I absolutely LOVE this series. Maybe if you ever finish it you could also tell us the orders of non insects, or even plants!!

I am a fan of all ecology so def not ruling it out! Im not sure if Id start a side channel for the other orders though or just post here. Ill probably be doing arthropod and other creepy crawlies for quite a while though first, as thats where I see the biggest information gap and misinformation spread. Thank you so much for the support!

I personally love bark lice every year when I go hiking at Ivanhoe or other nature trails in summer I see them walking up a maple or oak tree together like a mini herd of cattle and in flight they actually remind me of a moth or a cicada

They are absolutely adorable. The tree cattle name for Cerastipsocus venosus is SO fitting

@insectspotlightproject honest question I know that barklice use silk to defend themselves and the silk doesn't harm the tree, but does it help the trees, or is it just neutral. By help, I mean shielding the trees from their main predators like wood boaring insects and the fungal infection they carry?
@insectspotlightproject
@insectspotlightproject 2 месяца назад
@@RomulusTheWild6693 I havent been able to find any info on this but it certainly is a very interesting question! I assume it would form some sort of protection - not sure how significant it would end up being, but that silk can get pretty dense when the lice are in large numbers!

Thank you for spotlighting lice! Uncomfortable as the parasitic group is, they're also fascinating in how many adaptations they have. I had the privilege of scanning some poultry lice recently and it's incredible to see how complicated they are (if bothersome to my poor chickens)

Yo thats awesome!! Yea the lengths parasites go to adapt perfectly to their host is WILD

Not exactly a louse fact, but booklice are predated by the fittingly named book scorpion, which can also be found in books. Similarly, bark scorpions can also feed upon bark lice, at least as juveniles when they are comparatively sized. Unfortunately, there is no such thing as a pubic scorpion.
