Yup, never knew I was saying Arches wrong, but I LIKE how we say it so it will always be “ plural” to me. I’m an arches girl through and through and will probably always be. I find these tests of products very helpful Kristy, thank you for doing them.

@@KristyRice I just want to tell you one more thing. I am trying a new technique for painting flowers. So I had to draw the flower and I said to myself…” just do it the Kristy Rice way”…so I did! I started with ovals and circles and they are the best I’ve ever done! I’ve learned so much from you. Wonderful! We know watercolorists have used Stonehenge printmaking paper as a hot-pressed alternative for years, and while the performance is different, it's always been a worthy, high-quality choice for many media. This was a terrific comparison that showed so well the strengths of both types of paper. Thanks for posting this!

Some tiny constructive feedback: changing the camera angle so much made the comparison "awkward/confusing" for my visual processing. For me, keeping it consistent would have been better, and my choice would have been from above. The one section where is was kind of diagonal with both sides shown at once was particularly hard to process. IMHO, comparison and review videos really benefit from a lack of artistic filming approaches. Thank you for the comparison and for reading my thoughts.

I pronounced it "Arches" when I was first introduced to it but honestly, I studied French for 7 years and should have realized that it really should be pronounced "Arsch". I now say it correctly but it's been a struggle! 😂 I will say that people in the US rarely say French words correctly so no one can fault those who don't give it a proper French pronunciation.

I've never tried Arches paper because it's sized with gelatine. My absolute favourite watercolour paper is Canson heritage paper - 100% cotton, no animal products, and boy, it's just wonderful. Sometimes I feel like it's doing the work for me, haha. It also takes a battering and stays intact - I like to use scrubbing techniques, and at the early stages of every painting I use a LOT of water, which it copes with no bother. I always use the blocks, as stretching paper is a scunner that I can't be doing with. Nice video, thanks.

I call it Arches, just like you do. I've never tried Stonehenge. I use Arches, Indigo spiral bound books, and Fabriano the most. I think the Fabriano I use is student grade. I used it mostly for color swatching scraps (to see if I've mixed the right shade I want for my painting). The Indigo paper is a whole other animal! I really can't explain how it acts. It's weird and definitely has a learning curve. I only use it so I don't have paintings all over my house. Not everything is a masterpiece and I can turn the page.

@@KristyRice It's called Indigo Artpaper Art Journal. It is handmade paper from India 140 lb. It's thick, but will buckle. If you let it dry a bit, it will calm down. I clip it down with a binder clip. It has deckled edges, which I love the look of. I get mine from Cheap Joes. It's a VERY thirsty paper. I have to wet it a few times before I start painting. This is what I can't explain...it's almost like the paint floats on the paper and then all of a sudden it gets sucks in. You have to do it yourself to see what I'm talking about. With that said, I don't think the paint dries as light as it does on other papers. Again, something you'd probably need to see your yourself. It takes getting used to, but I really do like the paper.

What have you discovered when using Arches vs. Stonehenge? A few more thoughts as I continue to process this experiment: - Recently a few viewers mentioned their struggle with Arches and how it just "sucks up" water. Indeed it does,that for me is the beauty of the paper. But here is the key, I think to enjoying this feature instead of struggling with it: Use a lot of water. As you lay down the first layers have water almost dropping off your brush. Get that paper worked on with water and it will then pay you back for a long while remaining damp and incredible! - Use a palette knife to "cut" paper off the Stonehenge block, anything thicker will tear your paper! And if you're needing to know more about Arches paper watch this video too! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-jUCHIdIV_6o.html

I only have the tiny pads (which I still love) but I've tried all the tricks, all the tape, nothing works. Arches I can slap on some masking tape, leave it for months, and it'll still come off perfectly lol. And yeah, I pronounce arches like the architecture thing as an american lol. That wasn't a word I learned in my public school french classes.

Thanks for the comparison. It looked like the water and pigment maybe sat on top of the page too much on the Stonehenge, leading to the mingling you called muddiness. On the last example, it seemed you had to keep going back and re-applying strokes because earlier ones spread and disappeared. As for Arches, right or wrong, I choose Arch-es. It sounds like it looks in English and doesn't sound pretentious, which "Arsh" does to your common everyday American artist.

As someone who speaks both French and English, I don’t think it matters whether you pronounce Arches as you would in English or as you would in French. For two reasons: one, the word has the same meaning in both languages, and two, when English speakers try to pronounce “Arches” the French way, they neglect the fact that in French, you need to roll the “r” in the back of their throat. So, they are technically still mispronouncing the name.

