I've only gotten to play this game once, but when the arcade got the cabinet, they closed down one month later. It's good to see how this game plays out.
As nice as this game was, they couldn't put it in a compilation -- it was based on another company's intellectual property that was used under license. But now that The Walt Disney Company owns the rights to Willow, I wonder if we won't see this game again somewhere.
Nice playing, too bad this game had the "Willow" name, because the movie was a flop, it probably turned off most arcade owners from purchasing it. I was into arcade games at the time, and I only saw this game in one location (a pizza shop). Too bad, because the gameplay and art were well above average.
the first time i saw someone beat this game i really liked how the game transitions from the death of the final boss straight to the ending credit roll without a change in screen
So sad... i remember getting the game on NES after playing this in the arcade. My god i was so disappointed that night. I never did get to beat this damn game.
Willow Arcade Game in 1989 by Capcom (USA) English version. The evil witch Queen Bavmorda is after the holy baby young girl of the lands, Elora Danan, intent on destroying her. Developed by Capcom Co., Ltd. Released Jun, 1989 Platform Arcade Published by Capcom USA Co., Ltd. Willow is an arcade game based loosely on the 1988 movie. Willow battle with the first level boss in the arcade game.
what a really disappointing ending! I spent hundreds of quarters on this damn game when it first came out (i was like 10) and could never make it past where you fight the 2 headed dragon. Im glad I never spent EVEN MORE quarter s to beat it, i would have been soooo crestfallen. Other than the ending it is a superb and extremely fun game to play......i highly recommend!
Who else thinks the Magic Sword(also by Capcom) henchmen concept should have been carried further, with examples like Sorsha with Madmartigan or Willow with Fin Raziel?
I would love to see a port of this game (since I don't remember seeing this in any arcade I was in back then). Late 80's and 90's Capcom arcade games are so recognizable that I didn't even have to see the logo to know this was done by them. Edit: That ending, tho...I've seen shmups with better endings.
"Out of the way peck !" I had to add that in as I watched this game. Too bad there's no places where old arcades are still around. It would be nice to play this game again.
Ronald M well, there is still an option to play this game, download Mame to your computer (multiple arcade machine emulator) and then, with that installed, download Willow in internet, easy :)
I actually found myself thinking the same thing about the music. I admit I don't know who were Capcom's composers back then but I'm willing to bet it's the same team.
The music in this game was done by the same guy who did the music in Mega Man 2 and LED Storm. The music in Little Nemo on NES was done by Junko Tamiya, who did the music for the NES version of Bionic Commando, and the arcade version of Strider.
DGneoseeker1 The the prophecy in the movie was something along the lines of "the baby will bring about the downfall of Queen Bavmorda" which she did, but not the way in which everyone interpreted it. It was more of a self fulfilling prophecy, the hunt for the baby started the chain of events that ended with her defeat.
DGneoseeker1 Such shame, go out and check out the movie. Not the greatest, but still up there with some other 80s classics like The Beastmaster and Ladyhawke, and a fun way to spend an evening. Also, if you get the chance, try out the NES version of Willow (or watch the longplay of it). It's far different than the arcade, since it's more of an action rpg similar in style to Crystalis. The story in the NES version is only loosely based on the movie, since they take a lot of liberty, but it's considered one of the best NES games around, not to mention one of the better movie-to-games around.
Like the ones listed below probably 3rd party Bullshit hence the reason it probably was not on camcom classics, vol 1 or 2.Still, they should still release it.
Funny, because the music in this game was done by the same guy who did the music for Mega Man 2, and the NES version, which is a completely different game was directed by Akira Kitamura, who also directed Mega Man 1 and 2.
looks pretty good for a game that came out in 1989. The Brownies are even is the game. Before my time, but I'd have played it if this was the WIllow ported to the NES instead of the horrid piece of shit they put out. It looked like a bad Zelda clone, with nothing to do with the movie.
CDProductions66 Probably not. A bunch of CPS1 ports on SNES sounded awful, like Final Fight, Street Fighter II, U.N Squadron, Magic Sword, Captain Commando, etc.
