After trying several ways, videos (and SDKs), a lot of re-installing, ending up desperately reading about incompatible USB chipsets on some devices...it was indeed Kinect SDK 1.7, that helped me out here! :D Still some dlls missing, that the "Magic Sand" App was crying for. A new PC with Intel UHD chipset, running Windows 11 Pro, is now ready to run "Magic Sand". =)
Nevermind you just search in your C drive for the files. I then ran into the problem another person lower did error ending in 7xb just had to make sure the graphics card drivers were installed
Great video! I've really enjoyed using this software and found the calibration and UI easy to use. Do you plan to release an updated version (whether free or paid) of your software which includes water simulation? Cheers!
Hi all, Is anyone still actively trying this or attempting to? I'm at the stage of calibration, says its calibrated fine and then when I run the software all I get is a black screen...? The Xbox camera doesn't show up but the motor does. It doesn't allow me to download the MS Visual C because it says I already have another version installed. I checked. I have like 9 of them. 2008 all the way up to 2022. I'm worried about deleting any of them.
@make_and_remake I installed and made the model. After i start the program im able to define the ROI. After defining ROI, when i click auto calibration error msg shows "chessboard not found on trial" and also "chessboard could not be found moving chessboard closer to center" in fourth trial. Im also using windows 11. Is this the possible reason for the error.?? Anybody qho can help me out. Thanking you in advance

That is a really good question. I honestly have no idea if that would be possible. Recently I have been using the AR sandbox software to experiment with using the Kinect 2. I think it might be possible with that program. ar-sandbox.eu/shop/

Hello friend, I started to do everything that the video says, I followed each of the steps, but I tell you that when the program is already running I press "RUN!" but my screen is black, the colors or layers do not appear. What is the problem? It's the same problem as a previous person
Hi Jason, for some reason even after following all your steps when I run the Magic Sand app it says that Kinect sensor isn't recognized. I've tried this with 3 separate 1414 model sensors. I've also tried using these files both on Windows 7 and 10 and it seems to behave exactly the same no matter which drivers I'm installing. Any ideas? Thanks for your time!
I know in the comments people have said the chipset on their motherboards cause conflicts. That is probably the issue. You may need to see which chipsets they were having issues with. My class has built this several times using various machines including MSI, surface pro and think pads.
@@make_and_remake Hi sorry to bother you again, just wanted to let you know (and anyone else reading this) that on my Windows 10 machine the issue ended being my SDK version. When I installed version 1.8 the software started recognizing my 1414 model sensor. I was able to get everything else working too, cool stuff! Did you happen to create this in Unity?
This really depends on the protector being used. If a short throw projector is being used then the Kinect sits the same distance as the projector which is around 3 -4 feet above the sand table surface. If it’s a normal projector, the Kinect will still be around 3 -4 feet above, but the projector will be much further away
You are getting this message because you need to make sure when calibrating the sandbox, you smooth-out the sand first. Then in the next step take a flat surface like the foamboard and place it on top of the sand. I had it around 50mm above the sand. So, I used little "legs" on the sand then placed the foamboard on top of the legs. I then finished the calibration. Depending on the distance the Kinect is from the sand and size of your table, your "legs" may need to be a big higher or lower. Lastly, go to 8:15 in the video. It explains that you need to make sure you are defining the surface a bit bigger than the sand. If you define the red area just around the sand, the foamboard will be out of bounds which causes a lot of the "calibration error too big" message.
After you install the Kinect SDK listed in the video, did you go under "options" in the ZaDig program and "List All Devices"? The Kinect has to be actually attached to the computer at this point.

The only Windows software that I know that can do this for free is: ar-sandbox.eu/shop/ I have not installed it so I can tell you if it actually works or how well it makes the water simulation.

