In an interview with one of the UK magazinrs, the developer of the GBC port said that Capcom insisted that God awful noise in the background was an important part of this game. It's always good to see an official acknowledgment of Japanese war crimes...even those from the 80's. Never forget.

Go with the arcade if you want to play 1942. Skip the NES release, but if you want to try a port go with the homebrew for the 7800 or go with the GBC port since, IMO, it's better than the NES port was. But..playing the NES port at my uncle's when he rented it was my introduction to 1942, so even though Micronics put out a terribly-flawed, horrible-sounding port, I still owe it for putting the game on my radar. I never did get that version but did get 1943 for the NES which was a much better game on the system. So, yeah, arcade for the win here. My favorite in the series was 19XX: even though it was 5-6 years old, they still had one of those cabs at the little mall arcade during college. That was the first time I tried 19xx, and then I played through it in the dorm with a friend using MAME32k with it's support for kaillera for network play...that was cool but almost always with 19xx it would desync eventually. Sad that 19xx didn't get a home port to the Saturn or something.

I'd give 1942 a pass since it's such an early game on the system but it's still not something I'd recommend compared to every other port I've tried. I agree that 1943 is better in pretty much every way for both the NES and arcade. I've never tried 19xx so that may be something I try out the next time I record some arcade games.

Did I play 1942 on the NES with the volume off? I really don't remember it being this bad!

Nice doesnt seem like a bad port so much wider the plane and the whole view but looks like fun if youre into these airplane games

I think the NES port is pretty solid for a 1985 game. It has some slowdown issues and if this had come out in 1990 I'd ding some points off of it but it's pretty good overall. I'd take the arcade version over the NES port though with it's better graphics, audio and less slowdown. Honestly though I'd probably pass on this game since 1943 is better overall IMO.

@@RetroComparisons Yeah for sure, no doubt overall in most cases the arcade port will always be the superior version to the console ports though there are exxceptions or ones really, really close like MK 2 for SNES but more so TMNT Turtles in Time which was everything the arcade had and then some. But yeah otherwise the arcade ports of 80's and 90's games were definitely the superior versions in most cases. Good point 1943 did seem like the better game from what I recall paying in the arcade, my friend had 1943 on NES. There's always that one friend who has like 3 times the amount you have haha.
@RetroComparisons
@RetroComparisons 4 месяца назад
@@MKF30 Oh yeah Turtles In Time on the SNES if freaking amazing! The only advantage with the arcade is 4 player support but trying to get 3 other friends together these days seems impossible anyways lol! Haha yep there was always that one friend that had like every game, the SNES & Genesis or N64 & PS1, meanwhile I'd be lucky to get a used game every once in a while.
@MKF30
@MKF30 4 месяца назад
@@RetroComparisons Yeah that's really the only remote flaw I can think of the lack of 4 players but then to be fair back then no 16 bit beat em up were 4 players, so it wasnt that big a deal I often wondered though if Konami added the option with the Multi-tap option it could have worked with 3 since that bruce lee fighting game was but I digress, still an amazing game. Yeah on average I'd hang with 2 friends at a time unless it was a sleepover or someone's birthday something like that you know? lol Man we'd play MK2, SFII, TMNT, Mario, Sonic etc for hours. I feel most of us 80's and 90's kids had a SNES, Genesis just rotated at times you know til the 64 hit with 4 player games left and right lol
@RetroComparisons
@RetroComparisons 4 месяца назад
@@MKF30 Oh yeah totally. Having 4 player support for a beat em up on a 16 bit console would have caused major slowdown and wouldn't even be worth it. And damn, hearing you talk about those nights of hanging with friends in the 90s passing around the controller and just having the time of our lives...I miss it so much!!

There is a homebrew 7800 version of 1942, and in my opinion, it looks, plays, and sounds better than even the arcade version. Hope you compare that version 👍

Sound and gameplay speed aren't on par with the original, OBVIOUSLY, not even close (!), but I must say, NES port looks pretty good in terms of graphics and colors. P.S. chinese java port was so much better though^^))
@RetroComparisons
@RetroComparisons 4 месяца назад
I think the NES version, despite its flaws, was serviceable for its time. If it came out in 1990 I would say it's a really bad port but for 1985 standards it was pretty good for a home console port. Oh wow I didn't know this got a java port.

So many early Capcom and SNK NES ports were just mediocre at best. 1942 was far better on the Game Boy Color.

The NES Game Is Very Very Slow No Wonder Why The Super Nintendo Suffered Slowdown🔥🔥🔥🔥 Terrible Port, Good For Its Time But Its Bad, Arcade Totally Is The Better Game

I couldn't agree more. For 1985 being an early title on the console I'll give it a pass but I think every port I've personally played is better than the NES version.
