A musically and technically outstanding performance from Volodos. Highlights in this concerto include the dramatic build-up in the cadenza of the first movement, the scherzo-like section with dancing quality near the end of second movement, and of course, the coda as the music reaches the apogee of emotions.
00:00 - I. Allegro ma non tanto
17:48 - II. Intermezzo: Adagio
28:18 - III. Finale: Alla breve
Pianist: Arcadi Volodos
Conductor: Jukka-Pekka Saraste
Orchestra: Oslo Philharmonic
Recorded on 27/28 August 2008 in Oslo

Volodos is always excellent when playing Rachmaninoffs music.

The way the chords at 36:10 are played makes me feel things that shouldn't be possible in the span of just 25 seconds. Nobody plays this section better and nobody plays this concerto better.

Anson, many thanks for bringing this fine performance to us. Yes, the "scherzo"..or as I usually call it "the waltz in the Czar's palace..accelerated" is beautifully judged, the left hand melody from the pianist, the perfect dynamics from the orchestra. Thy final pages are as always by Volodos...clean, swift, in command.

I'm only listening to snippets, but I don't estimate this performance as very top tier. His musical choices are unusual. They may grab you or not. I would pay money to hear him play, definitely

20:46 - 21:14 is (IMHO) one of the most beautiful sections of music Rachmaninov has ever written and especially as performed here! Ironically Rachamninov's interpretation of this section is quite different. With apologies to my music idol Sergei Vasilyvitch, I like this (Volodos/ Oslo Philharmonic) interpretation better.

I absolutely agree. Volodos' interpretation of this work is truely fascinating.

Totally mind-blowing! Even more sensitive than his Berlin Phil version. Found a pretty moving (though not as more perfect) rendition by the Chinese pianist Xiangdong Kong at the 1992 Sydney International Competition: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-l8W3G3l1zuQ.html See what you think of the performance.

Thanks for sharing this recording. I have to confess that I haven't heard of him before. This is quite a decent performance with technical assurance (for most of the time) and heartfelt moments, although I don't necessarily agree with some of his interpretive choices (e.g. tempo at the very beginning).

nooo the tempi in volodos live recording with berlin phil/levine are perfect. my favorite recording of this century. the orchestra plays also much more powerful than in this recording. lim isnt even in the top 30

The arbitrary tempo changes in the finale are to me unsettling and ineffective.

So you play it at the correct tempo and fill halls with your effective rubato? I actually play this concerto and would never say such a thing.
