Arachnophobia and fear of snakes must be an ancient human phobia. Spiders have very little reason to climb into a bag of crisps, or a bowl of popcorn. In fact, there's a possibility that the salt in the seasoning could severely irritate and burn their 'skin'. The spiders in the movie climbed into the bowl because the plot needed them to.
@kylemiller5148

This movie got more under my skin than eight legged freaks mostly because it feels so much more realistic and the idea of a spider infestation for me personally is more chilling than an all out war with unrealistically big spiders in a city

Plus, spiders wouldn't be able to hold up their own weight once they reach a certain size. Their legs would need to develop disproportionately larger and stronger in order to hold themselves up, let alone walk and hunt.

The closeup shots of the spiders always made them super creepy. That said, in my more recent years I've been challenging my phobias with spiders and other general dislikes, like broccoli and Brussel sprouts. I found a spider living in a hollow tube I'd left on my window ledge ... and decided not only to let it be, but use it to get rid of pesky little window flies by placing the tube over the fly. I expected the fly to get caught in the web, but the spider seemed to get the idea and would scurry down, catch the fly and then return to the web. I actually missed him when he disappeared :(

I remember watching this as a kid. It gave me arachnophobia for many years.

The death of the guy at the beginning shaped how I tuck the blankets under my feet ever since.

As a kid, I used to really like spiders. I was fascinated by them. But then my dad forced me to watch this and I was traumatized and I've been terrified ever since. Slowly though, I can watch videos about spiders, and ask about them, without having severe hallucinations or anxiety attacks.

To film the swarm scenes they used a species of social huntman spiders and used dry ice to control there movement fortunately, the spiders were harmless
