An Aquarium Temperature Controller can be a life saver! We fish keepers have heard many stories of an aquarium heater failing causing aquarium temperature to either elevate or decrease to unsafe levels for our fish.
In this video we'll implement redundant safety measures that someday WILL be beneficial to the livelihood of your tank mates.

New to this-bought 2 jolly heaters for 2 different 5 gallon betta tanks. I thought the heaters would automatically cut off and they obviously did not. Woke up to one tank over 90 degrees and the other almost 90 degrees.

I've been in the hobby for decades and watched a lot of aquarium video's but this is the only one I've seen that describes this type of heater setup. It's such a great idea I don't know why other aquarium channels haven't mentioned it. I was using the Inkbird temperature controller with 2 three hundred watt heaters on my 240. As soon as I saw this, I got a two hundred watt and set it up as described. Let's hope I never have to find out if all three fail safes work. Thanks for the info.

@@KaveManAquatics After viewing your video numerous times, I think I got it! Question: Can a heater malfunction by staying on and heat aquarium water higher than what it is set for?
@KaveManAquatics

Under The Bus absolutely, that’s the whole point of this system. Having a back up sensor available to shut off a malfunctioning heater before it “cooks” your fish

Found this video after looking for 'Aquarium Temperature Controller', I have always used 2 small heaters, but one recently broke (in the off position) so I am using a larger spare heater on its own and wanted an extra level of safety if that failed, this goes beyond that. I didn't think of putting the big one on the controller and leaving the small one as a back up on its own. I was going to buy another small heater and controller and run them both off the controller, now I just need to buy a controller. Great video thank you very much.

Great video. Heater failure happend to my tank just 2 days ago. When feeding my African Cichlids early morning, I found the water temperature in my 800 liter tank (211 gallon) was 34.5c (94F). The heater was stuck on full blast. I am so glad I noticed it on time. Fish were still fine, actually they seemed as playful as ever... I installed now an Aqua Medic temperature controller with alarm, and a Aqua Medic titanium 300W heater. This should keep them safe!

Thank you so much for this video. Sharing your knowledge has really helped me understand. After almost 30 years, I am just getting back into having a fish tank. I have a 66 gallon tank that was given to me. The heater (Aqueon, that has a dial on top) i just purchased is not keeping consistent temperatures. I have two seperate digital thermometers (battery operated so i wanted a back up). When i noticed the temp drop, I used my digital meat thermometer to test the water temp, incase the other thermometers were defective. I am now looking at changing the heating set up to digital with a backup scenario that you just described. What I am considering is: Main heater: hygger submersible double quartz 300 watt Controller: inkbird ITC 306T I am not sure what wattage or brand of digital heater back up heater to get for the second. I do travel, so i want a solid back up for this tank. Would it be best to get the same heater, just set the temps differently? What would you recommend? Thank you in advance for your time to help me out.

It could be the heaters you have connected to them. Make sure the temperature set on the heater itself is correct. Just because controller turns them on if sensor on heater is set to low heater itself wont turn on.

Hi Kev, I like the information you've provided here as I am new to the hobby and in the process of setting up my first large tank 150 gal. With most heaters just having a knob you turn until the light comes on how do you get them to the slightly higher and slightly lower settings that needed in this set up? Also with a 150 gal tank would it be okay to use two 300 watt heaters? I just want you to know how much you're appreciated as I have gain so much valuable information from many of your videos. Keep doing what your doing because you are a true Blessing... Thank you

Glad to know I've been able to help! Usually thats the only adjustment you have on the heater itself. But thats why a heater controller comes in handy. It has a digital display to set the desired temp.
@FISHFANTASY_
@FISHFANTASY_ 8 месяцев назад
the problem arises when the heaters thermoatat fails and stays on. so its better to set the controller at a higher (max u wanna go) temperature than the heater. Therefore when the heater fails, we have a backup to shut the power off. there is more chance of the heater to fail than the controller.

Kev, apparently it’s tank day. I have a lot of questions about fish keeping. I have 3 heaters in this tank. Unfortunately, I bought these heaters before watching this video and they are all capable of heating this tank by themselves. I bought the 3rd because it’s nearly impossible to read the set temperature and therefore set the desired temperature on the 1st 2. I set them all to eighty. The two usually don’t turn on. I don’t know if the 3rd is heating or not but, it says the tank temperature is 88+. The temperature outside today is 79. I don’t have the home heat on and I’m not cooking. Where’s this excess heat coming from?

