I agree. Next to the original Atari game, Breakout, released 10 years prior, this is one of the best games of its kind. You can spend hours mastering the levels!
I used to be SO addicted to this game when I was in college in 1991. I would play for hours in the student center; they had a couple of arcade games, and this was one of them. I've even won the game a time or two!

This game will always remind me of my dad, he would take my older brother and I to the arcades and he could go forever on this game. I sucked as a kid and as a 30 plus year old I still suck haha. Great memories, thank you!
This reminds me of my dad for a different reason. The only arcade in my area that had it was the bowling alley so my brother and I only got to play it on Wednesdays when my dad would take us there for league night and we'd go fuck off in the arcade during his practice games. Had it been at all the arcades I'm not sure my bro and I would've so strongly gravitated toward it but I guess lack of availability artificially inflated our interest in it. No problem with that cuz it's a damn good game. To this day, my dad still whimsically (but with slightly detectable annoyance) recalls the time my bro and I fucked up a perfect practice game of his just to bug him for quarters and he had to settle for a 265.
This game will always remind me of some birthday party, probably when I was 7 or 8 and one superstar uncle with long hair on a 386 (maybe it was a good 286?) with a clean mouse and some time to kill just walking this game. I have it now authentically on a 386 and 486, but I can never get this far. Still, to this day, 30 years later, I can approximately show what townhouse that game that so fascinated me was played in.

And people these days say that they didn't know how to make good games 'back in the day'. I'd be so happy playing this or gauntlet, or even Bubble-bobble in the arcades, along with a lot of other games. Playing my favourite arcade games and doing well left me feeling so much happier and with a sense of achievement, more than any of the games these days can.
Oh god! The memories of this game...college '86 '87 & '88. Played it daily in the student center, after lunch and dinner & probably skipped a class or two. FINALLY beat it when a friend and I played as a team with a pocketful of quarters each. Then I never touched the machine again. Still, would love to own one for home.

When I was in high school, the local Pizza Ranch had this game in their game room. Two classmates and I were locked in a constant battle to unseat each other's high scores. Good times.... :)
If that's a somewhat fancy way of saying that the ball's trajectory isn't random, then yes. Yes, it does: You actually have a fair deal of control over the ball, one of the few good things about this game to make it into its sequels.
The only way to go if you want high scores. Break all those blocks, then get the sweet warp bonus too! I remember I used to wait until the very last block and then zip over to the warp. haha
Oh God! What memories brings me back this game. I first played it to a Cafe bar in my village on '88. I remember that instead of lever on the device there was a wheel,so it made the playing much harder for kid. Later I played it to NES console and then I found it easier.
This dude is so good that when he gets a "break" he doesnt exit. He stays on the level to kick it's ass a little more and then leaves at his leisure. Hahaha.
+pingamalinga That's actually the best way to get the high score for this game! Purposely avoid finishing levels and just kill as many enemies as you can for 100 pts each.
I've played an Arkanoid machine in an arcade before. It was one of my favorites because I liked how fluent the control was. You controlled it with a knob like Pong and it was fun
I've managed to run into this machine twice in my life, once as a kid, another within the last 15 years, both times I had no choice but to sink some money into it, I love me some Arkanoid.
When I was a kid, around 10 years old or so, I remember managing to beat this game. One of the few games I really mastered, alongside with Green Beret and Equinox. Remember beating hard games because I used to play a lot but this one was very very difficult but when I managed to know where to put the paddle and playing with the ball angle, I was able to beat it. In Spectrum DOH was specially difficult because it was nearly impossible to see where it was shooting, so it was to try and error. Also I beat this game in PC but never managed to beat revenge of doh
I remember ENDING this game wayyyyy back in the day in the late 80's as a teenager. The only arcade game I ever ended. It was a feeling like no other at the time, putting the 3 initials of my name in the high score. I was screaming at the top of my lungs after the giant head blew up. As luck would have it, of COURSE my friends went back to school at lunch while I kept playing, only to end it with no one around, and naturally they didn't believe me.
Holy shit, man. Not even up for debate. Youre the best Arkanoid player to ever walk the Earth. This game was one of my arcade favorites 30 years ago for sure. I was never too good at it, but Ive seen some great players. You smoke them all!
I suspect it was played using rollback, which lets you rewind if you die. There's really no way to know if anyone has used it, so I always assume it was used in game longplays.
God the memories of the local Mom n Pop pizza shop in the 80s! We would eat $1 baskets of French fries and .50 tall glasses of Coke! Sometimes we'd pitch in and get a large pizza for $7 lol. And play this and so many other games all night!
Thank you for this Longplay! So many memories...and so many quarters out of me! That game took some serious skill! Any chance of maybe doing a Longplay of Reaxxion for the PC someday? Similar concept, and like this game highly addictive as well.
the era and time of this story is unknown. after the mothership "arkanoid" was destroyed, a spacecraft "vaus" scrambled away from it. but only to be trapped in space warped by someone........
I love the music too - it featured in the The ZX Spectrum conversion, only it was used on the title screen, a little slower. Look for a video titled "Arkanoid ZX Spectrum"! :)

Nice. I used to finish this as well. I my games' place back in 87 or so, the version was the one that offered you a life in every 30,000 points. So when you ended in the boss you had some 25 lives left, and then you hit the boss in each life 15 times and then lose on purpose (each hit worths 1,000 points). Haven't searched it but I recall my best high beeing ~1,206,000. It's obvious the player here is also very good and doesn't look for a high score. For example I never used the fire gun to shoot the bonus-giving blocks cause each bonus is another 1,000. Also, when we got the purple "stage out", we did the same he does sometimes here, waiting to get more points. Sometimes when I ended with a fire gun I didn't complete the stage but kept shooting the flying objects (100 points each). I was amazed, when I tried to play this on MAME, and was FAR too difficult with the keyboard and NOT the "wheel" we had in the consoles. If you did that with the keyboard, you have my great respect!!! :)
Arkanoid, the original game (and one of the most well known arcade games in the 80's) that gave other companies a chance to make their own clones of this famous game. Much like Bust A Move (or Puzzle Bobble for Japan) which also got a lot of clones like Inside Out Thought Bubbles by Disney.
Arkanoid actually the first in these lines of games. Breakout and Super Breakout for Atari preceded Arkanoid. Arkanoid is definitely the superior game though.
You guys are not going to believe this I just found out that the guy who made the sound tracks made a version of the sound to a song called revenge of arkanood by cosió and sound super familiar also zuntata works with Cosió

I actually found contra to be one of the easiest arcade games that I’ve ever played. Funny how years later, they were rating it one of the hardest. That and robocop were super easy.
It was one of the most colorful games back then. Way too hard for me, I could reach lvl 3 then die there. And I remember it had a spin control. Very hard game, the ball moves extremely fast after some time.
The iOS version refers to them as "Dominator Of the Hours;" They're an unknown alien intelligence (possibly a race, or possibly a single consciousness) that can warp time and space to their liking. Who and what they actually are is still a mystery.
