Everybody needs to block the bad thoughts sometimes! One more reason from this amazing teacher to give yourself permission to make art! This is also a perfect example of why we should never feel guilty about using paper. We derive so much good from the process itself, in a way the finished art is just a bonus!

I first started arting with an art journal and incorporated watercolors. I do more of a therapy/art journal. I have PTSD and painting lets me forget and go to a completely different "place." The first "painting" I did in my journal was of water and a sunset and I wrote on it, "When I paint, I can breathe."

“When I paint, I can breathe”I love that and it’s so true through!! I’ve been a complete mess the past few weeks over some pretty traumatic stuff going on with several things happening, one right after the next. It’s hit me hard and as much as painting has been the only thing that has saved me, it’s only been after I force myself to get out my supplies to use them. Each time, make so many excuses not to set up my stuff even after every time it is the only thing that makes me feel better. Then once I’m in that flow, I don’t want to stop. Before I know it, I’ve been painting for hours and wonder where the time went. When they say “art heals” they’re absolutely right. When I sat down today, I painted for 5 hrs straight!! Looking back, not once did I think of all the crap going on! The longer I sat there the better I felt! After I cleaned up, I felt like I had far more energy and was in a far better mood than I have been in in weeks!! I feel like it’s the only thing saving me now because before, I was in a pretty dark place. I feel like as much as I have to look forward to in life and should feel like I have better things in my life that I have to look forward to, this is the only thing that’s doing it for me right now. And in doing so, it’s making want to get back to myself more and more. I still have my moments, but that’s when I feel like I just have to push myself to just paint more instead of making excuses not to.

👈taper here! I do it because I love the nice clean look it gives! And as weird as it sounds, I see watercolors as a much cleaner kind of paint so for me, they just go together! I’m wondering if WATCHING creative things like this has the same effects as doing them. Every time I watch stuff like this, it takes my mind away from all the everyday crap I worry about just as much as actually painting does. I actually watch watercolor paint making videos while I try to fall asleep at night because it just takes my mind away! After a few batches of grinding and mulling, I’m out cold! 😂

Re: "wasting" good supplies on practice: I would dare, if I could afford. I'm a baby painter, but a rockstar knitter. I learned the wonderful way to always use the best materials you can afford, but ESPECIALLY for practice. It's a fine line, trying to give something a try without breaking the bank on stuff you'll never use, but fighting with crap tools is a FANTASTIC way to guarantee that you don't want to keep going. So yeah, you spent less, and wasted very penny while also robbing yourself of the joy. Plus, until you know your way around the tools - not just the basics, but your own tastes, preferences, and requirements, as well as how to spot quality AND the difference between the quality & the subjective parts, and how the different tools affect different raw materials & basic techniques (of hello, topic!) - price is often the ONLY guidance you have. And yeah, there are people who were just really intuitive artists as kids & now they're fine arts grad students talking about how dollar store supplies are just as good, and just NO. No, they are not, and you aren't just not an artist for that. Sorry, pet beef. My point is,, yeah, that $80 kolinsky brush is excessive for a beginner, and a sweater's worth of hand painted silk yarn should b saved for something special. But within the bounds of reason, get the best you can, and USE it. There will be sticker shock, but odds are that even the cheapest crap that you absolutely DO NOT WANT are going to cost many times what you thought they "should". Real supplies cost real money, but you're gonna get what you pay for (with rare but notable exception, like knitting NEEDLES, somehow??), and they're still not so much that you can't be frugal (and avoid decision paralysis) by limiting yourself to a minimal handful of entry-price basics instead of an overpriced, low quality starter kit you have no idea what to do with. Go to the specialty shop, ask one of the employees (they're always enthusiasts themselves & often pros in a real one), get the good stuff, and use it. Use it.

All of my art is practice and all of my art is on good paper. If I "practice" on good paper I'll know what to do on good paper. Also, my art is for me and enjoying the creative process. The only real expendable is paper. I can paint 100 sheets of paper for what a day at the golf course would cost. Yay!

When Daniel Smith still had his store one could buy parent sheets of all the quality brands. I loved that store in south Seattle. He sold it a few years back. The new owners didn’t seem that different. And then. Dec of 2022 they closed the store. I’d been going there since the 70 ies. I do miss it.

I wrote my Mater's thesis on this topic, healing through art-based practice. Trying to find any information on this was very hard because it was always turning into "art therapy", based on preconceived ideas and final art work, and story agency from the creator/artist.

I’ve only been painting for a few years (one good thing that came out of the pandemic!), and of course started with student, economical supplies. Now, though, since I can see the difference when using good paints, the right paper for the project, I only use my better quality supplies. Even when practicing color blends, strokes, whatever, because I then often turn them into backgrounds for cards, tags, etc. I buy supplies on sale, and carefully choose what to add to my growing collection.

I already watch Tammy! I wondered why painting has been so therapeutic! My dad died almost a year ago. And it has brought up so much trauma from my childhood. Maybe that’s one of the reasons God released the burning desire to paint. To give me reprieve for my mind. 🤔 something to chew on. Since I’ve only been doing this for six months. @@KristyRice Kristy, I just buy 1/2-1 inch blue painter’s tape at the dollar store. Whatever size they have. Then I tape the loose paper down to my board. This way I can use a ton of water and prevent buckling while doing so. When the tape is removed, it looks like a mat border. Then the painting can just be popped into a frame. The narrow tape you have is nice, but it does not give that border effect. I think I would find it stressful trying to place it evenly. Hope that is helpful.

