I grew up during the "Golden Age" of video games and it was, indeed a magical time. It seemed like anything was possible. Imagine being 10 years old, having a cheesy slice of pizza then basking in the electronic glow and sound effects of Pac-Man, Donkey Kong, Just, Space Invaders, Battlezone, Centipede WHEN THEY WERE BRAND NEW! It was heaven.

When I was at a Dave & Busters in Cali, they had this Kung Fu Panda game where you basically hit a bunch of targets with your hands. It advertised that IF you could beat the game with a perfect score on round 3 before time ran out (As in, don't miss any of the targets and get the amount needed for every round prior as well), you would win 1000 tickets. I got to round 3, the final round, and I found that I had missed just one target and only got 32 out of 33, so I didn't win the tickets....and then I started thinking about the validity of what they were saying. So I played it again, got it perfect, didn't miss a single one, was at 32, but when they were supposed to give me one more target, there was a delay and it still marked me as losing so I wouldn't get the jackpot. I played it one more time, quicker than before, didn't let time run out at all, perfect score, at the 32 mark. An even LONGER delay occurred and it said I once again, lost and was not eligible for the jackpot. And that's when I realized that it, like many other games, was dookie and scamming the kids. I got a cool plush cat with a mustache though so, I guess I am the true winner of this tale.

My favorite classic arcade game is Double Dragon. I was a child at the beginning of the Golden Age of arcades so it wasn't until 1987 that I was old enough (ie. tall enough) to really play them. Before then I do remember going to the arcades and just watching the older kids play.

Half a candy reminds me of the time I went to Dave and Buster's. I played difficult (yet fairly high payout) games for about 3 hours, maybe more. I collected somewhere around 8,000 tickets, the best thing I could get was chamomile scented putty, for 6,500 tickets... Why anyone would want that is baffling to me, needless to say I won't be going there again... ever.

There's actually an arcade in Hawthorne that has a lot of classic arcade games (none of that flappy bird shit), and no ticket syastem. You just get a wrist band, and pay by the hour. I think that if arcades were more like that, they might be more common.

My two favorite arcade games are literally pinball and skee ball. Like seriously, when I was eight years old I snuck into the basement to play a Monster Inc pinball game on the computer and basically stayed glued to the computer for 17 hours. To this day I will literally play pinball games on the computer until I start to get progressively worse at it and I had the most fun at an arcade that was literally half pinball machines. Also when my family went to arcades skee ball was the game I tired of the slowest, on some visits where they had skee ball it was even the only game I played. (For those of you who don't know what skee ball is, basically think of it as a combination of miniature bowling and darts).
