Aravalli : Story of a dying mountain range

The Aravalli Mountain range is one of the oldest in the world. It extends across more than 693 kilometers from Champaner in Gujarat all the way to Delhi, through Rajasthan and Haryana.
The Aravallis, with its vast landscape and biological diversity, have shaped the northern landscape of India in more ways than one. They guide the monsoon clouds and also act as a groundwater recharge zone - making them important for the long-term ecological security of the cities.
The Aravallis also help in preventing long-term desertification. They act as a barrier against the wind, carrying sand from Thar desert and prevent it from entering into the Delhi NCR region.
But despite all this, the mountain range is under severe threat from mining and large-scale real estate developments. The degradation of the Aravallis has lead to decline in habitat wildlife, adding to the animal-human conflict in nearby areas.
Also the rainfall has been drastically reduced and groundwater recharge has been affected subsequently. It has also had an impact on people and their lifestyle - with mining, the dependency of people on forest has changed and they have started taking resources for granted.
In order to save the mountain range, the lack of concern from authorities has to change and constant intervention of the judicial system is needed. If not, the destruction of the mountain range is going to unleash catastrophic consequences.

People don't care about hills or water recharge or vegetation or wild life around. They just want money and money. I like the point that the situation can be control by govt. But the irony is that no govt talk about forests and vegetation. Due to populism govt only talk about those things that people want to listen and people living in big cities less care about forests and vegetation. They just want each and every materialistic things on time. Don't care where it's coming from and how it's going to impact environment and their own future.

hills are important because they create variety and intensity, which improves your endurance, anaerobic capacity, speed, power, running economy, and overall strength. For obvious reasons, hills increase the difficulty or the intensity of a run

Thankyou for uploading this. Aravali are the oldest range of India needs to be protected. It was very sad to see that Rajastan part lost 25% of the Aravali just due to mining. We can protect it by large scale Afforestation and introducing strict environment rules. Let's do it this is for all of us. Save Aravali, Save India!

Supreme court and others should drop the conception of protecting the environment which includes rivers, hills, air. These are self-purifying and self-protecting. Rather agencies should focus on protecting humans which is on the verge of facing the severe consequences of his actions, nature will not discriminate, it will punish everyone, God is impartial.

I haven't explored Aravali range fully, but how much i came across in Rajasthan, i found it to be really beautiful. Certain parts of Aravali are untouched by population and they are really blissful and gorgeous .The government really needs to focus on preservation of biodiversities of our nation too not just expanding cities and privatisation.

It is very disheartening to see this condition of Aravali. Mass destruction, illegal mining vanishing hills and rivers is very common here. I used to hear from grandparents that their used to be continuous rains for days at a time but it is drastically reduced now. Now even eastern part of Rajasthan is becoming dry and desert is surely expanding.

This is the real issue now a days... nobody understands. Govt is hardly bothered because trees won’t vote right!!! I hail from western ghats of Karnataka region where just 10 years back expected high temp would be 32. But now it is reaching 37-39. People and Govt still not awake. Forest are the one which assures life for our nxt generations... but hard fact is nobody is interested in preserving it neither public nor Govt. If it goes further even god also can’t save us...

In older ages there was the philosophy of next life after death, current generation is running from that theory, but God's laws are not based upon the humans' conception. Those who destroy environment, will have to take birth to correct the things or will be born in rain-deficit area and drink water from their feaces. Current generation is running after consumerism and following the materialistic culture of West which has made humans into animals.

the degradation of indian forests only accelerated after 1947, when corruption took over the land. upto mughal and maratha times the forests belonged to the Vanvasis , who lived there, and made a living out of the forests, and out of selfish interests took care of them. But once the govt has taken over the forests, large scale felling of trees, mining etc have taken a toll, and vanvasis have practically disappeared.the only solution, that i see as practical, and 100% guarantee of success , is that these vanavasi lands should be handed over to vanavasis. there is a poignant scene in the movie"madhumati", where Madhumati's father says that once all these lands were owned by us, but the govt has taken over and now logging is taking place. this movie came about 50 years ago. things have become only worse. the british took the forest lands in Assam and handed over to British tea plantations for a song. Aravalli can still be saved. But not under the current indian political climate. the cancer has spread too much.
