Well Doug I just ordered this monitor after watching this video. All of your other videos have been of great help to me (and can't thank you enough for answering previous questions I've had) and this seems pretty straight forward. I think I can handle removing a brace and flipping it over to be used in the back. :-) And de-casing wont be an issue.

Your virtual pin videos are the best! They definitely pushed me to mod my AFM cab and I'm almost finished now. Just need to wire up the buttons & plunger and configure. Then install the 32" monitor in the cab. Everything has worked out perfect so far. That Acer is incredible in the back box. So easy. :-) And the PC mounting bracket underneath works awesome for the SFF computer I'm using too. Thank you for your videos! ;-)

Awesome video as usual. The v display you recommended for the stock monitor is perfect. I was able to change the colors and turn down the brightness. What a huge difference. It's a shame that they couldn't do this before they shiped this out from the factory. This 32-inch mod has got me tempted. Maybe down the road. Thank you for making awesome content and helping me mod my cabinet. Shout out to Nail Buster for being the man and providing us with the software to make this happen. Thanks again for the Mod tips!! Just installed the 32" monitor and it really looks good, GREAT recommendation!! I'll be getting some Lexan/plexiglass instead of tempered/rolled glass because this will end up at our local Rec Center in Locust Point, Baltimore, MD, with lots of kids once COVID restrictions ease up. This will look great next to our 4 player stand-up Retro arcade/ 4 player stand-up Steam Bigbox arcade, 4 player motion arcade w/Xbox 360 Kinect running Aurora, and 7 player Rockband/Guitar Hero music Arcade. Will be adding two Sinden Lightguns to the Steam Arcade once they come in. If you're ever in the area feel free to check it out!! Thanks again!!

Excellent job, Doug! I really wish we had more options in the market. I would pay for a 1up (toy) virtual pin if it had a higher resolution 32" screen and priced around $1000. I feel it hits a perfect sweet spot between the minimal 1up and a much more expensive virtual pin.

I'm a little late to the party on this. Just did this mod this weekend. Though I kept my pcb stock. The geekworm 1.5 did not work correctly. Had to use the V20 version. Along with the screen fix file from teamencoder, it worked great! I added the Marseille mCable Classic in line with the hdmi output. Gotta say, if you are keeping the pcb stock, this IS A MUST!!! Along with the ability to control the monitor settings, contrast, brightness etc. Adding this just rocks. It upscaled the image to true 1080p AND added anti aliasing. WOW! What a difference. Kept the pcb output in 720p so I didnt lose performance.

Thank you SO much for showing us how to do this. It looks amazing! By the way, I got my Marvel Pinball in, and found I can NOT see the DMD, so I'm in the process of prototyping a magnifying device to park in front of the DMD, so I can see it. It's pretty simple, just a couple of suction cup tipped toy arrows, and a pair of lab clamps, with swivel grips, which will hold a Fresnel page magnifier, at just he right angle. The magnifier makes the DMD look nearly as big as a 4/4 scale DMD. I'm definitely going to have to look into installing 31" monitors. Using the 24" screen, with the included tables is like playing pinball with a BB. LOL That's really hard for me to see. Congrats on getting that monitor in, and the exterior detail work reinstalled, nicely! :)
@cooltoy

glad to hear you McGyvered a solution for the DMD for yourself, I know that's one complaint my wife has made about our Star Wars pinball, that the DMD text is small and hard for her to read.
@ThomasGrillo
@ThomasGrillo 3 года назад
@@cooltoy Ah, sorry to hear your wife isn't able to read that tiny DMD, either. All the stuff you need to make the device is on Amazon. Just look up Fresnel page magnifier (7x10), for the lens, and just toy arrows, lab clamps (test tube holder clamp). The arrows' suction cups hold nicely, to the plex, or rails. Position about 3, or 4 inches out from DMD, and center along sightline, between DMD, and height of eyepoint of player.

@kristendrews3895 3 года назад
I am excited to try this! I have a couple questions. How easy is it to get inside the cabinet once this monitor is installed? Are you able to use the original monitor base to angle it up or will the monitor have to come out completely? I'm also assuming you had to completely remove the original monitor from the machine, but I just wanted to make sure. Thanks for the content and always engaging with your viewers!
@cooltoy
@cooltoy 3 года назад
you can get inside the cabinet through the backside panels. Otherwise you would need to take off the trim pieces, remove the glass/plexiglass, and remove the monitor if you needed to access the inside front of the machine. As shown in this video, I'm using the original monitor base frame. The original monitor will need to come out as there is no sense in leaving it inside and then placing a new monitor on top of it.

Do you think it would fit if you leave the thin metal rim around the screen on after decasing the main plastic frame? I’m scared of cracking the screen without that on because of how fragile it is. It’s already a tight fit while loosening the sides. Seems like you need to be very delicate lifting the monitor to get underneath for access.

