ARB Air Locker for Mercedes Sprinter | Rear Differential Upgrades Explained! 

Any pressurized air source can be used to actuate the locker. Assuming your VB suspension has an air tank, we should be able to use that for the Air locker.

Most 4x4 Sprinters don't have matching front and rear gear ratios to begin with. Both of our Sprinters (2019 & 2020) were equipped with 3.92 rear gears. The front differential is 4.20. Somehow (using witchcraft & fairy dust? lol) the transfer case is able to distribute power appropriately despite the difference in gear ratio. After this video was filmed, we changed the rear gear ratio in the 2020 Sprinter to 4.18. After reprogramming the computer with the corrected rear drive ratio we found the transfer case is still able to distribute power as intended. 2WD, 4x4 HIGH & 4x4 LOW function as expected!

@Oberranger We've been running the 4.18 rear gear swap in our van for the past 6000+ miles. No issues so far! 50/50 locking transfer case is being installed next week. No better way to learn how the system works tna good old fashioned R&D.

It just locks the rears, there's no magic to it. You won't get a locking center diff like a Jeep has, so if your fronts are spinning you're limited to 67% torque to the rears. 4ETS won't even know you're locked -- all it knows is both rears are spinning at the same rate, like they would be if they have traction.

@@bistromat exactly what we said. 4ets will not cooperate with it which means in the end it will have no traction at all. Not only in the back wheels but also on the front wheels. Same goes with Big Tyres and suspension „upgrades”. We have been invited to the facility that created 4x4 system which is installed in Stock Sprinter. We did tests with their technitians and engineers showing how all this „toys” are negatively affecting sprinter vehicles. Oberaigner facility created also a special version with 3 lockers and stronger low gears which was possible to order thru Mb Dealers. In thousands of miles of field testing on the Air Locker we've yet to see any electronic or mechanical issues with the 4ets system in both 2WD & 4x4 mode. In certain conditions we've found (usually with 4ets disabled in 4x4 Low) when a front wheel loses traction the open center differential (transfer case) sends power to the spinning front wheel and not the rear axle. This will be addressed by our 50/50 locking transfer case debuting later in the year.

@@Agileoffroad I understand that you are of bigger knowledge than the 4 wheel drive producers themselves who generally spent years on R&D (they built this systems since 1970's, millions of euros on their facilities in Austria, Germany and Charleston US as well as engineering process. If you change the trasfer case to 50/50 power distribution with OEM parts (as it is in Renault master - the center diff is of the same built as Sprinter) you will get a lot of damages and fractured parts due to not strong enough components which are different for 2wd selectable and permanent 4x4 OEM with 3 lockers. Even the HD permanent Sprinter with 3 lockers has 33/67 power distribution as 50/50 would be too strong for the whole mechanism. As we said we did a full tour at this facilities and interviewed the people who know more about this systems than we ourselves. We talked about all possible mods that are visible on the market (believe me or not they did test US market things) showing how 90% of them have are destructive or bring very dangerous impact on this vehicles and people driving them.
