If you need proof that this is the most authentic neo-retro game ever, look no further than the fact that it's actually fooled people into believing it's the real Fantasy Zone II.
If you want the Best Ending, you have to buy the Drop Tears in the last level. Once Dark Opa-Opa is defeated and he sits there blinking, fly over and drop one on him and it'll finish him off with some sparkly sounding music and then you get a better ending. It's pretty much the same as the Good ending but with more triumphant music and different dialogue.
fun fact: to defeat Halorings, you only need a Smart Bomb, because you can hide Opa-Opa in the white Haloring without die. then, when he contorn became yellow, you need use the Smart bomb. he will make all the Haloring shots became white. make this two times, and you defeated the Halorings
It looks like the game had 3 endings and I think they go like this: Good: Stay on Zone-B throughout the whole game and use Drop Tear on the Evil Opa-Opa Neutral: Stay mainly on Zone-B and a few on Zone-A Bad: Stay on Zone-A throughout the whole game
***** You are right. I got the bad ending where Opa-Opa went bad, and as a result, it led to Harrier and Uriah (from Space Harrier) to intervene and ultimately destroy it.
What emulator are you using? Many of the bosses seemed to fire in weird patterns, and you didn't use any of the normal strats to beat them, just straight up dogged the bullet hell, impressive?
Forgot to mention that pirate ROM also has the arcade Fantasy Zone 1 in it as well. The games are easy enough to find, go to the test menu and inside is an option to choose from 3 games, Shinobi, or both Fantasy Zones.
The only ones I found through VGZ format were from a different version of this game. Regardless, I found the video on YT which listed all the tracks and ended up ripping each one individually and might upload them.
I know this comment is 5 years old already (probably almost 6 as we're at the beggining of 2020), but there's a VGM rip of this game on VGMRips since 2012, it sucks that you didn't find it earlier :/
This game is Cuphead and Gradius on steroids. ONE HIT KILLS YOU. Like it's impossible not to get hit in this game. This game accepts nothing but perfection. One of the most brutal arcade shooters out there
Nice! I played the first Fantasy Zone over 20 years ago on the NES; it was the Tengen port. I miss Tengen more then any other game developer or publisher.
This longplay is listed as Arcade despite the fact that no cabinet for Fantasy Zone II was ever released, even though it is technically an arcade game. This version of Fantasy Zone II was released in the Sega Ages series on PS2; it was actually developed for an emulator of the (slightly improved) System 16 arcade hardware.
True, however there were some pirates who converted the game to an Arcade Cabinet, thus literaly making it an Arcade Game, in fact you can get the rom of that pirate version in any emulation site. But even with that it was made with the System 16, therefore it should be counted as an arcade game.

This may be graphically superior but I still think the original Master System version is the better game. It's the little details, like the bases dropping floating paper money when they die for example (really satisfying to collect), or that the coin bouncing seems a bit more satisfying, and the fact the shop is permanent in each level.
There's two things I like better about the original Master System version: The bases drop paper notes that float down the screen (they look cool and are satisfying to collect) and the shops are in a fixed place so you can always count on them and return to them whenever you need to (makes planning your strategy a bit easier).
I know M2 did this game, but before it was released to MAME, there was a bootleg Shinobi ROM that had Shinobi, Fantasy Zone, and this version of Fantasy Zone II hidden within it. It was only accessible via the dipswitch menu, where you could choose to boot the ROM of the 3 games I listed.
@@Bloodreign1 Actually, M2 remade this game for the Sega System 16 Hardware on the PS2 in Japan 2008 and renamed it Fantasy Zone 2 DX. It was re-released on Nintendo 3DS under the titled 3DS Fantasy Zone 2 W.
It was released in a SEGA Collection in 2008. It used the SEGA System 16 hardware as a basis and was based off of the Master System version. So technically it was, but it wasn't
This version was developed by M2 as a extra for the Sega Ages 2500 Fantasy Zone Collection for PS2, it was only released in Japan. This version was developed in a modified Sega System 16 arcade board, it had more RAM than actuall System 16. Few years back it was released in west as part of Sega 3D Classics Collection on Nintendo 3DS.
