As a frenchman subscribed to your channel Andy i must say i took the Battle of Crecy reference the very wrong way 😂 The french troops basically got massacree by the rate of fire and the reach of the english longbows. Some of the british soldiers skeletons were found to have deformations caused by the force required to even use them. On top of which came the church prohibition of crossbows which required far less training and was often carried by young unprepared « soldiers ». Farmboys essentially. To us french ppl. Bows and english people are pretty hard to tell apart. We would cut fingers to any archer captured, this is where ✌️ comes from. I liked you guys better with sub 12s. Greetings from an old enemy ✌️

Crossbows only look scary. They are a lot of fun to use. Especially because there are no regulations on their power. You are golden, as long as you don't point it at anyone when it's cocked and don't have your finger anywhere near the string when it's cocked/during the cocking process 🙂

Hi Andy, great video I highly enjoyed it. I was actually into archery and crossbow target shooting before I discovered air rifles, so I have a lot of love for this kind of thing. I find it bizarre that I can buy a 400+ FPS crossbow no problem up here in Scotland, but require an AWC to own a sub 12 ft/lb air rifle, which are significantly less dangerous than a big crossbow. I've even bought my daughter a 10lb junior bow and she really enjoys shooting targets in the back garden. Big fan of the channel, cheers!
@yannikoloff7659
@yannikoloff7659 Год назад
I advise you to get a Rolan Snake bow for you and your daughter, different poundage, obviously. We had been shooting those bows with my boy and enjoyed big time. There is also air archery. It's a 500+ fps arrow shooting rifles. All those crossbows are fading in It's shade.

My sister used to shoot a recurve bow in the 80’s, and I used to take her to the club and watch. They used to shoot between 50 and 100 yards and were really accurate considering wind effects. No wonder the English longbow was a feared weapon.

Hi, I bought a sub 12ft/lb air rifle this week for garden plinking, and I’m having great fun. I’m ever cautious of any stray or deflected pellets, of which I’ve had none. I dread to think what could happen if a carbon arrow left the garden no matter how big!

Very interesting. Would like to see more on the subject. Either bow or crossbow would be fine. I have the Adder with magazine. Super fun but taming the power is not easy and using it indoors is much more dangerous compared to our low powered air tools. I put a 90lbs limb (comes with 130lbs) on mine but I still need two thick archery back stops to catch the bolt reliably. I also have a 190lbs limb here but have not been able to test it. I will not try that inside of my apartment.

Thanks Andy, great episode. I love all forms of shooting and my own particular interest is the longbow. I had my own made for me back in the day. It had a draw-weight of 67lbs which when compared to the old war bows was feeble. Those boys would have been 140lbs and more. They had to be to throw the massive arrows they used against enemy forces. They’re also a different discipline altogether, with no sighting system at all aim is intuitive which is why it was law to practice at the butts every Sunday. A great sport to get into.
@mikesharp4033
@mikesharp4033 Год назад

As a youngster I built a crossbow from a kit sent through the post. Propped a hay bale against the garden shed. Bolt went straight through bale and both sides of the shed! History of the Medieval Longbow is a fascinating study on its own.

My pal from school had a crossbow back in 1976. We shot it at a target on the fence. One bolt went through the target, through the fence and into the front wing of his Dad's Rover P5. One of the many occasions we got into a lot of trouble! These things demand a lot of respect.....

An entertaining video BUT please be careful what you say and how you present any future videos. People are so frightened of any shooting sport, adverse publicity will shut the sport down very quickly. Some people after watching your video will buy a powerful bow and use it just to see what it is like in very inappropriate settings. I love shooting these things please plan any future videos carefully as I want to continue doing so. I had all my pistols taken from me after Dunblane.

Great video, would love to see more, maybe pistol crossbows which have become really popular and are a "little" more garden friendly. The main issue with crossbows is they are really easy to get hold of, cheap and no rfd requirements...but no where to shoot them, other than in your garden, if its big enough. Archery GB clubs can't / wont touch them them as rules and insurance won't permit it. No pest control reason for landowners to allow use on their land and virtually no specific crossbow clubs. I'll still keep buying them though as they are great fun! An enterprising land owner could make a fortune opening a crossbow range.

Can’t tell you how back garden unfriendly crossbows are, absolutely deadly and unless you own serious land then it’s club only unless you are mentally retarded… good on Andy for emphasising safety so much but after a neighbour managed to shoot through his backstop with a Barnett Rhino a few years ago and put a bolt through both sides of my car I am a bit wary of these.. Good fun in the right place but god it’s got to be the right place.. 😮 I am always amazed these are still certificate free to be honest..
@ianmycroft6979
@ianmycroft6979 Год назад
Just a point of order here Andy. You mentioned being ready to "fire" the bow. Fire is not a term used in Archery, unless you are talking about burning your bow!! In archery you "shoot" or "loose" the arrow. 😀👌

Get one.😊 Doesn't even need to be an expensive one if just keeping it as a fun thing. I've got some cheap "Cobra" (dunno much about it since it being a 2nd hand crossbow which my dad gave me for free before he passed away) in a woodland camo colored cheap stock. The trigger though is very good. It do shoot well and accurate with the red dot scope it has. Never done any long range with it though since more being an airgun guy over all. Of course, an expensive one will get you more tactical looks and more features.