Since watching your videos, I DO use my best paper for practises… the watercolours react differently on cheaper paper so practising on those will not help me to learn what I can do with my colours, especially my super-granulating ones. My cheaper paper isn’t wasted though. I make cards so it’s used for stamping on and heat embossing, then I’m ‘colouring in ‘ with my paints so the quality of paper isn’t so important ❤️ Thank you for another great video… off to have a look at the links …

kristie. So love your videos. Then zen of painting is what has me hooked! As for the taped edge issue, I think its effect is more obvious on a piece that is wholly contained within those borders....like a landscape, or any work where the paint goes right up to that edge. Removing the tape makes an instant mat or frame for the work. I hope others can articulate this better than i just did. Happy Sunday!

Kristy, I have always used good paper. I could never see why I would use a cheap paper for practice and then expect my results to be what I’m looking for. Because I find that I paint very differently on good paper versus cheap paper. Cheap paper is a struggle. Just never made any sense to me. Your tutorial on different papers was very helpful and I was able to find and enjoy a less costly paper that has good properties (Gem Craft), which I do use for practice now. Otherwise, Arches is my preferred paper.
@Lacroix999
@Lacroix999 Год назад
I see what you’re saying, but I honestly prefer cheaper paper. I’m not sure what it is, but the better quality papers just don’t work as well for me. I feel like they take too long to dry and the granulations on the paper don’t quite sit on it and flow the same way as it does on the expensive paper. Maybe that is because I started out on the cheaper stuff and that’s what I’m used to, but that’s actually how I prefer to work. The only time I get annoyed with the cheaper paper is when I’m working on a bigger piece and it dries faster than I’d like and adding too much water to compensate for that just makes it worse. But considering that I work mostly on smaller pieces, it’s not much of an issue for me.

After watching you paint with your palette for so long, I finally took the plunge and I just ordered it! Now I can't wait to get it! 🥳Do you mix the yellow with your red or pink, to make a peach or orange? I'm very intrigued about how using the neon will look with other colors. When you use it with your blue it is stunning! I use my Academy paper for practicing, but I do not use my Arches. I think I've only used my Arches twice since I've been painting. 🤔🤦‍♀️

I like to tape to stabilise the paper and to have a certain about a border. And also to have the possibility of use lots of water eventually. But I also like to use the tape to interact with the painting! You can accomplish some true effects!

I'm pretty much a complete newbie with watercolour painting (and putting art on paper in general), I also live in the more depressing island of New Zealand (and before anyone reminds me that I definitely probably should just bought the supplies from a amazon or a similar store, Buying anything from amazon even if it was just a simple pen would cost me easily $200 for shipping alone. Amazon just doesn't want to offer their products to people like me who live in the countries that I do) So after binge watching artists like yourself for months on end but clearly not paying any attention to all of the videos that so easily lay out all that you need as a beginner. I finally decided F*ck it I'm going to treat myself and go & buy the "basics" of what I thought I needed. So I went to the art store they had exactly zero ready to go pans of colour, heck they didn't even have pans that you could fill yourself; So I did what I do best I got flustered and stupidly bought 7 different brands of tube sets, 2 full sets of brushes, plus an array of different branded (very expensive) single brushes. I then found my way to the paper section they had a whopping variety of only 2 different brands of watercolour paper, so that gave me a choice of either getting the $160 pad of paper or the $300 pad of paper (I bought the cheaper one, which wasn't even cheap) So since all my "projects" are really just the most basic beginners things that you could possibly imagine, I don't really have a choice but to use my really good quality but definitely overpriced paper and paints and brushes. I do get a laugh out of the fact that my paints are currently being held in those plastic 🎨 kids pallets. I am hoping that i can find some pans and a tin that won't cost me an arm a leg, but so far I have not found any in every store that I've looked. So to answer your question yes I do use my fancy paper since that's all I've got to 🙃

And, yes, time passes and I realize I haven't thought of stressors while I've been painting. It must be a thing.

Ok loving the abstract feel of the these pieces. Looks like woven linen. I leave the paper on the pad and use clips. I do have masking fluid haven't tried it yet

You are on point about forgetting everything around you when you're arting! It's my happy place and a great escape for sure. I do use tape on almost everything. Even measure to get the edges the same. 😂 Personal preference on the clean edge it gives after it pulled.

You don't but I've found that daggers make leaves more effortless in less strokes :)

Are you in the US? They are in stock currently but not Prime until all of the restock inventory makes it to enough Amazon warehouses. So you can order now but arrival will take a smidge longer than normal :) Hope that makes sense!

I took a watercolor class many many years ago. She had us prep the paper by spraying it with something ( I can’t remember if it was a sealer or what) and she used rubber cement stuff to keep the paint from bleeding into the areas next to whatever we were painting. Do you do that ever?
@KristyRice
@KristyRice Год назад
Hmm I'm thinking the rubber cement stuff was likely masking fluid but the primer I'm not sure. I don't use either!
