Good thing to learn. Kenny at Eagle Eye Shooting has videos showing his barrel smithing and if I remember right (but may have been some other gunsmith video) I think some have shown his cutting & threading a blank for a barrel extension, explaining the process. Worth watching here on YT, he's got some interesting gunsmithing videos, usually with end-product footage at the range.
@@onpsxmember You're welcome. He's got some interesting videos that I've often considered a bolt gun version of Chad's work on YT. He has a fair amount of discussion of what makes a good barrel, how they're made as blanks, how they're chambered, etc. Mostly bolt gun, but he's built semi-autos also.
Nine seconds into the video Chad states that he's not here to bash a brand(s), only to identify and correct issues. Chad is a real gift to the AR world.
EVERY manufacturer can and does have occasional subpar parts slip under the eye of QC before leaving the factory. That's just an outcome of products being manufactured by we fallible humans. What sets one manufacturer apart from some others is how they own up to these problems by not burdening their customers with the fixes, but covering them under warranty. This was a very good video that shows even the more premier companies can generate mistakes. Well done, Chad!! 👍
As a guy who works in a metallurgical lab in the QC department of my company I can tell you "slips" are very rare and it is management who sends out sloppy products. They have deadlines to meet and orders to fill so they have the power to veto us if they wish.
Man I absolutely love watching your videos, I still watch all your older ones and get a smile when I see you have newer ones . Thank you so much for the education. I always get scared RU-vid will censor you .
I recently purchased a barrel from a reputable manufacturer that had chrome lining inconsistencies at the muzzle. I called rhem and they replaced it without issue. Always check your stuff and buy from good companies. Glad to hear they are taking ownership.
Holy shit!! Great video Chad, thanks for covering the dimple. I can’t believe I didn’t notice the extension was loose during headspacing. The weird part is I checked it with a 5.56 Field gauge and my BCM bolt wouldn’t close on it. I will definitely be a lot more thorough when it comes to inspecting barrels from now on! Zach
Once again another solid tidbit of knowledge. Thank you! I feel lucky to have started keeping up with your videos & getting the opportunity to learn from all the wisdom you share. Stellar! Cheers!🤘
I really enjoy your videos. I'm saving for a class. I've been building my own ARs but watching your content I realize there is so much more to building a great rifle the right way.
I have 3 DD barrels. Of every manufacturer I've used, I like their barrels the best as i find them extremely durable and much more accurate than average while remaining relatively light weight. They have the best customer service I've ever experienced.
The biggest difference in high reputation manufactures and low ones is simply quality control, just a few mins out of someone’s day to check work is all it takes.
I had always assumed that the index pin went through the extension and into the barrel fixing it in place like a pinned flash hider. Apparently I was wrong. Learned something new today. Thanks for posting this video.
Per the TDP, it isn’t supposed to be, but some manufacturers do it. It can cause problems in chamberings with larger diameter cases or even in 5.56 if they drill too deep. It’s best to follow the TDP and apply the correct torque for the extension, and it won’t come off unless someone really doesn’t know what they’re doing and torques the receiver with the barrel mounted in it, instead of isolating the barrel.
I thought for many years that the locator pin was seated into the barrel threads. As a matter of fact, I’ve made a few barrels from blanks, and seated the pins. I guess I need to disassemble the upper I built recently with a Colt replacement barrel, that has the gas port a little off center, and check the extension torque. Thanks for the continuing education.
I haven't purchased Daniel Defense products to this point, but this wouldn't negatively affect my decision if I decided to. Good on them for making it right, and I don't personally believe the defect should harm their reputation...it doesn't for me. In fact, their willingness to "make it right" enhances my opinion of DD.
The direction of how it was unclocked is common for people who have torqued off the muzzle device using the receiver mounted in a vice without isolating the barrel itself.
Happy 4th! I love the humbleness! 1 doesnt make all, ..things happen. your mission is teaching us, how to spot the "ones" that slip by! The Manugctr seems to want to uphold his end. I apreciate that!. This again, solidifies, how much I wish you would do a Combo Creation of your Gen purpose Rifle..I think it would be wicked awesome.! Love your vids, Hasppy 4th! be safe and cheers from the woods of Maine.. !!!!
Managed to create this issue myself while removing a self tightening muzzle device of a nitrided barrel. Barrel extension broke loose before the muzzle device.....real fun day. Learned a lesson though, always use a barrel vise for muzzle device removal not a reciever block.
I hope everyone who makes fun of budget builds watches this video. High end companies also do make mistakes and just because you spent 2k on top shelf parts for your rifle, doesn't mean it's guaranteed to be flawless.
Some times it isn't about letting one bad part go, that happens. The mark of a quality manufacturer is what they do when they're told they shipped a bad part.
Wish I sent you my Aero upper - first shot the charging handle smacked me in the nose😅. They tried to blame the Charging handle and said it was “too strong” and I needed a milspec(it was a Radian). Then they said it was the Cerakote- but I have others Cerakote with no issues. Seemed the latch pocket was ok, I swapped all parts to my other rifles upper and had zero issues…after lots of emails they told me to send it in for inspection. 2 months later I called, they had no update on the cause but shipped me a new upper..I got screwed on my matching Cerakote and they didn’t even offer anything, didn’t give me a cause or apologize😑.