This was a great “first impressions” review of a sport that I came to love over a decade ago.. thank you! Quick note about string releases though if I may…. A leather finger release tab for recurve bows and a simple wrist strap mounted trigger release for compound bows will help greatly in getting a clean release, these help by not “plucking” the bow string which gives a cleaner flight of the arrow. If a future video does come, I really hope it will contain some of my all time favourite bow shooting “Clout” (as seen in many medieval movies, all the archers lined up, arrows aimed high at a target some 200m away!) all the arrows loosed at the same time resulting in a hail of arrows falling out of the sky. Honestly of all the tournaments I’ve ever shot (more than I can count) this sight always makes me smile!

As an Australian it's nice to see something on AAR that I can actually buy without a gun license. Fortunately archery gear, excluding crossbows, are readily available to the masses & we can even hunt with them. For the pellet fanatics in your audience, there have been a number of products released over the years that attach to bows to enable you to fire pellets instead of arrows. The most recent of which was the Airow Gun, which was available in .50 & .68 caliber for paintball &.22 caliber for pellets.

It's a shame you can't have an opinion anymore about the past, what different countries have done and what people's faces look like to me. Were definitely turning into a communist state where you can't even say anything incase you might upset a snowflake 😪

Don't! have a look at the X-BOW REV 🤐 A 420fps pistol would definitely be the last nail, 120lb limbs as standard and the USA have 150lb limbs available 😭... "We're all doomed"

Hey Andy, maybe as a good crossover you should look at Airbows? They're essentially a PCP rifle where the shaft fits over the barrel? (Yes, I know, insert smart Alec comments below) Think pulling the end off (Steeeeady on) of a McDonald's straw and twizzling the sealed end to a point and blowing hard in the open end.. (I fear this comment has gone rogue by now) Scale it up but with a PCP chamber, trigger, rifle type stock and pic rails... There you have your Airbow effectively. The guys at Vector should love them! I'm guessing you were just using field tips on them? You should have loaded the bolts (quarrels) with broadheads and tried those. Those are properly eye opening! Especially if you blatt one into a block of ballistic gel. BTW crossbows are where we get the phrase "picking a quarrel" from.

Andy, you have to have a look at the X-Bow - FMA Supersonic Pistol Crossbow · Draw weight: 120 lbs · Velocity: 270fps to 330fps. For a pistol crossbow, it has unbelievable power, I have one and it is great fun to shoot. I own a few crossbows and another favourite of mine is the EK Archery Adder multi-shot crossbow (The world’s first tactical repeating crossbow) which holds up to seven bolts and can be fired at a rate of seven bolts in about 20 seconds with the quick reloading lever. Have a look and see what you think.

Great intro to the world of archery 🏹 I am primarily an archer shooting all types of bows but have a couple of air rifles that I like to pling with in the back garden. Like you I have a long garden (about 80 metres) where I shoot my Barnett TS390 crossbow - which is a serious bit of kit and even as an experienced archer I find the power and performance a little scary and definitely demands respect. Love your reviews as so many do - keep doing what you do 👍🏼🙏🏼

Great overview. Thank you. I love my archery. It's great fun. Two very welcoming clubs I can recommend (in the Scottish central belt) for great fun and excellent tuition are Beecraigs Archers near Linlithgow and West Lothian Archers.

As someone who use to shoot till I injured my shoulder, there are two more important personal safety items for bows. If your going to do a whole days shooting you need a finger tab or for a compound a trigger you dont want red raw fingers at the end uf the day. The other is a chest guard, a bow string catching on a part of the anatomy especially when it is cold is VERY painful. Other than that it is a great sport and if you join a club which is the best way to go very enjoyable.

Hi Andy, there are 2 more developments to the bows and crossbows recently... A guy in RU-vid called Joerg Sprave invented a magazine system for both crossbows and bows... These are available commercially from several gun shops and outdoor shops. There is one crossbow that cocks like an under lever Springer and has a capacity of up to 7 shots, and even speed loader clips to help reload quickly, this is the EK Archery Adder and with the strongest bow limb attached can generate close to 50fpe! After the crossbow versions he then turned to development of a system for bows.. again EK Archery took his design and went forward with a compound bow system that has a 6 arrow magazine. The compound bow magazine system allows about 1 shot per second, more than twice as fast as the crossbow version. Finally, as you probably can guess, the Chinese have copied the system and produce add on versions of the compound bow system and the overall price dropped by about £100, for bow and magazine... There is even a ball bearing shooter available that uses 15mm steel balls, even at 2 at a time when using a bow with over 40lbs pull!