Hi, I am having issues with the vcomp120.dll file, it is not allowing me to open it. It says " You are attempting to open a file of type ' System File' (.dll)" then " These files are used by the operating system and by various programs. Editing or modifying them could damage your system." then it gives me some random options to open the dll file with, like note pad, Microsoft word, and etc. I am wondering if I need to install anything to get this working. Much help is needed. Thank you.
I’m stuck at a spot where it says the vcomp120.dll is missing. I don’t see that dll file in your link that you’ve provided. I see it in the video, but not in the actual link. Could you offer some advice on where I can safely find that?
I believe the vcomp120.dll is included in the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Packages. However, I just put a zip file into the Sandbox files. It has the dll file. Please use the link below. First make sure you install the Kinect SDK 1.7 first. Then connect the actual Kinect. The device has to be connected before running the zadig program. Then you should be able to install the drivers needed for the sandbox.
After installing the drivers and running magic sand for the first time, my projector screen mirrors my laptop, making it impossible to do the calibrate projector/Kinect step. Any ideas how to fix this?
Please make sure the project is set up in the display settings to “extend desktop” to the projector. That ensures the sandbox is having the projector display the region when you hit run
So I should move the white screen into the “extend screen” section and have the projector display that? I tried that but I am unable to move the white screen over to the projector area
Make sure you have the projector plug into the laptop before you turn it on. Then once on go under your display settings and make sure the projector is your second screen. Hey there. Thanks for sharing all this! Last week I got this up and running and i needed to come back to re-calibrate this week. I did this and now the sandbox software is just all black. I can see other stuff on the sand, if I am on my desktop for example. The calibration process says it completed successfully. Any ideas why this might be happening?
That's strange. When you say other "stuff" do you mean your desktop icons? Are you extending your desktop so your second screen is project in the sandbox?
@@make_and_remake Thanks for the reply and clarification. I guess I should say it seems like Magic sand is not outputting any of the color for the topography. If my desktop is active i can see it on the sand. If i am inside the Magic sand interface I can see the interface on the sand. If I choose the options to see the ROI on the sand, I can see that. When I hit RUN, instead of all the color being projected, it's all black. If I hit the button to enter the games, I see the loading screen for the games and can even see sharks. No topography or color though.
@@sawomirszeremeta1990 It seems like part of my problem was that the room was too bright. I turned off all the lights and the next time I calibrated, the software worked correctly.

Hi, thanks for this tut! Im stuck on calibrating where it keeps on saying: 'chessboard not found on trial'. Im running it for an hour already. Do u know why this problem occurs and how i could fix this?
I have never seen that message before. I used to leave the sandbox running all day in my classroom and never encountered this issue. Have you tried downloading the app again? Perhaps a file has been corrupted.
I am also having this issue. Did you ever find a solution? I am so close to having this Sand table set up for my job but I keep getting the same 'chessboard not found on trial' and I do not know where to go with this. I can send the code that runs continually saying that I cannot find it.
@@piep8056 I was able to get it to work, my projector was in mirror mode not in "extend hdmi display". When I switched my projection to extended display the chess board was projected onto the sand and the calibration process began.
Please make sure you first download the Microsoft Visual C++ that is included in the link. Install it. The install the Microsoft Development Kit for the Kinect, which is also included in the link. Then connect your Kinect and the run zadig 2.4. It has to be done in these steps.
THIS IS GREAT! I imagine you’re familiar with the UCLA Davis version… how robust or how would you compare what you built with that? I’m excited to have an opportunity to build one with a teacher.
This version is much easier to build and maintain. I have built the UCLA Davis version and it offers a rain maker which is incredible. However, it takes a much more powerful graphics card and requires a working knowledge of Linux. I have found for a regular classroom teacher the UCLA Davis version is generally more complicated to run and maintain. This version is pretty simple and one thing you don't get to see in the video is I had students build a couple of these Windows based ones to distribute across our district. The students were in 7th grade that built them. I had a couple high school students build the UCLA version, too. However, that one just sits in a storage closet because teachers were too frustrated with the constant crashes or calibration.

This is open source and you can use windows for free. I am not sure if you could add any other options because this version pretty much does everything we needed. We are starting next week so I will be more than happy to answer any questions you have below.

Thanks I was able to figure it out. I bought a $500 pc by ipason and it couldn’t find the DLL files. So I used an old hp pavilion laptop and it worked. It’s awesome. Kids love it. Thank you.
I was getting errors of missing files (MSVCP140.DLL, CONCRT140.DLL, VCRUNTIME140.DLL, and VCOMP120.DLL). So I located them and moved the into the folder with the Magic-Sand application. That fixed the missing file errors problem but now I get the error: "The application was not able to start correctly (0xc000007b)." I've tried numerous "fixes" found on RU-vid for this exact error code but none have worked for me. Please, has anyone had this problem and can tell me how to fix it? I'm really stuck! Thanks.
I was trying to use a mini HP desktop computer but it was unable to handle the graphics. I got a better computer: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4770 CPU @ 3.40GHz; 16.0 GB RAM; 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor; Windows 10 Pro; Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050. (Probably higher end than necessary.) The above problem went away. However I had a new bizarre problem. The Kinect camera would connect and disconnect continuously every couple of seconds from the USB system. We eventually discovered that the Kinect could not be plugged into the same power strip with the computer and projector! When plugged in elsewhere the problem was gone. The system is working great generally although calibration is sometimes tricky. Does anyone know if there are more detailed instructions available for the software? What does ROI stand for? What is the programming language? The games could really use some revision. @@owengrint7335