I used the geekworm v20 hdmi adapter. Had to add the teamencoder screen fix file. Then it worked correctly. If you are keeping the pcb stock, definelty would suggest an upscaler of some kind. I used the mCable, about $89 on Amazon. Upscaled it to 1080p and added anti aliasing to smooth out the graphics and jaggies. Looks way better. Cheaper option than a pc, and you are wanting to keep the pcb.

Before i saw your live video and you posting this I was trying to figure out what monitor I was going to go with. Asus has a thin body 31.5” (found on Best Buy) that I was thinking of using. Seeing the 32” I see you used, I wonder if the .5” less would be just enough where you wouldn’t have to uncase it.

31.5 might be the magic number for those of that dont want to pry the bezels off. It looks like most 31.5 screens are 2 inches less in height compared to the one used in this video

@Josh Hundley it'll will be a case by case basis since all monitors are made differently.. I contemplated using a few other different monitors but had to turn away from them since they had their HDMI input ports on the sides of the monitors, and I knew that would be problematic for the install. Lots of little things like that I had to keep into consideration. Though you may very well get lucky and find that you don't have to de-case that particular ASUS monitor. If you get it, let me know how the install works for you as I'd be interested to know the end result.

“I HATE YOU” But seriously Doug, amazing job. For a little more money Arcade1Up could have done the upgrades, and totally blown peoples minds.... BTW, I still love my Marvel Cab, but seeing what they could have done just makes me want more.... Can we say, next generation? Listen up, Arcade1Up do the upgrades in the same size cabinet! Do generic cab artwork, package all 30 games, upgrade to 1080p I’ll be first in line to buy it....and while I’m wishing for the moon... Plug in modules (or some way for idiots like me to easily) install game packages we can additionally buy. I think that about covers everything...lol Love your posts Doug...👍🏻❤️😎

I'm still personally shocked Arcade1Up didn't at the very least include internet connectivity and the ability to download and purchase new tables on their machines. Seems like that would have been a no brainer money making option.

I read in the comments that you have this 32" monitor plugged in separately to a power strip; When you turn on the power strip, does the monitor turn on as well, or do you have to take an additional step and press a button on the monitor or a remote to turn the monitor on?

@cooltoy

geekworm is really the only company making the lvds to hdmi controller board. If you are connecting a PC to the monitor you wont need it though since you could connect via standard HDMI. The only reason you would need a lvds to hdmi controller board is if you were trying to use the stock PCB with a different monitor.

Doug, how did you actually de-case this monitor? I've got the unit, and there is one screw on the back next to the HDMI, but I assume I've got to pry it open? Where did you start? Bottom? Any tricks or "watch outs" to know about?
@cooltoy
@cooltoy 3 года назад
I used a thin flat head screw driver to start prying off the out casing. Just slowly working my way around the monitor in circular fashion until I was able to pry off the bezel
@dimmydinosaur5571
@dimmydinosaur5571 3 года назад
@@cooltoy Awesome. Thanks for the fast response. Done and done. For anyone following, it's easiest (I think, at least on mine) to get it off at the bottom once you do a once around with a very very thin screwdriver. There will be some snapping sounds as the plastic catches disengage. After black casing is off, you then also need to remove outer silver frame on the edges to get it to fit in the pinball unit. Remove the black tape to get at the outer silver frame and then stick the tape back. You can sort of see how Doug did this at 2:05 (black tape shows signs that it was unpeeled and then re-stuck on after) and when you are done it will end up looking like it does at that time stamp. On my cab, I also loosened the top four screws just a turn to give some extra room - otherwise my monitor wouldn't quite fit (even with the "diet plan").

@derekdesiena9392 3 года назад
@@dimmydinosaur5571 I got all the way to the point of decasing everything and loosened the top screws on the body but it still feels tight. The screen is so thin and fragile I think any bending or pushing may crack it trying to get it in. Was it difficult for you to get it in such a tight space

How are you liking this addition? Still dig it? I am still using the stock monitor with my gutted popper 1up. Sometimes I think it is not necessary, some days I think it would be awesome. My only problem is I like the deep recess of the 24" I don't want to do the effort and wind up not liking it. I guess I can just lay a monitor in there and see if I like it.

So I'm not too tech savvy so please forgive my ignorance, but does the PCB, the stock monitor or both hold the res to 720p. More directly, can one improve the resolution with the stock PCB with a better monitor?
@cooltoy
@cooltoy 3 года назад
the stock arcade1up PCB is what is holding the display output to 720p. The stock arcade1up 24" playfield monitor is 1080p capable, yet only displays 720p when connected to the stock PCB due to the preset output coming from the PCB. You can not make any changes to the Arcade1up stock display resolution while maintaining the stock PCB.

@cooltoy
@cooltoy 3 года назад
You can use a zero delay encoder, but the plunger won’t connect to a standard usb encoder since it’s an analog input. There is a Geeekpi encoder that works that uses normal digital button inputs as well as analog inputs that you can use if you don’t want the KL25Z board, but you lose analog nudge capabilities if that matters to you. I believe this is the site that sells the KL25Z with the headers preinstalled virtuapin.net/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=8&products_id=131&zenid=8iimjqqpuj05j8c08j632tf257
