you folks have saved me so much time, thank you!

I'm a bit shocked, but I have to give the gold to the Aquarian Texture Coated. Thank you for your hard work! I only wish a few things were different... - The you had used a more standard snare like a Black Beauty - That you had used the same kick drum the whole time - That you had used the same room and rug the whole time - That you had used a metronome and played the same tempo the whole time
@Timpanopercussion
@Timpanopercussion 5 лет назад
Hi there, thank you for your constructive criticism! We hear you but we just want to clarify a few things :) - The snare choice is subjective and we thought the 14X6 (right between 5.5 and 6.5) Yamaha Maple snare would be somehow considered as "standard". But we get it for your choice of a Black Beauty ;) - This video is a mashup of our 3 ULTIMATE snare comparison videos (each made specifically for a certain brand) and almost 2 years and a half have passed by the time we did the first (Remo) and last (Aquarian) comparison. We've sold many kits during this period including those that were used in the videos so we had to change kick drums obviously! - It is the same room! For the rug, we didn't really pay attention. - As previously stated this is a mashup and we never thought that it would be leading to this compilation! We did replicate the same beat but it's only when we've edited THIS video that we realized the tempo was slightly varying from a comparison to another. Anyhow we're glad it helped you make a choice! Keep groovin' :)

To be fair with aquarian, those heads sound bad, but aparently that recording is older than the one for evans and for remo, and sound editing seems different. Maybe is another story with the same kind of recording for all brands.
@RodizellMusicalOne
@RodizellMusicalOne 4 года назад
Yeah this is Bullcrap, I use to be Remo only, for a long time I played only 14” Powerstroke 3’s coated with center dot, then I tried to a switch to Evans because people were speaking them up and I tried G2, EC with reverse dot, Genera Dry, HD and did not care too much for the ringing most of them gave and the durability was suspect, they dent quick, but then I met Aquarian and fell in Love, Hi- Velocity, Hi-Impact, Hi-Performance, and now I’m about to give the Texted coated with Dot a go or the Dejohnette! And on the toms I switched from Ambassadors or Emperors or Pin-Stripes clear and ebony, to EC2’s and Can’t remember the other one from Evans, now to Response 2 black coated and want a somewhat bright tone for this recording so I was feeling the Reflectors until I compared them to the Response 2 clears and the clears won my ears and heart, listen for yourself!

When it comes down to it, it’s all personal preference. But in my opinion from listening, the Evans heads, no matter the thickness, all sounded very much alike and high pitched? Aquarian seemed like hit or miss? Meaning some sounded really good and others, I wouldn’t use even if someone gave them to me! Remo, everyone of them in this video, sounded great!
@CameronBartholomew
@CameronBartholomew 5 лет назад
Evans are naturally higher pitched and brighter than Remo... at the same Drum Dial tension. But if you tuned them all to the same pitch with a Tune-Bot, all of a sudden it's a different ball game... and the Evans start to sound more open and full, while the Remos start to sound choked.
