Since you asked, here is a fun spider fact: Tarantulas (Mygalomorphae) are the far more ancient extant members of the spider order. While their sheer size is certainly astounding, the most fascinating ability tarantulas have at their disposal is their ability to continue molting after reaching adulthood. While males will often die a year or two after reaching adulthood, the female will continue to molt for the rest of her life. Paired with the incredible phenomenon of limb regeneration that comes with a lot of molting processes, female tarantulas can effectively continue to regrow limbs for the rest of their ~20 year lifespans. Other female spiders may have this ability as well (not quite as well read on spiders as compared to insects...) but female tarantulas stand out as being particularly resilient.

Perfect summary!! My only thing i have as a slight complaint is i feel you should've mentioned that tarantulas are a different sub**order! Mygalomorpha and Mesothele deserve more love lol. If you didnt know, jumping spiders have predator vs prey recognition from birth, and a great place to find all of that summarized is Travis McEnery's jumping spider video. Thanks for the great content!!! Anatea formicaria is one of my favorites as far as spiders go, its a new caledonian native spider that mimics an ant which has evolved to match an ant which matches another ant lol! They do all those shenanigans to match eachother (the ant mimic jumped in after the real ants most likely) to use a niche mimicry form in which they all benefit from looking like that original ant that has a fairly potent sting, so all the predators avoid them!

Definitely, I feel Mesothelae definitely deserve their own spotlight, they're just THAT funky! Or maybe if he does a video on other arachnids as a whole?

Haha dont worry I definitely would love to do Suborder Spotlight videos and even family, genus, or species spotlight videos! Just been focusing on Order as a start but there are so many amazing groups I want to cover 😭 Anatea formicaria is a new one for me and this has sent me down a whole rabbit hole so thank you for sharing!

That is a very interesting video! I can't think of any interesting spider facts you did not mention. As for my favorite spider, I don't know, maybe Argiope bruennichi. It is a large colorful spider, and they make a zig-zag pattern in the web, which means you can recognize the spider easily with just the web. I also really like jumping spiders. I don't know if that is the right word for describing a spider, but they are really cute. When talking on how to distinguish spiders from insects you could have mentionned Opiliones, which are Arachnids, but not in the order Aranea. Speaking of classification, it would be interesting to discuss the basal insects. Like the hexapods that ore not insects. It would also be interesting to show a cladogram to see how all these group relate to each others, but cladograms ore often not fully resolved, so maybe it is better not to go into too much details.

Would love to do an overarching arthropod taxonomy video at some point! I feel it could help navigate this channel in the long term as videos of more groups get added in

Hi, thank you so much for your work, they've been very helpful. If I may ask, what's the current taxonomic database for Arthropods? There's WoRMS but they focus on marine species. Is there anything similar for Arthropoda, or even Insecta and Chelicerata?
@insectspotlightproject
@insectspotlightproject 5 месяцев назад
Admittedly I do not use a ton of online specimen databases - but there are some great databases for specific groups such as AntWeb and the World Spider Catalogue. Most large museums will also have their own database of specimens. For my work photographic databases are more useful, and citizen science is often the best way to photograph such diverse and geographically expansive taxons. Bugguide and Inaturalist are certainly not complete (and many species cant be identified by photo alone) but it more often than not provides what I am looking for. Perhaps with AI advancement, organizing existing specimen records into one giant database will be more feasible (I hope)
