A great QB who played for an awful team in the Saints. Also started the Manning quarterback legacy. Archie was the most talented of the Manning football players; he was mobile and had a great arm (which Eli and Peyton inherited, the running not so much). Archie gets forgotten about, because of subpar stats and a 26% winning percentage.

It must've been a real relief to Archie that his sons were on good teams and able to reach their full potential.

A legend to never go to the playoffs, or a Superbowl. He had some amazing skills for a QB. He was running for his life. His offensive line was so horrible.

Yeah his whole team was terrible around him; definitely had the physical tools that his sons didn't have.

So true. He was one of those unfortunate talented athletes who were kept down by terrible teams. I see athletes like Mike Trout, and can't help but lament all that wasted talent.

Imagine Pat Mahomes with better footwork but similar creativity playing on the worst team in football with no o-line and trash receivers. That's Archie Manning. He was my favorite QB as a boy, I really looked forward to the weeks where the Saints played, even though I wasn't a fan. I was an Archie fan. I'd have rather had him on my dream team of the 70s than Staubach, Griese, Stabler or Bradshaw. The only guy as good was Tarkenton. Some of his greatest plays ever will never make the highlight reels because in a typical game at least once he'd make an unbelievable scramble, break out of three tackles and then throw a 40 yard dime on a dead run...and the no good receiver would drop the ball.

Ike Harris used to drive Saints fans crazy. Good catches but would drop the ball on the most critical play of the game.

The owner of the Saints was asked why he wouldn't hire Archie an offensive line to protect him and some receivers who could get open and catch a football. He replied, "Why spend all that money? Archie will fill the stadium every home game." I grew up 20 miles from Ole Miss and watched him play college ball 4 years. He was amazing!!

If there had been unrestricted free agency and salary cap in his day he'd have moved on to a good team and won championships before his rookie contract was up. He was a thrill to watch, and as a Rams fan back then I used to hate him because somehow he'd always find a way to beat us when the Rams' win % was in the 70s and the Saints' was in the 20s. The teams he was on were so terrible I felt sorry for the guy even though at the time the Saints were in our division. Just his poor luck that that talent was wasted by the Saints' owner, whose only concern was butts in seats. I know he's proud of his sons but it's gotta kill him that he was never on a championship team in his career and isn't in the HOF with Peyton as a result.

Jim Plunkett, the only player to be drafted ahead of Archie Manning in 1971, had the good fortunate of being traded to San Francisco, and then to Oakland (where he blossomed). If only Archie had been traded to either the L.A. Rams or Chicago Bears in 1976 -- both of whom were clearly hurting at the QB position at the time. He'd probably be in the Hall of Fame.

Ive been a die hard Saints fan since even before Archie - but I loved #8 - he had some damn good numbers considering he NEVER had a decent O-Line blocking for him

Should have hired Eddie Robinson. If race wasn't such an issue back then Coach Robinson would have made the Saints a winner.

Lowest lifetime winning percentage among NFL QBs with 100 or more games played. Most times sacked. An entire career with minimal or no supporting cast, it's a miracle that Archie wasn't left mentally broken.

Makes me sad. My late father used to cut Archie's hair at his dad's shop in Eastgate shopping center in Oxford. At Ole Miss Archie was almost like a God. Tiny little Oxford, Ms, had a claim to fame.

Crazy play starting at 2:39 where Archie (8) throws an underhand pass to Mike Renfro (82) on a broken play. That game was in ‘82, the strike shortened year and Archie was playing for Houston.

The name "Ed Biles" will never be remembered in lists including Belichik, Ewbank, Shula, Noll, Walsh, etc. He supposedly played a part in Bum Phillips' controversial firing. That and the Oilers becoming a doormat under Biles didn't quite endear Biles to "Luv Ya Blue" fans.

I remember that play very vividly. Also, as an Oiler where he was sacked 4 straight times for about a total of 30 yards lost resulting in a safety against the NY Giants. I think that was '82 as well. Oilers couldn't win more than 2 or 3 games in a season that era. Archie was right. The Oilers were even worse than the Saints during that post- Luv Ya Blue era.

The one other thing about Archie; he is also a good man. He started the Ronald McDonald house in New Orleans, given of his time to charities, and infused that into his sons who have carried on good works.

Terry Bradshaw and The Steelers started out from the same exact place as Archie Manning and The Saints: In Bradshaw’s rookie year, the Steelers were 5-9, then they were 6-8. That was 1970 and 1971. In 1969, the season before Bradshaw joined The Steelers, Chuck Noll and Company was 1-13. Yet The Steelers GOT THE PLAYERS, and BUILT A DYNASTY. The Saints could have done the same thing, but didn’t. Bad Decision-Making. Bad Management. Losing Team, Losing Philosophy.

Archie Manning had a powerful arm, but he should have been a Hall of Fame, if he won a Super Bowl or played with excellent offensive line. The Saints back then when he played was very terrible and couldn’t get his team to win games.

Archie took a beating for the majority of his career. He probably has a much greater career if he had a few more helpers around him to win games.

Archie Manning was similar to Fran Tarkenton on a lousy team. You never really knew if it was athleticism or sheer survival.

I've seen people call him overrated, but that doesn't make sense because he's only though of highly by Saints fans. Everyone else knows him as Peyton and Eli Manning's dad

Archie wasn't peyton, or even eli, but he was much tougher. He got his ass kicked regularly and still played a long career in the nfl

Thats time period of The BROWN PAPER BAGS with letters AINTS.. ARCHIE was a great QB with misfortune of BAD TEAMS.. OILERS & SAINTS. Bur his two sons Eli & Peyton M. Brought home 4 SBOWL titles home to DAD..😅😅😅😅
