My favorite substrate is using all 3, aqua soil, sand , and gravel! I put a layer of aqua soil in first, cap that with sand, and then sprinkle in some gravel or pebbles around my hardscape to blend in the look!

I tried few only sand will create big problems down the road so if you wanna have to pick one among pick Aquasoil but there is another option too mix used Aquasoil and small gravels mixed on bottom and top it up with sand and also depends on what kinda fish you planing to keep there are lots of cichlids who are well known for being massive diggers

No doubt - sand can be beautiful but more difficult to clean and the compression from the water weight can create those anaerobic pockets which can be troublesome. If you’re going with pure sand, keep it shallow. Just enough to cover the bottom plus 1/4” can help. Love the mix look - we did that in our riverbed build and it’s very cool.

Stratum is great stuff, but VERY expensive. I'd love to see some sort of actual comparison of it vs soil (in terms of, is it actually worth spending $$$ on vs just using potting soil capped with sand and/or gravel

True - what do you like to do when it does? Put a new layer on top?

@@BRSfresh Firstly I don't use soil, as it's expensive and fertilizers as well... I use only gravel , java fern, anubias with betta...