This was a great review of both papers. Thank you, Kristy. I use Arches (and yep, I knowingly say it the incorrect way). I had been searching for black 100% cotton watercolor paper for some time and discovered Stonehenge has one, so I bought it. I was pretty impressed with it. I did notice the texture was not as rough as Arches, but it performed well, actually, much better than I expected. Because it is black, I ended up pulling out my gouache for more opaqueness, so it was not an apples-to-apples comparison. It will be great to have on hand for when I want a black paper. I was intrigued enough by it that I think I will buy a small block of white. My thought is maybe the Stonehenge would be a good go-between the Arches cold and hot pressed in that it wouldn't be quite as smooth. I know Blick has micro pads, so perhaps I'll just grab one of those to test. I really appreciated this comparison.

Arch-es or Arsh (as in Harsh): It's only very recently that Australia, the US and North America (probably New Zealand, too? Any NZ's here who can put me right?) have begun to realise that it is "Arsh". I'm not sure when the change began, or why, but the mispronunciation may be because until recently, people haven't paid a great deal of attention to where their supplies come from? Maybe the change came from seeing promos for the paper here on ArtTube? I've spoken French since I first lived here in my early 20's, have always been interested in where and how my supplies are made, and yet it took me to come back to France to live, six years ago, for the penny to drop and for me to realise my 'mistake', simply because in the UK, everyone, even professionals doing workshops and demos said Ar-ches!!! 😄 There are many other mispronunciations - Schmincke, Hahnemühle, Sennelier, to mention only three!

Are you saying "Engram" watercolor paint? Also after your recent paint comparison, purchased some lovely Jackson's pan colors. Bought both full and half pans. Now I can't find a decent (and pretty!) full pan tin, or even just full pans that have some kind of magnet system that doesn't permanently adhere the pans to the bottom of the tin. Ideas, other than amazon which I've exhausted, of art supply houses that would have the clutch system your tin has that doesn't require magnets? Amazon doesn't have full pans with magnetized adherants for the bottom of tins in full pan size. Did look at tiny magnets on amazon since I believe you said you put in pans with paint (maybe I'm wrong about that?), but turned off by the reviews of magnets coming apart just in general use. Just ordered another K Rice watercolor paint collection. Starting my watercolor journey and loving your paint!

I googled it thinking it was a different brand ( insert embarrassed emoji here ). These demo/comparison videos are SOOO valuable and helpful. I have Stonehenge but wanted to try Arches. Held off due to the expense and not knowing what the difference would be. So appreciate you taking the time to do that for us. @morgenmachen2400
@morgenmachen2400 Год назад
Hi everyone! Sorry, this is a really long comment. Couple things I wanted to mention. First I'll talk about the differences mentioned between brands. Almost every issue Kristy mentions with Stonehenge- the tearing, the issues with layering and glazing , the soft feel of the surface- all of this is a result of sizing. Primarily being that Stonehenge is not surface as well as internally sized, as Arches is. The surface sizing slows the absorption of pigment and water into the layers of the paper. That surface sizing is what really allows watercolor to look so luminous. Also, it protects the integrity of the cotton fibers. Arches is often described very 'thirsty' meaning it can take a lot of water, because of that sizing. It allows one to scrub and lift easily, because the pigment hasn't settled down inbetween the fibers of the cotton; it sits on top. I mean, if you like masking as a technique, then you wouldn't want to work with any papers that aren't surface sized. You will quickly see how fragile these papers are. It's not just being surface sized that lends Arches the many qualities it's adored for, it's the type of sizing (comes from bovine or sheep intestine I believe). There are vegan externally sized papers - Fabriano, for example, for those of you who are vegan (and if you are, you might want to carefully research the ingredients in your paints as well). Fabriano's vegan sizing renders it still more durable than Stonehenge but it's not the same as animal sizing by a LONG SHOT, not even the newest formula. About the price - I would suggest checking eBay. I find fantastic deals, usually one pad or block at a time, sometimes from sellers who don't paint and don't recognize the demand for the product. Another way to cut costs is to purchase sheets and cut or tear to size, or purchase rolls. If you calculate the cost of a square inch for each option you'll find it worth the extra trouble. I do regularly use paper other than Arches - Saunders Waterford, Bao Hong Masters Choice, Hanhamule and have tried many more .When I say Arches has NEVER failed me I mean it. I've ruined a good number of paintings on my own lol, however it's never been an issue of the paper when it comes to them. For that reason I keep coming back to this paper, particularly for paintings that I know will require a lot of time and effort. Edit: correction in comments, sizing for this paper is made from boiled rabbit bones.
@KristyRice
@KristyRice Год назад
