In this video I discuss what modification I made to my 1/2 ton arbor press to get it ready to set leatherworking hardware. I also do a quick demonstration of using the makers mark stamp with the press.

*Works perfectly for my use as a heated press **MyBest.Tools** Space between the ram jack and the base is a little tight. Make sure you set the ram jack arm so that it's in a position for you to get maximum leverage on whatever you're pressing. You may have to unbolt the front plate of the press and realign the ram in the teeth so that the arm is not at an awkward angle when fully cranked down.Other than aligning the ram in the teeth with the crank arm this .5 ton arbor press comes out of the box pretty much ready to use.*

Taking it to a machine shop or actually grinding off the lower 3 to 4 teeth makes a ratchet type system to where you can adjust the angle of your arm without taking the plate off. I found this to be the best way

You polish the die and wash it real good with soap and distilled water and dry it well then put a little beeswax on the surface that will eliminate that silvery substance that getting on your product. I bought some iron shoe lasts years ago now, but I did polish the shoe last piece to a high gloss and washed them as I said and they have never rusted again and are still clean to this day.. I only wiped a little beeswax on the surface and wipe the surface off so only a a seal was left on the metal. I actually did the procedure on all my tools I bought that I had to remove a lot of rust. Lucky for me when I got my 29k it was in great condition for a sewing machine that is over a 100 yrs old. Thanks for the video.

Epoxy a washer on the back of your stamp. Spreads the load over the area of the stamp. I've done it with 3d printed stamps. Works a treat. Great video, thank you. 🖒

Nice press modifications. There was adjustments to square up the shaft to even the pressure. Great video

Thanks! When i took it to the machine shop they sanded the end completely flush before drilling the hole into the end of the ram arm.

Got one of these things in the UK, when it came I chucked the plate in the bin and replaced it with some 1/2 flat plate and glued on plastic underneath so is slotted in the slot and put a stamping block on top. The ram already had a hole and screw in the side of it which would accommodate all the punches and stamps, add a magnet to the ram and use leather cutters available on Ebay. The impression on the stamp was good and I'll try your method of the leather back on the stamp👍.

The store where I purchased mine said they were discontinuing the half ton press. They said they would have 1 ton and up. Maybe it was just my local store? Who knows. Thanks for commenting and letting us know they are still available.

Great job explaining you work. I would suggest making the top or bottom of the sides to be sure you have the stamp in the correct orientation. Have you ever stamped a peace and discovered the stump was oriented upside down? I have and it is very frustrating! In fact I mark all my lettering and numbering stamps to make sure I have them oriented correctly. It can also save time stamping your project. Good luck.

Thank you for your comment and taking the time to watch my video. I actually have done this already. I have a small black dots on the back of my stamp so that it is placed correctly every time. I have actually upgraded from these stamps to a new brass stamp. Although I still use this stamp I believe I get a crisper imprint with my brass stamps. I do a review video over my brass stamps you can check that out also.

Hi, thanks for the video. Trying to decide whether to go for a 1/2 ton or 1 ton press. Do you find the 1/2 ton sufficient or do you wish you had a stronger press? Thanks.
@MichaelMaysLeatherworks
@MichaelMaysLeatherworks 2 года назад
I would go with the 1 ton. The 1/2 ton works but it’s a lot more work to get a deep / even impression.

Harbor Freight still sells them. I paid 50 bucks. Crappers, it looks like I over paid. Did like the video, though. Thanks

Yes, they still sell the arbor presses, buy my local Harbor Freight stated they were discontinuing the 1/2 ton model that I show here. They said it was going to be 1 ton and up once the stock was sold.

Do a google search for a "Machine Shop" in your area. Anyone at a machine shop will be able to help you with these modifications. I hope this helps

What are the specs for what to ask for? Size of holes, set screw threading of the hole for the standard dies. Like line 24s, rivets, hole punches?
@MichaelMaysLeatherworks
@MichaelMaysLeatherworks 2 года назад
That will depend on the dies you are using. Just take what you need to the local machine shop and tell them what you want done. This is a very simple thing for them to do.

the leather was already stamped though...... lol. you can see the stamp when you are setting down and accidentally bump the delrin stamp out of the way a bit. if you want to make good videos, just make honest videos.... there is no need to try and cut corners and stuff.
@MichaelMaysLeatherworks
@MichaelMaysLeatherworks 2 года назад
The leather was not previously stamped. The leather is well-cased and the arm from the press had been resting on the stamp which does leave a slight impression. I’m sure you are aware that videos get edited and previous content gets cut. Thanks for watching