Great addition!! Have you ever used the temp controller as the final kill safe?? Say setting the 200w at 76 the 300w at 78 and the temp controller at 82. This keeps the heaters working as designed up until the failure point and you still have master shut off control with your controller. I recently purchased a smart heater that allows remote monitoring, so I would want the heater powered on unless an issue raises.

@KaveManAquatics
@KaveManAquatics 4 года назад
Lol, that’s a great question. There is no standard number as they all grow differently, eat and poop differently. In my opinion it depends on your maintenance consistency. If you can only do 1 water change per week then by the end of the week you shouldn’t reach a nítrate level that’s harmful for your fish. If you do then you either need to do more maintenance or lighten up the bio-load...it’ll take you some experimenting to see what fits your style.

Here’s a question……a 3d background isn’t currently in the budget but want my heaters to not be as visible. Instructions say not to lay the heater horizontally. Am I still able to lay them horizontally and still get good results as I have 3 heaters in my 125?

Don't know which heaters you're using but I've never had a problem with my heaters laying horizontally.

@@KaveManAquatics Hey can I ask you - some say don't get an overpowered heater because it could fry your tank badly if it stays on. Some say get an overpowered heater so that it doesn't have to come on and off as much and wears out slower. Do you think heater one should be rated for the tank size, or can it be rated up? Thanks!!!

Hi kev, I started a new 4x2x2 tank a few weeks ago. Have driftwood, 30kg of white gravel and a few rocks. The tank still has a excessive amount of white gravel dust in it. Can i remove and wash the gravel without starting the cycle again, or should i just gravel vac and wait it out?

Can anyone help? Our tank water is above the heater setting , it gets hot in our house during the summer. The heater will not maintain the temperature. How can I keep the water the same all year long? Most videos talk about the water cooling down and the heaters not keeping the tank water warm enough. I’m having the opposite issue thanks

Hii is it even better if i put 2 temperature controller inkbirds on both heaters so its kinda dubble triple safe or is that just overkill?

Another cheap option...especially for those that use homeassistant. You can purchase a shelly uni board and use several DS18B20 temp sensors. Total price of $20. Then you can use home assistant to control your heaters based on the sensors. You can even do it without HA if you use the relay on the uni for your heaters. Then you can just use the shelly app. Just thought I'd throw a cheaper option out there. Oh...you'll need an altoids case or something to house the circuit board.

Hello Kev! I'm searching for help, I can't seem to find a simple answer anywhere else. I quarantined one of my dying goldfish in a 3 gallon tank. I placed an air stone in there for oxygen for fish. Basically the fish is slowing down and even slow breathing, I can tell she's going to go soon if i dont do something. I just wanted to know what temputure would be good to keep this quarantined fish in. And also if there are any other tips to keep her alive and help heal her back to health would be appreciated ♡♡

Hi Kev, Your channel has been more than helpful to me in setting up my next tank. I need a setup as you show in this video because a heater failure caused me to lose all my fish in a 55-gallon community tank. It was sad. I'm now going to try my hand at African Cichlids and your guidance makes it very clear how to have a successful setup. I'm starting a 65-gallon tank with the equipment suggestions you've made in your videos. I bought an Oase Thermo 850 with a 400W heater in the canister filter. Do you recommend a 200W secondary heater?

Where would be a good placement for the temp control probe?
@KaveManAquatics
@KaveManAquatics Год назад
Doesnt really matter as long as its not right next to any heater. The heater may cause an increase in temp readings.

What if its a Coldwater tank that holds goldfish? I have bad air conditioning in my house and it gets super hot inside...sometimes triple digits. I have a vivosun brand thermostat how do I connect that to the fans hooked up to my tank?

I dont think it works in reverse. The controller only kicks on when temperature is lower than the setting, not higher than the setting.

Hmmm... Wouldn't you want the backup heater to be 300w too though? It seems far more likely that the first one will fail, and the 2nd one will need to heat the tank by itself and not be powerful enough to do that (if it's underpowered) than both are going to simultaneously fail and the 2nd one will be stuck on. I guess it depends how cold your room is and how long it will be before you're going to notice. People who keep their home at 72 and are home all the time will need to do differently than people who have their house at 50-55 while.they are gone all day at work.