YoU WON't hAvE tHeSE ISsUeS iF YOu bUy HiGH eNd. Any mfg that mass produces anything is going to have a few that slip through the QC process. The difference tho, IMO, is the company that stands behind their products. Good on DD for standing by their products and making it right. I always hear Chad say, "This is just one of one". Even the best of the best have a one off on occasion.
I remember when nitride barrels started becoming common loads for them would be nitrided after the extension was torqued. You could usually tell if the salt residue was left in the gap. Those often would come loose within a few rounds. I believe everyone now days knows to nitride and clean before they torque the extensions.
I first learned that barrels were 2 pieces when nitrided barrels got popular, and less detail oriented companies were nitriding both the extension and the barrel, and due to the slick surface of the nitriding (or something) the extensions were loosening from the rest of the barrel. Never bought one single nitrided barrel after hearing that, and yes, I know they can be done right. Phosphated and chrome lined all day.
I had no idea the barrel extension actually came off. I thought it was a solid piece, and the name extension was just one of those weird things lol. I love this channel. I'm a huge AR fan, and have built two of them. This channel is extremely informative.
I have that same barrel from Daniel defense, I had to drill a dimple for it, I noticed when installing the barrel the gas block aligned seemed a bit tricky like it was slightly canted. It seems to me now that it may be possible the port is slightly off center but nowhere near as bad as this example. The barrel was purchased through a different website but it’s that same profile DD CHF LW 14.5 mid length, I still have not test fired it
I got a new barrel (installed and sighted in only "30 rounds") but will be removing it to install in a new setup, I will definitely check the extention while it's out. Rosco K9 11.5....
Wish I had seen this before I ripped into my barrel. My gas port is integrated with the front sight which was slightly canted. I did a farmer fix which worked out fairly well but not 100%. For the record, my barrel was not DD but a Norc
I had a 300 B.O. barrel that had that problem. The way it was found was during removing from an upper receiver. The "fix" done was crank it to crazy torque on barrel nut, 😳 I had to cut it off. The upper receiver threads galled and stripped assembled without lubrication it looked like too. First time I had ever seen a barrel extension able to be unscrewed with my fingers. A 12.5 nitrated barrel from good company. Stuff happens, it wasn't a D.D. product. BTW.
I’d own a DD if I could. All mine are BCM and 1 Triarc. Much as I love DD, if I’m spending that much it’d be hard to chose between DD and Knights Armament. I typically only buy uppers and assemble a lower over time with the same fire controls configuration
If you can create a process that large manufacturers can use to significantly reduce the rate of failure or bad parts escaping QC without significantly increasing costs you will make so much money you will be crazy rich. Till then every manufacturer will have some units like this that will make it into customer hands.
Ask the customer if he used a reaction rod to tighten the barrel nut. I've seen them shear index pins and unscrew the extension. Makes sense because he would have taken the gas block off to put the barrel nut on, torqued it down, and then notices the new misalignment
The only way to not make a mistake is to do nothing. Good on DD for making right on this. But it sucks to pay DD prices and have such a preventable problem.
Anything manufactured will have issues sometimes. That's why quality control is paramount to ensure a product that has an issue or issues is caught and the the manufacturing is stopped until it's root cause is found and remedied.
I know that no manufacturers are 100% perfect, things happen. I'd hate to pay good money and find an issue like this. It did happen with a Ruger 10/22 of mine back in the late 80's The dam thing kept stovepiping . The gun store wouldn't exchange it but Ruger sent me a new one that's still running flawlessly.
LOLOL "ooppsssss" .....DD should be red-faced about that one....BUT ! everybody screws up once inna while, or they're not doing anything......cudos to them for fixing it.........OnWard.........
I work at a gun store, We refuse to carry DD since they lied to our owner's face at shot show about their new suppressors. When people come in asking for them we often offer to build them one using higher quality parts for less money including JP Enterprises internals and a Criterion or Proof barrel depending on application.
@@kylemarvin4384 Companies that don't care about their distributors and are only worried about making as much profit as they can. CMC and DD are the top two.
Like anything, things can occasionally be make wrong or out of spec. Most companies honor their warranties. Its only when there are many complaints of bad CS or products that we should avoid. But in cases like this and the Ballistic Advantage barrel, things happen. Has not swayed me away from either as both have a 98% approval rating. Nothing manmade will ever be 100% all the time.
More or less, from a gross movement perspective. But the tolerances between the throat groove (for the pin) and the diameter of the pin can vary, leaving some rotational movement potential. Reaction rods are the tool for the job, so that no stress is put on that pin/groove situation.
Is the barrel extension like this for just servicing/ease of production or separate heat treatment from the barrel? Is it only torqued or is there any sense of using something like rockset on it? Maybe I'm misremembering something about any thread locker or similar would get brittle from heat cycling and mess with the fit.
If someone had access to a lathe could they turn a few 0.0001 at a time until the extension indexed? That would also tighten up the headspace would it not?
I've had a stag that had a crooked gas port AND front sight gas block. It was probably off 7 degrees or so. This one is insanely off. I guess it happens to everyone.
