Arceneaux Wilson & Cole Record Breaking Direct Pipe Project 

Stunning accomplishment. I spent about four years in the late 60s working road construction in Michigan. My oldest brother worked for Shell Pipeline in Michigan 20 years installing and maintaining pipelines. One of my sons is a pipeline welder in the NY PA region. This was an amazing project.

Wow , impressive ! 780' of 54" with a 72" richmond was my record bore in 1987 .

Herrenknecht builds the the machine that thrust the pipe. It is owned and operated by Laney Directional Drilling. Laney never got a mention in the video but that is who installed the pipe.

Pretty awesome. Working in industrial repair I can only imagine the headaches stresses and killer deadlines these men and women work through.

Very impressive and it just shows how great things can be achieved! Due to planning restirctions, consultations, objections from the public, eco groups and such like, here in the UK it would probably take five years just to get approval!

Amazing technology! Didn’t realize they had progressed to anything of this scale with DP. I’ve seen 12” high pressure water done and thought that great just 2 years ago. Soon we’ll be able to do auto and rail tunnels (wouldn’t it be amazing to be able to do tunnels like those under the English Channel and the Hudson River? In just a couple of months vs years?

Incredible. I am wondering what would happen if the drill head needed to be replaced or if it ran into a hard rock bolder. To replace the drill in the 1 out of 100th chance I can imagine backing out the pipe a bit and then someone needing to crawl down the pipe. The latter I suppose could be avoided by sonar done the entire length of the route but much of it was actually covered by buildings.

I’ve heard of “laying some pipe” but this is ridiculous!

I ound a bag of Bentonite by the side of the road one time. Said "mortar" on the bag so I mixed some up and all I got was this "mud" seemingly useless for home use. Then I read up and found out how and what it's for.

how do they steer that head ?
