Aquarium filters usually stop working due to having debris stuck in the filter impeller. Try removing the intake tube and seeing if you can remove the debris from the impeller. Sometimes if you run water through the impeller or just try to clean it that will help fix your filter. Sometimes small pieces of gravel or sand gets stuck into the intake and find themselves in the motor impeller which stops in the filter from working.

Another reason your aquarium filter isn’t working is because the motor went completely bad. This sometimes happens on filters and there’s not a whole lot you can do unless it’s rebuilt. Most of the cheaper aquarium filters can’t be rebuilt because it’s all in one housing.
Another reason your fish tank filter isn’t working is because you lost power to the filter itself. Sometimes things happen and it becomes unplugged or someone stepped on your power strip. It’s very common for pets or animals or children to walk by it and step on it and unplug the filter.
