As you move closer to the target instead of the sight moving up it will start moving down. I test when this occurs and how much you sight changes as you move closer.
I test using a recurve bow sight at 10m, 15m and move to 5m to check what distance sight setting I should be using for this distance.
I discuss shooting field and adjusting your sight for angles.
I dscuss aiming off if your first shot misses the mark.
I discuss the difference between compound and recurve archery in adjusting your sights for field archery.

Stevo, its called the Near Zero and the other node is the Far Zero. the arrow travels in an arc starting from below the sight line in the near distance and then over and down below the sight line again at the far distance. So at each sight setting, there would be 2 distances at which a sight setting would work without changing

So like rifle shooting the projectile crosses line of sight twice?

Yes the same for all projectile motion

easy to work out using on target or archers advantage. its funny watching people miss the target in a shop not understanding how low the arrow starts and most shops dont even tell them or set the sight so they hit the target

For anyone who's wondering why you'd need to set your sight for a longer yardage when you are up close: Your arrows, no matter how fast they fly, are traveling in an arc, and are angled upward when they leave the bow. Your sight sits pretty high above the arrow, and the "crossover" Steven is referencing is the point where the arrow enters your field of view and crosses your sight pin. For longer targets your arrow will cross the pin and continue its arc until it hits the target (so your arrow will cross your pin twice; once on release and again when it hits the target). If your target is very close, then the arrow is going to hit the target before it has a chance to rise up high enough to cross your sight pin, and it will look like you are shooting low despite having your sight up high. So you have to lower your pin down so your pin matches the point of impact. Not sure if that helps anyone, but that's how I learned it.

This is a useful video and thank you also to the people in the comments that have helped me understand this new [to me] phenomenon. I'm 50 years old and only took up archery a year ago and I love it more than I ever expected. I mainly shoot target but 6 months ago I tried our club's field course and then got a second bow with a 5 pin sight (set at 10, 20, 30, 40, & 50m). When I shoot a sub 10m target, I've just used my 10m pin, thinking "there will be literally zero arrow drop so it's basically shooting a straight line", but I've then been mystified that these close shots arent spot on. Now I know! Cheers guys 👍

I would call that height over bore that’s what we would say in the gun world. I say the same thing with archery when explaining this.

It's definitely hight over bore at play. You're aiming for the first time your projectile intersects your sight line, not the second (which we do at long range).

At our range, Oranco, at most 3D tourneys we will have 2 fish targets down in the ditch below ground level, distance can vary. You have to shoot the practice butts and have YOUR numbers spot on. It is his fault for not doing his due diligence.

The archer that was complaining needs to learn this stuff HIMSELF and NOT blame anyone. It’s his ignorance. Every bow setup is different and one needs to shoot and figure out the numbers. On my compound for example when the sight is adjusted to 45 yards exactly it will also hit at 9 yards perfectly in the center of the bullseye . If I move it to 47 1/2 yards it is set for a12 yard shot and a 47 1/2 yard shot. Shooting up hill or down hill changes these numbers again. You have to shoot and create your own numbers. If you change anything like draw weight, draw length or arrows you need another set of numbers. Shooting for score requires knowing how to develop and use the numbers on the sight scale. This also applies to hunters archery setups but maybe not to the detail of competition archery? 👍👍

I had heard this some times, since I started shooting 3D back in 2007. But I never really believed it, nor studied it. But then someday, just 1 or 2 years ago (I've been into archery for appr. 38 years, but in 3D only appr. since 17 years ago - wow really? Anyway, I had to test it and setup a relatively small 3D target at very short distance (so basically shooting down against the ground, at maybe 2 m's distance or so. So I tried to use my 30 m sight pin and it actually worked fairly well. I have 4 pins: 12 m, 18 m, 24 m and 30 m. I allways thought that everything up to 12 m is my 12 m pin. But by the test I learned that maybe up to 5 m or so I should in most cases use my 30 m pin. I have not done much more testing, but probably should - incl. shots up and down. I have a feeling how to aim up and down and it normally works ok. But if I want to do it better, I should probably test it more. And by the way - I tend to forget to use my longer distance sight pins at the distances shorter than for example 8-9 m.

I shoot compound 3D. At a recent comp we had a 2yd shot straight down into a crater. I X'd it with a sight mark of 91.5yds. A real case of Trust Your Marks.

same deal with a compound when you shoot at 2m as a first step in a walk back tune. Yeah walk back tunes are for windage but to hit the spot you are aiming at (vertically), you are on your 30m pin. Might be exacerbated compared to recurve actually because the arrow rest is a fair bit lower than your peep height.

It figures you described it backwards, just like all of Australia, what's in that water, or is it the air?

Im a rifle shooter mainly, so bow site adjustment is backwards as you adjust the rear sight instead of the front. But same thing applies. Uphill /downhill poi is always shorter distance wise than measued distance. How much depends on the angle

Yup, shoot 3d with a compound bow. Sometimes, they set shots at 5 meters .. I set my sight at 35 meters.. you would be amazed at how many bow shooters don't know that. Same thing with angle shots. Good telemeters give you the right distance, compensating for the up or down angle... science... if the shot is not good, you're bad! 🎯🤷‍♂️🤦

I thought this was common knowledge? I’ve been setting my sights to 45 meters at sub 10 meter distance for close to 15 years

easy way to test a 50m shot, use 59m at 3 meters. adjust till it hits center. shot 20m pin at 10 meter, easy way to use a sight tape to guesstimate 60 meter shot. usually its sight tape 1 above or below and never miss the target
