Got a new tank set up, no fish yet, was trying to cycle it the old school way, having a hard time getting the readings I want to see, losing patience quick and my kids are like where’s the fish?? Haha I’m thinking of changing out the water and adding prime and stability and just adding some fish. Do you recommend adding more startup bacteria, like the biological startup liquid? Or does the prime already have that? Also when you said dose it everyday when you first get your fish in the tank, how long should you do that for?
I'm finding just how bad of a fish keeper I actually am. I was convinced that a RODI system was needed only to find out later that it's not the best idea since it removes absolutely everything of value from the water. I have also been doing weekly water changes as my 5 gallon tank looks like crap after about 5 days....but I have been doing major water changes thinking that it's helping
Fishcave for the big W! Watched all 3 installation videos. I have a suggestion for future moves. Before you set your cabinets on either tile or hardwood, put lots of felt pads on the bottom. You will be able to slide your cabinets with the tank empty, much more easily. Works for me and I do my aquarium moves solo, BUT my tanks are much smaller than yours BUT I am also way older than you. My largest tank was only 125 gallons, many moons ago and 20 years into retirement I caught the fish bug again. I continue to sing your praises at Petco. I wish I knew back in the day, what I've learned now from you. Thanks so much and God bless Seachem. Your videos are aawesome!!
Even after keeping fish for over 40 years, I learned so much from you today watching a number of your videos! Thank you so much! Can't wait to go down to the fish room and clear up those tanks!
Great video as usual, maybe my question is a subject of another video idea for you so here goes, I was told today when talking to a fish store about backup air pumps during a power outage, not to turn the filter back on if the outage had been for several hours because it would deliver dead bacteria back into the tank?. I know you advise people to be extremely careful when doing cannister cleans not contaminate the bacteria, I wonder how long the bacteria can survive when the filter isn't running, is it a valid point that the bacteria can die off so quickly over a few hours? More importantly if the bacteria may have died off what could you do to save the fish? - Nige UK
This is a very good question. unfortunately there isnt a clear and concise answer. Yes, bacteria can die off in a canister that has been without oxygen, yes toxic nitrogen gas can build up in the canister. How long does it take for this to happen, that is the hard part to determine. The best answer I can give is from my own experience. I once left a canisters valve closed for about 24 hours (by accident of course) and without thinking of the bacteria die off or the gas accumulation, I simply opened the valve back up and allowed the canister to run properly. I had no ammonia spikes due to loss of BB or any fish loss from any potential nitrogen gasses building up in the canister. So...take that with a grain of salt though lol
@@KaveManAquatics Thanks Kev for your prompt reply as usual, luckily we're not really affected by power outages in the UK though knowing the effects of a severe power failure to the tank is useful to know - cheers
Hi bro great content my tank is 2 ft and filter sump intake in right side main problem is dirt on substrate so do I need u to put my wave maker on left side in middle with pointing toward sand ?! Marine tank
Kev, can clown fish live happily without live anenome’s to live in? I’d like to get into salt water and just have clowns and live rock. But is that OK?
Hey Kev, I am new to the hobby loving your videos ty vm ! They are really helpful, question on the HOB video do you still use the carbon part of the equation if you have live plants? Last question any brand of HOB filter should be prepared like your video correct, sponge on the bottom and then bio media and if you say no carbon for planted then stop there correct?
I am cycling my tank, on day 9. fishless,.. using stability. My values are ammonia 0.5ppm, nitrites 8.0ppm, and nitrates 80ppm. should I do a partial water change?
So I’ve never heard of having to cycle before adding fish… Error #1 has already happened, fish seem fine, what can I do to make sure nothing happens? Any information helps. Thank you for your awesome videos, it helps a lot!
Hi Kev, really useful video as usual, I have one question though the B111 is suitable for up to 29 gallons apparently, so for your overstocked tank in the video is that all you use?
Yes, but remember this is just an emergency backup so you still have air in the tank if power goes out while no one is home. It will automatically turn on. You would still need some kind of manual battery operated air pump to use until the power comes back.
Kev. Some good advise…If you plan to ultimately make that tank a reef 🪸, do NOT buy coral eating fish. Also keep in mind its always good to plan ahead about type of fish you want and then buy them all at once. Some fish are very territorial, others are assholes and do not take kindly to new tenants. Even if in the same species.
Damn. That sucks. At least you found it. I lost a $80 sailfin once. Basically dismantled all decors looking for a body and found nothing. My best conclusion was,, fish jumped out of tank and the dog got to it before we did.
Our new tank has had a bloom for about a week and a half. It's only 10 gallons, i've been treating with prime and stability but the cloudiness wont go away. Not sure what to do.
Downloaded the app, kinda like the layout. Wish it had more fish species and information, or a community section where users could post their setups or get help with problems.
Hey kev. Had a question for ya. Have you ever tried a predator aquarium for monster fish? Personally i have a 75 gallon peacock and hap tank and then in my basement i have a 220 with a peacock bass. Tiger shovelnose, redtail cat, red devil, orange pike cichlid, red adapo pike cichlid and a arowana. Very cool watching them feed, Especially when i feed them live goldfish.
