Glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for the positive feedback. I also have a manual install video for encrypting an Arch system.

Hi. I downloaded the iso and burned onto a usb drive. Tried installing it on my laptop and it boots from usb but when i want to start the installer it brirfly flashes /arch/boot/x86-64/vmlinuz-linux missing. Any other linux distro installers work. Any tips? I checked under windows and files are there.

I've done lots of Arch installs manually and with the Arch installer and I've never seen that message. Did you verify the ISO? Try downloading the ISO from a different mirror and re-burn it to your USB thumb drive. Did you burn your thumb drive in Windows? if so, what app did you use, Etcher, Rufus, something else? Are you new to Linux? If this is your first time attempting to install Linux, Arch may not be the right choice. Try Linux Mint.

@@linuxmench2118 hi, thanks for the response. I used mint for a while but never had to do too much technical stuff because it just worked. I want to challenge myself and learn more about Linux along the way. I did use different mirrors and versions. I didn't verify the iso, my mistake. I used Ultraiso under windows to burn the image, I figured if it worked fine for windows and mint it should work for this too. I was wrong. I read more of the wiki and tried Rufus in MBR mode which worked but the installer wouldn't go through to live environment. It stopped at waiting for the usb device by UUID. I read some more and tried Rufus in GPT DD mode to burn the image and boom, it got me into the live environment. I'm guessing it has to do something with properly writing syslinux bootloader onto the usb drive? Now I'm ready to install but I need to figure out the difference between UEFI and BIOS installation/partitioning. My laptop is from 2012 and UEFI isn't available. I haven't even started installing and already learned new commands and things about PCs in general. So that's my goal, learn Linux.

@@papiezguwniak Just to ensure we are on the same page about getting into the live environment, with Arch, you can't get into a live desktop where you can play with and test the system. The ISO takes you to a tty command prompt. At that point, you have two choices: manual install where you type in all the commands or their automated installer. I have a recent video showing how to use the automated installer. At the tyy type archinstall. It will choose the partition scheme for you. It will let you choose mirrors from your region, whether to encrypt the drive, a desktop or window manager, etc. Or you can follow my video to a base install, download my configuration files. Since it's a laptop, you should probably chose the option to encrypt; it will be harder to hack if stolen. The auto installer is fast and easy, good for first time users, should only take five minutes to answer questions and another five minutes to install. I have several videos on manual install with encryption and without. The manual encryption installs have two extremely difficult parts and if done incorrectly, you won't be able to log in to your installation. The manual install without encryption is a little easier. Your laptop is old and if it's not over 2 TB hard drive, you can choose dos as your partition scheme. My computers are from 2011 and 2012. I always go with dos. If you end up following one of my manual installs, if it's a base install, make sure you watch the following post install where I install a user with sudo, window managers, cinnamon desktop, and apps.

@@linuxmench2118 Thank you so much for all the info. By live environment I meant the console, yes. I'm going to watch more of your videos, very informative. I'll try both manual and auto installer. My goal is to learn more about Linux and I thought installing arch would teach me alot. Do you think this is a good way or should I rather stick with a popular distro and follow tutorials teaching Linux starting from the basics? Or perhaps I should do both? My SSD size is 256GB. I wonder what is the deal with drives over 2TB and why is setting up encryption manually so hard. I'm definitely going to follow your videos.
@linuxmench2118
@linuxmench2118 Год назад
You're welcome. I'm not sure why, but drives over 2 TB need a different partition scheme. Your SSD is small so a dos partition scheme is fine. I have a 2 TB drive and I used a dos partition scheme. I forgot to mention that I have written instructions for installing a base Arch system manually with encryption, without encryption, and post installation with user, user password, sudo rights, window managers, desktops, Firefox and many apps. This video shows you how to download my instructions in the terminal or in a web browser for free, no charge. It's called Arch Linux Written Install Instructions from Aug 20th. .. or just use 'reflector'
@linuxmench2118
@linuxmench2118 Год назад
I don't like reflector. When I tried using it, it picked slow mirrors that were out of sync. I prefer to have more control over the mirrors I use to download rather than an app choosing for me.
@nilz91
@nilz91 Год назад
@@linuxmench2118 play with the options: for your case, it would be something like 'reflector --verbose --save /etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist ---country "us" --protocol https --latest 10 --sort rate'

RU-vid automatically held back your comment with the reflector config. I tried to publish it, but it disappeared. I'll have to give reflector another try. Thanks for posting the info.
